Can X-Rays Cause Hair Loss?

Sir does xrays causes telogen effluvium, or accelerates hair fall in patients with male pattern baldness?

radiation

X-ray is a type of electromagnetic radiation that is all around us. It falls between the ultraviolet light and gamma rays in the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. A certain amount of X-rays is all around us so your question depends on the amount of x-ray radiation one receives or the location of where the x-ray is being received.

I would guess that you would need a ridiculous amount of x-rays delivered to your scalp to start worrying about hair loss. At that point hair loss would probably be the last of your concerns as you are dying from radiation poisoning. (I’m being facetious.) Cancer patients receiving radiation to their brain can develop local hair loss (but that’s not x-rays).

A simple chest x-ray, CT scan, or airport security should be insignificant in terms of hair loss.

This is probably the first time I write, please follow up with your physicist.

Of interesting note: “Reported in Scientific American, This Week in World War I: January 30, 1915

X-rays were used for medical operations within a couple of months after they were discovered by Wilhelm Roentgen in late 1895.

Can you comb too hard?

This is a good and important question. People who have early miniaturized hairs can pull them out with rough combing or brushing. When you brush, use a coarse hair brush with wide spacing so you don’t pull on your hair.

Can You Get More Grafts from Strip or FUE Over a Lifetime?

Many thanks doctors for providing help to all of us!! Your blog is very interesting.

How many grafts it is possible to extract from a caucasian male with an average donor supply over the course of his life? Does it make a difference whether it is a FUE or strip? 9,000?

This is a debate among many hair transplant doctors themselves. In my opinion, you would get the most number of grafts and hairs with the strip procedure over a lifetime to make an overall cosmetic difference. FUE (follicular unit extraction) grafts can sometimes have less hairs per graft than those harvested using the strip method. So over a lifetime FUE grafts may produce less coverage.

For maximum harvest in a theoretical scenario, you would maximize the grafts with the strip then use the FUE method when the donor area is more limited.

Yes, there is far more patchiness than I would expect to see. This was caused either by donor over-harvesting or vascular complications of the donor area which may reverse within 6 months of the surgery, so by that time you will know more. I also noticed that the grafts were harvested very high and also too low, probably outside the permanent zone. If you should develop any advanced balding, these grafts may not be permanent. The donor area is usually no more than 3 inches high (see here: https://baldingblog.com/2017/08/04/permanent-zone-hair-lasts-lifetime/). If the patchiness remains, then you might consider scalp micropigmentation, something we do all of the time, see website: https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/

Can you clear up some hair terminology for me?

Thinking about a hair transplant, but I have some doubts about terminology: what is the difference between a graft, a follicle and a hair?

Hairs are the product of the body and is created in the manufacturing apparatus called a hair follicle. Hair follicles grow in groups and each group is called a follicular unit (often called grafts when moved in hair transplants).

Can You Harvest 5000 Grafts At Once? I Just Want One Surgery. Mega Session.

Can You Harvest 5000 Grafts At Once? I Just Want One Surgery. I don’t want to come back for another surgery.

If you are familiar with New Hair Institute and Dr. Rassman’s (founder) work, he is the doctor who started the “Mega-Session” 3000+ grafts hair transplants back in in 1995

Being able to provide a 5000 graft surgery has TWO factors.
1) Man power and the expertise to coordinate such a surgery. * We have this and we have been doing it since 1995
2) Patient’s donor area and scalp laxity has to have the supply. If YOU don’t have (A) high donor density with (B) good scalp laxity no surgeon can harvest 5000 grafts
You must also understand that a high number of graft harvest just means more scalp that needs to be “cut out”. There is no secret magic surgical technique about this fact.
A 5000 graft surgical scar will be FIVE times LONGER than a 1000 graft surgical scar. This means you will have an ear to ear surgical scar. A scar over and past your ears.
As a reference, a typical 2500 graft surgical scar is mostly behind the ear.
Unless your scalp is loose as a Shar Pei Dog, a 5000 graft scar will be past over your ears.

It is my hope you can appreciate the technical aspect of a hair transplant surgery. If you can understand this, you will be a better informed patient to participate in your own surgical planning.

Not Hair Loss News – Can You Knock Some Brains Into Yourself?

In an issue of Scientific American, a young 10 year-old boy was knocked unconscious one day by a baseball. After the accident, he could recall the “exact day of the week for any date after the accident and could remember the weather for each day since the trauma”… along with “minute daily events”. Another example of a victim of a brutal mugging in 2002. He began seeing images and was able to sketch them on paper. His images reflected ‘fractals‘ a mathematical repeating pattern. This is called an “acquired savant Syndrome”, a near genius level of brain function that appeared after the injury. This syndrome can appear after a blow to the head or some brain insult.

Many of the affected people can develop the ability to create poetry, paint or play a musical instrument where there was never a talent for this before. Some researchers and experts in the field think that there is a ‘genius’ switch in the brain and are looking for ways to be able to turn it on. I want to volunteer for this type of experimentation. I wish I could knock this type of ‘brains’ into the crazy people in this world who just don’t get the basic value of life and would rather make war than appreciate all of the beauty on this planet for the short time we will be here.
