My Husband Hit His Head on a Concrete Floor and Now Has a Bald Spot – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

In mid-feb, my husband was wrestling with a friend in our living room. His friend picked him up and accidently slammed him on the concete floor. My husband’s head hit the floor and he had a huge bump on his head. The swealling went down but he still has a bald spot there. Will his hair ever grow back?

I would expect that the hair will grow back within 6 months (or less) from time of the injury.

People Who Start Balding Will Go Bald Within 7-10 Years? – Balding Blog

I am currently in St.Kitts (caribbean) and I take proscar for my hair loss problem. Because it is hot here, I don’t want to leave the tablets in my room because I fear that they will get too hot and possibly go bad. Is it ok to put the pills in the fridge and keep them cool or will they also go bad?

Another thing, I have been losing hair since I was 18/19 and I am 25 now and I have relatively thick hair still. I am of East Indian decent but have lived my whole life in the USA, My temples have receded, but in pictures they still look good and it looks as if I still have a straight hairline. The crown is thikcker than the front but a little bit of thinning. My question is, I usually notice that people who have started balding, on average, if they are not taking any medication or doing anything about their baldness they tend to go bald within 7-10 yrs. So, around the 6 yr mark (which I am at) a person who is balding and not taking any propecia/rogain they should be noticeable bald and have a distinct balding pattern. As for me I am not at that stage yet so does that mean that I will not get completely bald and that propecia will let me keep my hair for a longer period?

Thank-you for your time and keep up the good work. Take Care Dr.

The official FDA recommendation is that finasteride (Propecia or Proscar) be stored at room temperature, between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C). Be sure that they are kept in a sealed, airtight container as the humidity where you live can get into the bottle. If you are cutting up the Proscar, do not cut more than one pill at a time or the humidity will damage the cut pills if they sit out too long without the protective coating.

As for your other question, the 7-10 years that you see is just a coincidence, as everyone balds at a different rate according to their genetic code (which can not be read). I can’t tell you what your future will be with regard to balding.

Reader Wants Everyone to Know That People Do Lie! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am a firm believer that Finasteride works, and works well! I always question people on these forums who say otherwise. An analogous case in point. I was looking at this bodybuilding forum recently talking about this Arnold Schwarzenegger Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, and people were saying some negative things about it. I use it as my bible so to speak, and I can promise it works, regardless of people who says it didn’t help them gain any muscle — they didn’t try hard enough. That said, people reading this should know that other people say all sorts of crazy stuff and lie, so take everything with a grain of salt.

Sorting through all of the BS on the Internet can be a difficult task. Sometimes it just comes down to plain old common sense. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you think a secret “miracle hair cure” is going to be available off the Internet for the low, low price of $100, you’ve most likely just flushed that $100 down the toilet. Look for proof, not for fantasy.

And to add to the point you were making, people need to also remember that many claims found on the Internet are unsubstantiated. For example, just because Joe Schmo says that a medication made his hair fall out and his fingertips turn black doesn’t mean it really even happened!

Minoxidil is Toxic to Cats – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m been prescribed Rogaine foam by a hair loss expert, however I’ve read that it is highly toxic to cats, and as a cat owner this troubles me somewhat. Obviously I won’t be deliberately applying it to her and I’ll be keeping it in the bathroom, however as she is fond of rubbing her head against mine I worry this may cause some of the Minoxidil to transfer over to her.

Naturally I dont want her to be ‘off limits’ for the entire time I use the substance, so what are the best practices and habits I should develop to ensure that she is never exposed to the toxin? How long after applying is it safe to go near her? How cautious should I be?

Your advice is appreciated.

Block Quote

CatIf you wash your hair about 1 hour after applying the Rogaine, I would expect that all of the medication will be washed off (it’ll be absorbed within that first hour), making it safe to be near your cats. Also, Rogaine is not a prescription item and is available over the counter.

Yes, the Animal Poison Control Center has stated that exposing a cat to minoxidil can cause death. It seems quite rare, however, as only 6 cases were reported over 4 years, with those cases involving the owner actually applying the medication to the cat’s fur, the cat stepping in the medication, or the cat licking the medication (source: NBC).

An abstract of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s article can be found here — Suspected toxicosis after topical administration of minoxidil in 2 cats.

18 Year Old Man Wants Options for a Lower Hairline – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hey doc, I’m an 18 year old male with a big forehead for someone my size, and it’s really bugging me. What option would be the best to remedy this for a guy who is my age, who is not balding or has ever had any form of hair loss, whose father did not start balding until his 50s, and who only needs to lower his hairline by 1-2cm?

I know that my two choices are forehead reduction surgery (but I’m kinda wary about the possible visible scar if I start balding), and hair transplantation. Which would the costs generally be for each option for a hairline 1-2cm lower?

At 18 years old, you really won’t know if you will bald, so if you move your hairline down with transplant and should start to recede in the future, you will have a vacant space behind the newly lowered hairline. If you move down your hairline with a hairline lowering procedure and should bald, then the scar from the procedure may show as you continue to recede. Many surgeons will not tackle lowering the hairline on an 18 year old male. For women though, it is generally no problem!

