Hair Grows to Half Inch, Then Falls Out – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Well I have a question. I’m trying to grow my hair, this is my third time trying, but when ever I get to a certain length it just stops’ growing and it starts falling out. I’m a 23year old African-American male. I don’t have a receding hair-line and its just weird that when my hair gets to be about half an inch it just start falling out. I have used and still use all of the “DO GROWN” products, and still I can not figure out why my hair falls off. I wash my hair once a week, I always put SULFER8 twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I don’t know what to do. Can you help me??

Generally, hair has a cycle that lasts from 2-6 years in my experience. I have always believed that if you let your hair grow out to its full length, take that length and divide it by 1/2 (in inches) and you will get the hair cycle. In your case, if your maximal growth is 1/2 inch, then that would tell me that your hair growth cycle is 1-2 months. If you hair grew slower, then the cycle could be longer.

I have questions for you:

  1. Does it grow to 1/2 inch everywhere, or just in one area?
  2. What about the hair around the sides and back?
  3. With African hair, the length must reflect the straight hair for the calculations above. If you hair is wiry, then you may not be measuring length, but perhaps height. How are you measuring that it is 1/2 inch length?

Practing medicine over the internet is not an easy eask when I can not examine you directly. Miniaturization metrics through mapping your scalp would be a helpful thing for me to do, to help you understand what is happening on your head.

Gentle Hair Brushing After Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am looking for a “gentle” brush (not so much for my hair, but for my scalp so that I don’t harm my transplants while the scalp is tender. I am also concerned about brushing taking out some of the hair I still have. Do you have a recommendation for me?

A soft brush or one with wide teeth will be gentler on your scalp/hair than the standard comb. Many people want to treat these new hairs from a transplant as special. As the scalp does not have normal sensation, a soft brush may also help. I tell those people who are actively losing their hair not to brush too hard, for the hairs that are fragile may be helped out of the head of the balding person with vigorous brushing. For softer more gentler combs, take a look at: Tenderheaded.com

Propecia for Diffuse Thinning? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is Propecia effective for one such as myself who has “diffuse” thinning all over the top scalp? I’m 19 and I been on the drug for a little over 3 months and I still shed is this normal? Should I give it more time to work?

Some people thing that in a limited number of individuals, the cycling of the hair growth moves in and out of its anogen phase. Prior to the anogen phase, there is often hair loss. This means that the loss may be an indication that you will have a good response when anogen comes into play. Without seeing the miniaturization of your hair under a densitometer (microscope) and your particular hair loss pattern, there is no way to answer this question. I generally like to count hairs, those that are miniaturized and those that are full normal hairs. That tells me where you are starting from when you go on Propecia. Good measurements of hair counts and miniaturization tells me a great deal about your response and puts good science and diagnosis in my hands. You need a good hair transplant doctor or Dermatologist to evaluate your hair loss pattern to see if Propecia is the right medication for your condition.

Ringworm and Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

My doctor said Rudolphs hair loss was caused by ringworm. Is this possible?

Sorry, Rudolph? Am I missing something?

Though this link is a press release for a ringworm treatment, it does contain some information about the ringworm / hair loss connection: Premature Hair Loss? Could Be Ringworm.

Avodart and Female Genetic Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

One of my friend’s doctors has prescribed Avodart for her thinning hair. Is this effective? If so, why do I not hear more about it? Can I get your to prescribe it as I am in Los Angeles?

See Effective treatment of female androgenic alopecia with dutasteride

One case does not say much about this process, but it may provide a little hope. There is no significant documentation for breast, ovary, or uterine cancer predispositions with DHT blockers. That is worrisome without a good controlled study in hand. We know that one side effect of this medication in men is breast enlargement (one in about 300 men), so the question of safety is paramount in the decision to provide this drug to women. Even for men, there are no long term studies to suggest that this drug is safe for the younger men. Any woman taking this medication while pregnant runs a high risk of producing a hermaphrodite baby (without a normal penis or vagina). This tells you a great deal about what we do not know. I will not prescribe this medication for women, and I have been very forthright against using it without adequate safety issues addressed in the proper way. I worry that articles like this, which show a single example that could be a chance occurrence having little to do with this medication, can be ascribed to the drug. Please don’t rush to your doctor or the internet and use this as a panacea for your hair loss problem, for it could just open a Pandora’s Box. I would be happy, on the other hand, to have you visit me for a diagnosis and an opinion.

Follicare and Avacor – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Dr. Rassman. I’m 31. Family history of hairloss on the male side. What is your opinion or take on the hair loss products: “Follicare” and “Avacor”. I was thinking about trying them. Tried Rogaine in the past, didn’t like the itchy scalp as a result. Also tried Propecia, but got tired of waiting and was worried about the side effects. I would appreciate your opinion.

Your fortune cookie should read: “Patience is a virtue”. Propecia is the only FDA approved drug that grows hair. You need to wait 6 months to 1 year to see its effects. If you tried Propecia and experienced no side effects, stop worrying. If you are concerned about hair loss, you should be evaluated by a qualified doctor.

