I Think 2-Hair Grafts Look Too Thick in the Frontal Hairline – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr Rassman! If I pay for lets say 1000 grafts, do I have the right to achieve 2000 hairs (placed in the front) if I only want 1-hair graft in the front? 2-hair grafts don’t look good in the front (by front i mean about 1 inch), it looks too thick. My hairdoctor and I have different thoughts about this! Your opinion?

I generally put a wide transition zone of single hairs in the frontal line. I believe that the ‘line’ is not actually a line, but a zone where there is a transition from the bald forehead to the thicker hair about 1/2 to 1 inch behind. The thicker area should have two hairs each, but that is a negotiation between doctor and patient. Generally, if you make single hairs from two and three hair grafts, there is a hair death rate, as not all of the hair will survive the break-up of the follicular unit. Great skills are necessary to accomplish this with the greatest success rate possible. I realize you are not in the US, but if you do make it out to California or if any other readers come to one of our open house events, you can look closely at the hairlines we have created and I think you will see what I am talking about in person. So If I Get Shedding from Propecia, Does That Mean It Is Working? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Doc,

I have been on propecia for three months. After my pills ran out I got a little lazy and didnt renew my perscription. In fact I havent been on the drug for almost four months. During this time I noticed considerable shedding, which I guess, reading from your blog, is to be expected. My question is though, does the shedding mean that the drug was actually working? Or is it some abnormal side-effect?

FYI I am 22 and baldness runs in my family.

Sounds like you figured it out. Please be smart and go back and stay on the drug. Discuss this with your prescribing physician.

Treatment for Dermatitis in Eyebrows? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi,
Not only I have dermatitis on my eyebrows but my eyebrows are getting thinner. A dermatologist gave me a treatment for my dermatitis (carefully rubbing the treatment on my eyebrows) but I am too afraid to touch my eyebrows now. I rather to have an oral treatment for my dermatitis, and an oral treatment to regrow my eyebrow hairs (if there is any). Also I am planning on getting my eyebrows transplanted, though would that help against my dermatitis, and a hair transplant cost A LOT OF MONEY!!!

Topical medications work best for dermatitis. Regrowing eyebrows that are lost from manipulation can be difficult or impossible (if the hair has been lost from traction). Transplants will be exposed to the same dermatitis condition as the original eyebrow. Sounds like you need to get the primary problem under control first. Transplant only after the dermatitis is controlled.

will FUE transplanted grafts grow in donor strip scar tissue?

Do you recommend GraftCyte for healing of graft recipient sites?

If a person wanted to have as much hair as possible and not care about having any hair at all on the back and sides of thier head, simulating a rock musician look or marine type cut. Can one successfully FUE that entire area artistically and move it all to the top?

would the tiny dot scars left by the FUE punch eventually be able to tan or blend as not to be too noticeable in person?

And finally if one is nearly totally bald on top – say a 5 vertex – how many grafts will give a thick head of hair on top, not the 50% theory but rather full density, 8000 10,000 or more?

I will answer your diverse questions in the order you wrote them:

Yes, and it is a good method of revising scars of the scalp and can also be used for bad scars in donor area.
Yes, GraftCyte contains copper peptide with a mild cleansing effect and we recommend using it for post operative patients who have a tendency to hold on to the red color after the surgery. It may enhance the healing of the recipient and donor area (claimed by the manufacturer) and it may be helpful to control scabbing and crusting of incisions.
This is not practical and I doubt that any doctor would do this. We generally FOX-test most of our patients and the result dictates whether the patient would be a good candidate for FUE procedure or not. We do not recommend FUE for the patients with negative FOX (having high transaction rate).
The scar of FUE is usually not noticeable, but it is there and does not contain pigment cells (as a rule) so the hairless spot will be noticed by discriminating eyes if the scalp is shaved.
As a general rule, you need 3000+ grafts (about 6000 hairs if you are Caucasian with average density), to cover an area of the size of an adult hand with a reasonable density. For more density, for those with dark hair and light skin, or very fine straight hair, a redo procedure may become necessary.

Hair Stopped Growing But Has Not Fallen Out – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i have a friend thats hair has stopped growing all together on one side. it hasnt fallen out an the scalp. it isnt red, sore, or look infected. i was wondering what could cause this?

It is not easy to make a diagnosis without the right information. I will assume that your friend is a young man and that he may be undergoing early male patterned genetic balding. Some men who are losing their hair from genetic causes will just stop growing their hair in the impacted area. Although this is not the common presentation, it does occur and it may last for months, even years before it falls out. The hair is often miniaturized (small, thinner hair shafts) and eventually a bald area will appear. Live hair follicles never stop growing and going in and out of their growth cycle.

Kevis – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I can find NO information/reviews of KEVIS on your website. Would you please research it and provide your opinion?

Kevis is a topical formulation comprised of non-drug, natural ingredients claimed to stop DHT from destroying hair follicles. Although, it has been commercially available in Europe for a while, no FDA-regulated studies have been conducted in United States that I know of, as the product does not need FDA clearance provided that claims for direct benefit is not made. Searching for available literature on this product, I could not find many convincing ‘objective’ evidence from any source which shows the effectiveness and safety of the product. They have had a strong marketing presence in the United States some years ago but like many similar products, there are too many promises of great hair loss remidies with too little to show. I guess we should wait for more credible research on this product, before making any further recommendations.

Are other medical causes that would contribute to hair miniaturization other than DHT/aga?

Male pattern baldness is not the only cause of miniaturization, which could be seen in many other conditions, such as Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA). Most of the cases of miniaturization are chronic conditions with gradual thinning of the hair. In more acute balding conditions, such as stress related hair loss, fungal infections, or alopecia areata, you may not see any miniaturization.

Melanotan Product and Hair Color – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’ve read about this new peptide called Melanotan. I don’t think it has yet gained FDA approval, but it’s supposed to change your skin pigment, enabling light skinned people to tan and decrease their chances of skin cancer.

If this drug works the way it claims to, would it also change the patient’s hair color?

I don’t know anything about Melanotan. Sorry! Drugs with claims of specific benefits are controlled by the FDA. The manufacturers could have a problem making any drug claims without FDA approval.

Propecia and an Infected Prostate – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 23 years old and have been losing my hair for nearly two years now. I am very interested in starting on propecia, but I had an infected prostate a few months ago. With anti-biotics it went away after a month. What should I do?

I would think that taking Propecia (finasteride 1mg) after a prostate infection is cured should not be a problem. Please though, check with your doctor.

Stopping Minoxidil and Sexual Side Effects of Propecia – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Doctor,

I have two questions to ask,

My hair is good so far and safe but from three months ago I started to lose hair and I think this is due to hereditary hair loss, I think of using Minoxidil hopefully to stop the hair fall but i have two questions regarding that,

My first question:
1- is it true that if i use minoxidil for a while and then decide to stop it one day, it would cause my hair to fall out in three months, I mean is it true that it might make the way it loses faster than the normal process of hair loss or do you think that if i stop using it while my hair was good in the first place it would just start to lose as usual (the normal hair loss process)?

my second question is
Do you think Minoxidil is the best choice so far as in Propecia many people suffer from side effects?

Withdrawal from long term use of minoxidil only causes you to lose what you gained from the drug, nothing more. Propecia (finasteride) goes after the actual cause of the hair loss, the DHT receptor that kicks the hair out while minoxidil does not. Propecia is better for men and is only approved for use in men. Only about 1% of men suffer from libido effects with Propecia and if you are in the 1%, just stop the drug and the effect goes away in a few days.
