10 year Japanese Study of Finasteride use

This graph taken from the article below, tells us a great deal about long term finasteride use by pattern of hair loss. Look at the stabilizing effect on the progressive nature hair genetic hair loss once the pattern has been achieved (about 5 years into the study). It appears that many of the less advanced patterns of hair loss, have even gained some hair over the 10 year study.

10 Months Since Chemo And Hair Has Still Not Fully Regrown

My son who is 21 completed a 4 cycle chemo treatment in May 05. Today his hair is still very thin, fine and spots of balding. I have left a message today with his doctor for some advise when I saw your web page. Any suggestions? I know hair growth takes a while but it is going on 10 months now. Thanks!

Hair loss during and after chemotherapy is one of the most distressing side effects. Hair loss occurs because chemotherapy targets all living cells in the body including hair follicle cells. Simply put, chemotherapy is poison to all living cells. It is a medical balancing game where the cancer cells are killed before the chemotherapy kills you.

Hair follicle cells have three phases of growth:

  1. Growth phase (Anagen phase) which lasts anywhere from 2 to 6 years. This is the phase where your hair is actively growing at approximately 10cm per year. 85% of hair is at this phase at any given time.
  2. Transitional phase (Catagen phase) which lasts about 2 weeks. This is the phase where the hair follicle shrinks and prepares to enter the resting phase.
  3. Resting phase (Telogen phase) which lasts about 1- 2 months. This is the phase where hair does not grow but stays attached to the follicle. Some hairs are shed at this phase, but at the end the hair follicle re-enters the growth phase to start the cycle over again. 10-15% of hairs are at this phase at any given time.

During chemotherapy, hair in the growth phase is most affected due to the active nature of the hair follicle. Ideally, hair lost during chemotherapy should start to grow after 3 to 6 months. Unfortunately, new hair may grow thinner, slower, or with different texture or color.

Your son’s hair growth seems to be returing, but at a much slower rate than you have anticipated. This may be due to the 4 cycles of chemotherapy. This may also be due to the fact that your son’s body is recovering at a different rate than expected. It may just be a normal recovery pace for your son. Ultimately, if your son is healthy and is in remission, that is the most important priority. Neverthess, hair loss is certainly the most visible and distressing side effect of chemotherapy and a stigmata of cancer. There are a number of support groups and wigs available to chemotherapy patients, which are sometimes even covered by insurance companies. Finally, topical creams or Propecia would not be of benefit for hair loss from chemotherapy.

1 year on minoxidil (photo)

This photo shows that minoxidil alone can reverse hair loss and cause new hair growth in the frontal hairline. Some of the growth appears recent with early corner filling

14 year old with thinning (photo)

I’m 14 and look at my hair, it is falling out big-time. I have met with 2 doctors so far and no doctor has given me a reason or a treatment

You have considerable thinning. Do you have anything medical going on, some disease, something else you inherited? What does your father and grandfathers and uncles and brothers have for hair loss? Are you taking any medications? Hove you had rapid weight loss recently? What is your Vitamin D level? Basic questions that must be answered.

This man shaved his head so that he could tell the benefits of finasteride better with photos. He had restoration of much of the crown and some or the frontal hairs. This is not unusual in most men responds better in the crown.

13 Year Old Getting White Hairs

Hi. I’m 13 years old and i’ve been having a lot of white hairs. about 5-10. I’m not sure if its because of stress. but i’ve only started to notice when i was about 11-12. Do you think it’s maybe generic or something on the lines of that? because my dad thinks i have an illness…

Getting white hair at an early age does not mean you have an illness. Some people will see their hair turn white or gray at a very early age. It is genetics. In very rare instances, if there are gray hairs in a patch it can sometimes signify a rare genetic disease such as Waardenburg Syndrome, but you are not describing that problem.

This man seemed to be responsive to the combination of finasteride and minoxidil working together to reverse crown hair loss; however, the photo qualitative difference alone could produce such changes

10 years of finasteride, now my libido is down

I’m a long term user of Fin since 21 years old. Can honestly say I haven’t experienced one single side the entire time I’ve been taking it. I only take a quarter tablet every night 0.25mg I’m almost 31 in a few weeks. I’ve noticed over the past month or so my libido has decreased enough for me to notice.. I don’t have trouble getting erections, and I still wake up with one as well But I can go days without feeling the need to masturbate where I used to get the urge every day. My interest in the opposite sex has seemingly waned as well, I’m more focused on working out/exercising and my other hobbies. I’m trying to narrow down what could be causing it. Fin was obviously the first thing to spring to mind, could it be after years of no sides I could get them suddenly?

Yes, some men reported this to me. The problem is that as men get older, ED becomes a problem without finasteride and so does a reduced libido in some men, so it is difficult to tell if it is the drug unless they stop it and if they stop it, then the could lose considerable hair volume.