Avacor has minoxidil in it as your active ingredient, which probably grows the hair that is reported. You can buy it for much less money under the generic name minoxidil.

As for Follicare, it supplies a topical spray, shampoo, and minoxidil. Seems like you’re paying lots of money for the pretty packaging. At least they sound honest about what is included in their products, and provide a buyer beware page on their site.

Generic Propecia? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I ordered generic propecia from a website that seemed to be the cheapest. They claim to be FDA approved, so i was wondering if infact there generic propecia is the same as regular propecia.

I have been taking generic propecia for about 2 weeks now. Since ive been taking it I have been getting alot of acne and i was wondering if propecia may be causing it

It is a buyer beware market. I am not aware of a generic Propecia available in the United States, since it is still under patent protection. Some other countries who do not respect patent laws may attempt to copy a drug formula, but I do not believe the FDA would approve of such practice. There is no way for me or anyone to tell if your side effect is a direct result of your generic drug. Finally, you need a qualified doctor to prescribe Propecia, so I would certainly be nervous about ordering prescription drugs like this online from a website you are not familiar with.

Homeopathic Medicine, Birth Control, and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman – I am a female and have just turned 40yrs. Last year, some time in May of 2005, I stopped taking the birth control pill, Yasmin. I initially started the pill about 5 years ago with Orthotricyclin, then changed to Levlin (due to insurance no longer covering Ortho) and then Yasmin (as I was told was not as potent and wouldn’t cause the nausea) Anyhow, I am Mexican/American and always had a thick set of hair. In the past, my hair would always fall out but still always remained thick; however, after I stopped taking the pill (for which I never consulted my doctor before stopping) I realized my hair was still falling out but after seven months later, realized that the thickness and volume were gone. I’ve always had thicker hair than my older sisters (now 41 and 43) but now theirs still has thickenss & weight whereas mine is literally thinner & has a featherlike feel to it. I’ve been a Kaiser dermatologist who says it’s just part of aging and that my hormones are normal (blood testing was done) however, after seeing a homopathic doctor (without me mentioning my symtoms) she advised that my hormones are not balanced. I have not yet been treated for this imbalance thus far.

My question to you is if I go back on the pill — Yasmin — will my hair slowly come back? As you can see, I’m still off the pill but very tempted to start up again. Had I known the side affects, I would never have discontinued use.

Please reply at your earliest opportunity.

P.S. In the meantime, I am using Nioxin Cleanser and Scalp treatment for thinning hair. Also, I do have lots of fine baby regrowth around my temple area & some wiring hair coming down the center of my head. Does this mean my hair is coming back and will it ever be as thick again?

First off, I am not a homeopathic doctor. We here are allopathic medical doctors. So, if your homeopathic doctor says your hormones are not in balance, I cannot comment on the homeopathic doctor’s opinion or diagnosis. I can only comment on the fact that if your medical doctor has done all the appropriate blood work and states that your hormone levels are “normal”, the cause of your hair loss may be coming from other sources such as age. Having said that, you may be going through early menopause and other hormonal changes which are “normal” parts of the aging process. I cannot tell you that starting Yasmin will help your hair grow back. More importantly, starting and stopping any hormone treatment (such as birth control pills) should be discussed with a medical doctor that has been following your health.

As far as your question on Nioxin, it is a popular shampoo and the company sells other products that are talked up by my readers. We still put forth a buyer beware position, and if you are asking if such products do what they claim to do, I do not have the answer (as you have read many times in this blog). Minoxidil (Rogaine) is the only FDA approved topical treatment for hair loss.

Finally if your homeopathic doctor has a solution to grow hair then he/she will be a rich man/woman if the treatment actually works. Please let us know the results if you take the olive branch and try to get into the balance that your homeopathic doctor recommends (particularly if it succeeds).

Skin Different Color Under Widow’s Peak? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hey when i get a haircut my barber shaves my widows peak off but for some reason it doesnt show my skin it shows like this blue stuff. Do you know how i can solve this problem. Thanks alot.

If you are talking about the ‘blue stuff’ meaning the freshly growing look of a shaved area (stubble), then you could use make-up to cover it. Bad turn of the cards — there are many out there that would love to have a natural widow’s peak. You, on the other hand, don’t like it. Seems to apply to many things in life, right?

Trichup Oil – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Sir,
I came to know about this website thru one of the search engine. I am 52. I was getting bald because of stressful life. One of my friend in London recommended me one very interesting product. The name of the product is Trichup Oil. It is a special kind of hair oil I used for a month and I found my hair loss stopped. In the second month I saw new hair growth. It was really surpriced for me but now I am regularly using this oil and my hair is very healthy.

Thanks for including my letter on your website. Best wishes.

I don’t know much about the chemical in this product. It does not have the science I like to see, so I can not recommend it. If it works for you, then that sounds good. Those interested can look at: VasuPharma.com
