I’ve Been Using the Hairmax Lasercomb for 5 Months… – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have been using the Hairmax Lasercomb now for about 5 months and have noticed that my hair is thicker BUT not necessarily thicker from the root or epidermis.. It seems like it makes thin hair look thick but it still falls out at an alarming rate and still ACTS like thin hair. On some of the hair that falls out, you can tell that around the bulb area the hair is still thin-and then on other hairs, it looks thick all the way through which is encouraging. What is your reaction to this?

I am not sure if you are stating that you are seeing a benefit, even though your hair is falling out. If it is working for you, I am happy for you. If you can achieve the same (or better) thickening result from a product like Toppik, wouldn’t that be a cheaper solution?

I know that I tell everyone that they should get their hair mapped out for miniaturization to obtain a metric for change, and I’ll recommend doing so again — then you could put numbers to what you are telling me about.

Scalp Picking Has Created Hair Loss — I Do Not Believe My Dermatologist That It Will Regrow – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

doctor, I have persistantly been picking at my scalp for a year due to stress. My picking has left a red round scar on my scalp that is very noticiable. My dermatologist said that the hair would grow back, if I did not continue to pick at it. He said it would take about a year. I don’t believe him. The scar is very noticeable and very embarrassing….Can you help. I can send you a picture if needed.

thanks in advance.

I tell hair pickers that they must wait for up to one complete telogen cycle to find out if the hair comes back. A telogen cycle may last 3-6 months. Usually, if the hair is not growing in a month, the suggestion is that the damage done may be permanent, but prior to more radical treatment such as hair transplants, this conclusion is not 100%. Also, it is important that you know for sure that the picking has been stopped.

When I Take Creatine, Hair Grows Thicker and Longer – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello. I’ve been taking creatine on and off about 2 years now and I’ve noticed a strange pattern. Everytime I get off creatine, the hairs on my body(including scalp) grows thiner all over and some falls out. When I go back on creatine, new hair grows back much thicker and longer than it naturally would be. Most people seem to think there’s a connection between creatine and hair loss but for me it’s hair growth. Am I some sort of a freakish exception or do other people experience this?

I do not know you well enough to confirm that you are “freakish”. Kidding aside, I do not know of any good research that correlates hair growth with creatine. Most are all anecdotal evidence like your story. In other words, I unfortunately do not have an answer to your question.

Yunsey Hair Loss Shock Treatment – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

have you heard of Yunsey hair loss shock treatment product? If so, do you know how effective it is in preventing hair loss?

I have not heard of this Yunsey hair loss shock treatment. From my brief search on the internet it seems to contain “Hydrolyzed Soya Protein” and “Herbs Extract”, which I doubt to be effective in preventing hair loss.

Hair Loss InformationHair Transplant Repair Candidate (Video) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

This man had the ugly, pluggy hair transplant procedure that was common in the mid 80s. Unfortunately, many, many people think that this is the standard and that if they have a hair transplant, this is what they are going to look like. I spend a great deal of time trying to explain away these types of results, telling prospective patients that today’s standards are so natural that you can not tell them from a person who did not lose their hair. Now with that said, here is a patient that has had some repair work for his old-style hair transplants. Unfortunately, he did not have enough donor hair to fix it the way I would have liked to do it, but what he shows here is much better than what he had when he first came to see me. I asked him if he would talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly and he sat down with me to talk about what it’s like for someone who has this kind of ‘old’ hair transplant work, how difficult it is to fix, and what the limitations are for someone looking to fix a bad job.

When Are My New Grafts Secure? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

How long until the new grafts are secure and safe from loss?

For example, If I take a week off from work and return to work on day 7 post-op, are the new grafts secure?

Beyond day 7 post-op, is there anything in normal day to day activities that can damage the new grafts (excluding any type of catastrophic accident)?

Block Quote

Unless you actively pick at the grafts, the newly transplanted grafts are generally secure after the first 24-48 hours. If there are scabs on them, they can be pulled out by pulling on the scabs, so we always wash any scabbing away so that there is no graft anchoring to the scabs. Normal day to day activity should not affect the grafts, unless your normal day to day activity requires you to wear abrasive helmets or bounce soccer balls on your head… you get the idea.

Do DHT Blockers Reduce DHT Only in the Scalp? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Do DHT Blockers, in general, reduce the level of DHT in the body as measured by a blood test, or is the intent to reduce/block DHT in the scalp? Could you have high levels in blood test results and still benefit by Avodart/Finasteride?

DHT blockers reduce the level of DHT in the blood stream/body and anywhere it has appropriate receptors. The prostate is a good example and sometimes people who are having a hard time urinating (usually over 50 years old) will find that Propecia makes the urinary symptoms better.

Hairs that are sensitive to DHT will fall out according to their genetic fate. You can have very high levels of DHT, but as long as your hair is not sensitive to DHT, Propecia will have little effect on the normal hairs.

Hair Loss Over and Over Again in Cycles – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

dear doctor,
i am 22 years old. for these 4 years, my hair has lost several times. in fact the first time happened when i was 9. i got some treatment and it grew back. when i was 19, i noticed that my hair fell out some parts. there were just small parts, round size. then i went to the west china hospital which is the best one in the west of china.the treatment went though half a year and i went to see the doctor once a month.they gave me some chinese medicine and something that i can wipe on the non-hair parts. besides that, every month i was taken an injection on non-hair parts. the name of the medicine for the injection is Diprospan Compound Betamethasone Injection after several months, i was recovered.

but, just after half a year. the problem happened again. and i got the same treatment. then after several months it happened again. so, june, 2006 i went back to hospital again. this time, i didnt take those chinese medicines but only got the injection (i made this decision), but the difference is that the doctor didnt inject on my head but my muscle. then after two injections my hair grew back. but i still got injection once a month and it lasted 3 more month. but last month the trouble came back again.that means i only had half a year happy time. this month i got one injection. i wonder what kind of problem it is? why it happens again and again?

thank you very much, sir!

From your description, it sounds like you have a condition called alopecia areata. Your doctors seem to put it into remission with steroid use. Of course, this is only a guess. For more information on alopecia area, please see the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.

Long Hair Equals Weaker Roots? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi, I currently have long hair and have noticed quite a bit of thinning in the front and on the crown. I heard that you can lose more hair if it’s long because the roots are weaker. I don’t want to cut my hair because it hides my balding look better. If I keep my hair long will the rate of baldness increase? Thank you very much!

Long hair does not increase the risk of balding. People can get better coverage with long hair rather than short hair, but long hair in the face of genetic thinning, can be easily damaged with rough brushing, more so than short hair so the techniques and the brushes used are important for those who have thinning hair.

Propecia vs Generic Finasteride? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is there any reason to take Propecia versus the generic version. I have been on the generic for a 7 months and the balding has gotten worse (I am 23). Also, do you have recommendations for where to get generic Propecia?

There is no generic Propecia available legally in the US. I realize other countries may manufacture finasteride in 1mg strength, but Propecia is still under patent protection in much of the western world.

There is a generic finasteride available in 5mg strength — any pharmacy should have it, provided that your doctor prescribes you 5mg finasteride. Some patients cut the 5mg tablet into 1/4ths to save money. There may be problems in cutting down the pill into smaller pieces and the partial tablets will have the problem of hydrating with humidity so do not cut more than one at a time (every 4 days) and keep it in a sealed container. Be sure that the company that makes it is legit and you are getting what you are buying!
