Hair Loss Information » Onion Formula – Balding Blog

Doc,

Is there anything to this Onion Formula phenomenon? Thanks!!

I found some herbal info at MyHairLossAdvisor.com. Creative ideas never cease to end and here is another one. Apparently, you rub your hair with an onion before washing. I have also heard of hanging from your feet for 20 minutes three times a day to get more blood flow to your head. I would suspect that putting the onion to it prior to hanging upside down may be one step closer to the solution, from the ground up, that is. Or maybe if you just love the strong odors, you should add some garlic and hot sauce to it. Oh boy.

So is there anything to this onion stuff? No.

Hair Loss InformationWhy Not Transplant Hair From the Arm to the Eyebrow? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello
I had a question about hair transplantation for eyebrows. Ive read through the blog and many articles about this kind of procedure. What am wondering about is, why take hair from the scalp when we know it will act like the hair from the scalp, growing 3 feet or so when using hair from the arm won`t grow any longer than an avergae eyebrow hair.

Would that be a possibility, to actally take hair from the arm insead of the scalp, and not needing to trim the eyebrows after the procedure?

Arm hair will grow like arm hair so you are correct that for delicate eyebrows in a coarse haired person, head hair may be too thick and arm hair in theory might be better. Now with that said, the problem with arm hair is that the telogen (sleep) cycle for the hair is longer than the growth cycle. If you place 10 arm hairs in the eyebrow, only 2-4 of them will be growing at any one time while the rest is in telogen. To address this problem, you would have to transplant at least twice the number of hairs to achieve the targeted densities. Great idea, just not the right hair sleep cycle.

Best Hair Color For Thinning Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

what is the best hair color to camflouge thinning hair?

Block Quote

The best hair color is your skin color. For white people, white hair, for blonde skin, blonde hair, for dark skin, matching dark hair. Make sense?

Now that you are an expert, let me say that light hair always looks better than dark hair and the lighter the hair the better. Black men with white hair look fuller with the same amount of hair that might look thin when naturally darker. If this sounds confusing, think of a newspaper print and how it might look if the paper was dark and the print was white,

Any Psoriasis Precaution Advice for a Hair Stylist? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have a client who really needs a soft perm for the summer and has “bouts” of scalp psoriasis. I want to provide her the best information possible before creating this new style for her and we are currently in the midst of a remission so I need to act fast. I know a patch test and a test curl would be helpful but I was wondering if you could give me any overview advice on what her needs are in this situation and what precautions I could take to make her feel and look her best. I was thinking of using ISO or Aveda perms and clarifying her hair shaft with Redken PreArt and Hair Cleansing Cream prior to the service. What are the PH issues I am faced with and how can I position myself accordingly for the best result possible? Your advice would be most appreciated as this is a tough subject to find good information on. Thank you

Psoriasis is best treated by a dermatologist. There are many degrees to Psoriasis. I have this disease and I can tell you that there are few things that work well when the disease gets in its more advanced phases. I do not believe that there are any non-prescription items that really work for treating this problem. I often advise patients to keep the scalp skin soft and if the inflamation gets very active, try some topical steroids (hydrocortisone cream) no more than three applications 12 hours apart each week that the problem persists. Continuous use of steroids can be absorbed through the skin and into the body.

Hairline Lowering Procedure for Men? – Balding Blog

I have always had a high forehead which combined witha ralativly narrow face spoils an otherwise very attractive face. wearing a fringe or hat – simulating a lower hairline dramatically increases the balance in my face and makes my face look much more attractive. I have other striking features and work hard on my phsyique, being attractive is important to me and I would like to model in the future. I have been told with a few slight alterations this ambition could be a success!

My hairline starts above the point where my forehead begins to curve back to join my scalp and recedes a lot above my temples.

I am relativly young, 23 and male – with no history of balding anywhere within my family, and feel that even if I were older hair transplants would be unsuitable as I wish to wear my hair short and the thin/unpredictable growth patterns I have seen from transplants is not the look I am looking for.. I am wishing to improve my asthetic not correct a baldness problem, thus the overall result would have to look good and be virtually undetectable.

My question is, have hair line lowering operations (forehead reduction?) being carried out on men, and with what degree of success? How dramatic is the scarring – can it be made undetectable even with short spikey hair? Does this kind of procedure alter the direction of growth of the individual folicles – causing a somewhat ‘wild’ appearence of the hairline?

Most of the information I have been able to gather reagarding this surgery has related to older females, although I have seen that such surgery has been popular with transexuals, and the results here – in younger people – seem to be very positive.

