13 Year Old Getting White Hairs

Hi. I’m 13 years old and i’ve been having a lot of white hairs. about 5-10. I’m not sure if its because of stress. but i’ve only started to notice when i was about 11-12. Do you think it’s maybe generic or something on the lines of that? because my dad thinks i have an illness…

Getting white hair at an early age does not mean you have an illness. Some people will see their hair turn white or gray at a very early age. It is genetics. In very rare instances, if there are gray hairs in a patch it can sometimes signify a rare genetic disease such as Waardenburg Syndrome, but you are not describing that problem.

100% Donor Scar Elimination?

Dr. Rassman,

Do you think that 100% elimination of donor scars will be possible in the future? Technology is always improving and it seems like scars could be emliminated. Are there any other possibilities other than Juvista and Acell that are being researched? Thank you for all the helpful information.

Scarring happens as a result of all surgeries. There is no such thing as 100% elimination of a scar and treatments like Juvista and Acell will not dispose of scars entirely. The key to dealing with scars is to keep them very, very small. In the case of a donor scar, it can be as small as 1mm wide naturally in good healers, or reduced to that level on occasion. For bad healers, there really is no solution. By “bad healers” I mean those people who stretch their scars after the wound has healed.

Techniques such as the trichophytic closure repair of a wound in the donor area works well in many, but not all patients. For more info on the trichophytic closure technique, see here and here.

1/4 Tablet of Proscar with Breakfast

If i take 1/4 proscar with breakfast will it get absorbed in my blood streem or is the tablet just too small after it is mixed with food? Do you think it is better to take it on a empty stomach? Thanks

I’ve often said that in my opinion, it is best to take it before breakfast. I generally think that it is best taken on an empty stomach although it probably makes no difference on the absorption issue.

1000 hairs lost last night

I have been on finasteride for 2 years but today suddenly in the shower my hair started coming out in clumps. I’ve lost so much density, I bet more than 1000 hair went down the drain and additional hundred more when I was drying it. This includes the back and the sides of my head. I am panicking so much because when I started I only had mild temple recession with no hair loss anywhere else , and now this happened.

How old are you? If you are young, maybe you started to accelerate your balding genetics. This can happen if you are unusually stressed. Does that apply to you? if you are very worried, see a dermatologist of a hair specialist like me if yu in Southern California.

10 year Japanese Study of Finasteride use

This graph taken from the article below, tells us a great deal about long term finasteride use by pattern of hair loss. Look at the stabilizing effect on the progressive nature hair genetic hair loss once the pattern has been achieved (about 5 years into the study). It appears that many of the less advanced patterns of hair loss, have even gained some hair over the 10 year study.

10 months on minoxidil and finasteride (photo)

These are very nice results, especially in the crown which is more predictable. The frontal hairline is starting to grow out as well.