The cost of either procedure (hairline lowering or hair transplants to the hairline) may run about the same.

A Few Years Ago a Bald Spot Appeared at My Hairline… – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

A few years back I lost hair in a small area on the front of my scalp. My hair has not thinned anymore or anywhere else. Just this one spot on the front on my scalp, almost like a receding hairline but only one one side? What could it be?

You need to get a good doctor to look at it. There are many things that can cause a single spot of hair loss and a good dermatologist should be able to make that diagnosis for you.

I’m Happy with Propecia Results, But I Want to Add Scalp Med – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m 25, and have been experiencing mpb for about 3 years. I have been taking Propecia for the last 18 months, and am moderately happy with the results, as I believe it has moderated my hair loss, although no new growth has occured. I am considering trying Scalp Med, regardless of the legitimacy of its claims.

I have no allergies or previous medical issues, and my only question is whether I have to be concerned that using Scalp Med while taking Propecia may be dangerous to my hair, or even my health?

Scalp MedScalp Med’s active hair loss treatment ingredient is minoxidil, along with added ingredients that aren’t going to regrow hair and a much higher price tag than generic minoxidil. You can build dependence on minoxidil just as you can on Propecia, meaning if you stop either medication, all benefits are gone and any hair retained will be gone. Potential side effects for minoxidil can be found at Wikipedia and Drugs.com.

I can see no harm in using both Propecia and Scalp Med at the same time. Many men take Propecia and use Rogaine (minoxidil) concurrently, and so using Scalp Med (being a “boutique” minoxidil) with Propecia would be fine.

Propecia and Anabolic Steroids Both Increase Testosterone Levels – Balding Blog

Couple questions:

  1. I read in one of the questions/answers here that DHT is not as strong as testosterone, but the first paragraph for DHT Wikipedia (take it with a grain of salt) says that DHT is 3x more powerful than testosterone. How is this contradiction explained?
  2. I’m having a hard time distinguishing between propecia and anabolic steroids. Both increase testosterone levels in men. Propedia does this by inhibiting DHT while anabolic steroids do this simply by adding more testosterone. Also for both, this increase in testosterone might mean an increase in estrogen levels/aromatizing and everything that comes with that i.e. fat in a female pattern, breasts, stunted growth, etc. With professional sporting organizations banning finasteride b/c it masks steroids, this further confuses the issue. I even saw propecia being touted on a bodybuilding website as something that seemed to mimic using an anabolic steroid. Is taking Propecia basically the same as taking an anabolic steroid?

I am not a pharmacologist and what I know about these drugs are practical things that I read about. DHT is more powerful that testosterone at some things like the development of male sex characteristics at puberty and the development of other male sex characteristics as boys grow into men. From a sex drive point of view, I do not believe it is as powerful as testosterone. The fundamental building blocks of the various adrenal and sex hormones have great chemical similarity, but small changes in the molecules make very different responses in the various organ systems of the body.

Taking Propecia is very different than taking anabolic steroids… like night and day. The observation that testosterone levels go up with Propecia is not to suggest that if you take it you will be having the same impact as taking anabolic steroids. If this answer is too cursory, then take the initiative and read about it, looking at the things that seem to interest you. I’d guess that these things are covered in extensive writings in text books and research papers. Unfortunately, I don’t have all the answers (though I wish I did sometimes), and I am not the source for this type of detailed information.

Using Hair Spray After a Hair Transplant – Balding Blog

Hello Doctor

How long after a HT procedure is it safe to use hairspray? Does an alcohol free hairspray make a difference ?

Thank you for your time

The grafts are well sealed after a couple of days. You can then blow dry your hair with gentle heat and use a hair spray as well.

Hair Loss InformationShould I Start Treatment Now or Wait for Follica? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr Rassman

I feel I might be facing a dilemma with regards to my slightly receded hairline. I’ve seen my GP and he said it seems to be in the early stages or recession and to start using rogaine (I suppose i’m not yet a norwood 2). However, I’ve read that such things as HM or the acell/follica treatments may be available before I’m middle aged (i’m 25 now).

Would you consider it a good idea to use rogaine or wait and see the test photos from Follica which I understand might be released in September. It seems to me that if the newer “one shot” treatments work out then I’ll have wasted time/money and exposed my body to hormone affecting drugs (something I’m not keen on doing)

Thank you for your time.

FollicaThe longer you wait to do something about your hair loss, the more hair that is going to be lost. I would highly doubt that Follica will have something available to you this year or any time soon. You should realize that you are playing a game of Russian roulette with each hair follicle. If you’ve already started to recede, then what are you going to wait for? Follica has much promise, but your hair will not wait on the promises.

You can learn more about Follica from an article published in Scientific American over a year ago, Bye-Bye Comb-Overs? Hair Follicles Found Able to Regenerate, or at their simple site, FollicaBio.com.
