Poor Growth at 7 Months, Will PRP Help?

It seems that you are concerned about growth. At seven months, you still might expect to see more growth. I always tell my patients that at eight months you should see 80% of the growth to styling length. I doubt that this is going to happen, but you should wait another month or two. PRP will not make hair transplants grow. Only excellent surgery gets results. Depending on how many grafts you received, you might question this. If you don’t see an improvement in another two or three months, go back and have a conversation with your surgeon.

August Is National Hair Loss Awareness Month

This August marks the 13th year for National Hair Loss Awareness Month, which was established by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) to raise awareness about this treatable condition that affects an estimated 60 million men and 40 million women in America.

The above snippet is from a press release I was sent, and I want to elaborate about how this is a treatable condition.

For those of you who look into the mirror every morning and see the signs of hair loss, you should know that there are many options available for you to slow, stop, or reverse hair loss without surgery by using medications such as finasteride (for men) and minoxidil (for men and women). Additionally, there other modalities that can make your hair look thicker without surgery, such as Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP). Of course, there is also hair transplant surgery, an example of which can be found here.

Granted, many readers of this site are knowledgeable about the treatment options available, but just in case some of you weren’t familiar with them, I hope the above was helpful.

Be Aware of Seven Questionable Clinics That Offer Stem Cell Treatments

In Medscape today, there is an article with the warning of the above title. “There are a number of pitfalls for patients, noted study co-author Douglas Sipp of Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo.

“It is a problem for patients because there are inevitable risks in any invasive procedure, the vast majority of stem cell treatments being advertised online show exceedingly poor evidence of efficacy, they are costly and not reimbursed by most insurance, and more generally, the waste of time and resources on over-promoted quack remedies diverts these away from investment and use of in scientifically credible medicine,” Sipp said by email.”

In the hair industry, more and more such clinics are appearing almost weekly. There are two important issue: (1) the risks may not be inconsequential to your overall health and the health of your scalp and hair, and (2) they will be fleecing you for the money in your pockets.

I Have Let My Hair Grow Out 3 Months and the Back of My Head Looks like It Is Balding

You have significant donor site depletion. This problem is caused by over-harvesting the grafts from your FUE three months earlier. The only thing you can do is to get Scalp MicroPigmentation, which will hide the balding spots, but it will not add hair.

Avodart Gave Me Severe Abdominal Cramps

Dear Sir .. I am suffering from severe hair loss since last one year.

Recently my doctor prescribe me the Dutasteride (Avodart) Medication for hair loss prevention. I continued the medication for 10 days and then I started to get severe Abdominal Muscle Cramps. After I stopped taking this medication the pain subsided slowly. I have recently read the article about Prostaglandin D2 protein and baldness on some website. Wanted to know that the Dutasteride is the cure for Prostaglandin D2.

Now I am confused that should I continue the Avodart medication or should I discontinue it permanently. I want my hair so I wanted to have your help, If you can prescribe me a good medication for hair loss prevention and regrowth .. So that I can discuss your prescription with my doctor.

Will be thankful for your reply and suggestions.

Regards

First things first — Avodart (dutasteride) is not approved for treating androgenic alopecia, and I don’t know what dose you’re even taking. I’ve read internet reports of abdominal cramping for some users upon starting Avodart, but I don’t really have much info beyond that. With respect to taking a prescription medication, you need to discuss these issues with the doctor that prescribed you the medication, especially if you feel you are having side effects!

As far as I am aware, dutasteride has no correlation with prostaglandin D2.

Avodart and Androgenic Alopecia in Women

What information did you learn about Avodart’s effectiveness in treating androgenic alopecia at the Sept. ’05 conference in Sydney, Aust.? Any hope for female pattern hair loss?

Avodart (dutasteride) may have value in those men where Propecia (finasteride) fails to work, but as it is not FDA approved for treating hair loss I can not in good conscience wholeheartedly endorse it. It does not show value in women.

Avodart (Dutasteride) vs Propecia

Hi.DR.RASSMAN, I would like to know if type 1 DHT causes hairloss?? or is it just type 2..?? Please let me know when you get a chance… and do you think they will becoming out with anything better then propecia in the near future???

Propecia is a type 2 competitive inhibitor of DHT and Avodart is a competitive inhibitor of both Type 1 and Type 2 receptors. I think that is what you are asking. There is no clear evidence that blocking both Type 1 and type 2 receptors is better. What we do know is the Avodart does drop the DHT level in the blood stream more effectively than Finasteride (90% vs 75%). What this means is suggestive that it might work better in some people. But I must state clearly that safety and effectiveness is the mainstay of the FDA and until we have a handle on these two issues, I believe it is better to stick to Finasteride.

August is Hair Loss Awareness Month

Just learned that this month is Hair Loss Awareness Month, as determined by the American Academy of Dermatology. This is from the press release —

“Hair loss affects 80 million American men and women and while it isn’t life-threatening, it can cause emotional distress,” said Dr. Draelos. “Disease, genetic predisposition and even poor cosmetic grooming practices all cause hair loss. Even simple changes in your hair care routine can result in healthier hair.”

You can read the entire press release here. So when is Hair Restoration Surgeon Month? 🙂