Id appreciate if you could email me any help you can give me!

Thanks

Hairline lowering procedures work as well for men as they do for women. The problem is that 50% of men will experience some form of balding, most in the front of their heads. With a successful hairline lowering procedure, what do you think will happen when the hairline recedes from male patterned genetic hair loss? The answer to this question is that you would bald from the incision (scar is minimal usually) backwards, losing all of the benefits of the hairline lowering procedure. This is especially worrisome for the young man, because the ability to predict hair loss in a 23 year old is difficult, near impossible. You would be taking a risk if you have your hairline lowered now. If, however, you go the transplant route, the look is impressive and totally normal and can be followed with more transplants if balding should occur. One of the reasons that hairline lowering procedures works well in gender changing situations is that the testicles are taken off, so the risks of male genetic hair loss is obviated.

See this previous blog entry for photos of a hairline lowering procedure with transplants in a woman with coarse hair.

I Want To Reduce Sebum Production – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr. Rassman,
I have a increased sebum production in the scalp ( the vertex )The sides and back are normal with no hair loss. I have tried several madicines (topically)to reduce the sebum production in scalp and nothing has worked. Is there a oral medicine that can reduce the sebum production by reducing the size if the oil glands? Will lowering DHT ( by taking DHT inhibitors like Dutasteride ) reduce the sebum production?.I am writing with a lot of hope because no one in India seems to have an answer to this problem.I am sure that there will be some medicine that can reduce the size of the oil glands and reduce sebum.I have heard about Isotretinoin and zileuton, will they work in reducing sebum?
Kindly adivice, I will be extremely greatfull to you.

Good shampoos for oily hair are the best way to manage oily scalp. I am sure that various hormones will reduce sebum, but at what real cost to your health? Do not poison your system with drugs to solve this problem.

Should I Try Medications Before Considering a Transplant? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Just turned 40 and starting to bald on top back “crown” of head, was using minoxidil 5% (~1yr), just started on Propecia (day 2) (from what I read here, I guess OK to use both). Should I try all these remedies first before considering a Hair Transplant, do hair transplant results look more natural and successful if started early? Where are you located (offices), would I have to travel from Houston to there for a consultation?

If you just starting to lose the hair in the crown (meaning that it is now noticeable), there is a good chance that Propecia will reverse some or all of it. Recent hair loss (2 years or less) is most susceptible to reversal. I would suggest not stopping the Minoxidil, as your hair is almost certainly dependent upon it. Wait 8 months and if there is not enough reversal, then a hair transplant may have great value.

Our offices are both in San Jose and Los Angeles, California. If you come from out of town and have a procedure, we will subsidize your costs of travel and put you up in a hotel for the night of surgery.

Sun Burn 10 Days After Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I had sun burn for one day about 10 days post op. I am currently 5.5 months and have weak growth. Could I have damaged the grafts. Don’t think I dislodged them.

Do you think I damaged the collegen? would this cause them grafts not to grow, grow slow, grow thin or what? thanks

At 5 months, do not panic and wait out the full 8 months. The sunburn should not have impacted your grafts or significantly damaged your collagen.

Taking Rogaine for 9 Years and Want to Switch to Propecia Now – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m 30 and have been taking rogaine for the past 8 or 9 years. I recently got a prescription for propecia. Should I gradually get off of the rogaine?

Assuming that you have benefits from the Rogaine, you should assume that your hair is minoxidil dependent. That means that if you stop the minoxidil, the hair may fall out. Propecia will not prevent this phenemonon. I would suggest that you stay on the Rogaine and get your hair mapped out for miniaturization before starting the Propecia so you know what you are doing.

Im doing research at the moment into liquid paraffin for my disitation and was wondering if u know anything about liquid paraffin and if u have ever come cross it in helping to re-grow hair. The reason i ask is, firstly due to curiosity hence my research, but also that, i came across a customer once when i was working on the pharmacy, who was askin for liquid paraffin. I asked what she was using it for and she told me that she uses it for her husband becaus she discovered that it regrows the hair. Im not sure if that is possible or safe. Can you help me at all or have any information that might help wih my research or for other people who go onto this page? Or if you know of anyone tht i an talk to about this?
Thank you very much

Liquid paraffin is used to remove hair. Constant use of it will produce traction alopecia. When used on facial or body hair, the hope is always that the hair will not grow back. Waxing your hair makes it go away, not come back. You got it backwards!
