Dairy Cattle vs Beef Cattle — Worried About Steroid Hormones in Milk!

You used to be a dairy farmer, correct? Is there a difference between dairy cattle and beef cattle? I always assumed they got milk from the females and meat from both males and females.

Can you clarify this? I’m asking b/c if they only use steroid hormones in beef cattle, then drinking milk would presumably be clear from any steroid hormones.

MilkIf you are worried about hormones in your milk, you can start with organic food stores and inquire about where they get their milk. I believe you are the same reader that sent me the earlier posted email about how steroids in milk (when used) get broken down by the acid in the stomach so it does not get absorbed into the body (see Growth Hormones in Milk).

From the Wikipedia entry for “cattle” —
Cattle raised for human consumption are called “beef cattle”. Within the beef cattle industry in parts of the United States, the term “beef” (plural “beeves”) is still used in its archaic sense to refer to an animal of either gender. Cows of certain breeds that are kept for the milk they give are called “dairy cows” or “milking cows” (formerly “milch cows” – “milch” was pronounced as “milk”) and their genetics are such that they produce high milk outputs whereas beef cattle are genetically created for their muscle mass.

Male bovine are called bulls (or steers if they are castrated) — and they do not have udders, nor do they produce dairy milk.

Dermaroller: How deep do I have to go?

Just picked up two dermarollers. One that is 0.5mm, and one that is 1.5mm. 0.5mm seems fine, peach-fuzz length, I’m fine with it. 1.5mm seems like it is going to puncture through to my cortex

Logic would dictate a depth of about 1mm as adequate as the scalp epidermis is only 0.5mm thick so needles need to go down to a depth of at least 1mm just below it to where the stem cells can get activated. Use minoxidil with it as it helps.

I Have Developed Lumps in My Donor Area 1 Month After My FUE

These lumps may be caused by buried grafts that were pushed under the skin of the donor area at the time the FUE was done. These, if they get infected or are painful, should be excised surgically. Here is an example of buried grafts that was removed after an FUE was incorrectly performed. If you look carefully at each lump, there are hairs and grafts inside the lumps.

Developed Facial Swelling from Propecia?

hiya i was taking propecia last year for about 6 months and it was great. i started again very recently and i’ve deleloped swelling in the face of my skin, i have stopped now. i’m just wondering if there is anything i can take that can counteract that and be able to still take propecia because it worked so perfect a such a long time before?
thankyou

I have never heard of Propecia causing facial swelling, but drug allergies sometimes present that way. It can happen with any medication. Facial swelling can sometimes be related to tongue and throat swelling, which may be life threatening if the allergy presents in its worse form. While life threatening issues from the use of Propecia (to my knowledge) have never been reported, it is still a remote possibility. And with only the information you provided without a physical exam and complete medical history, it is impossible to give you any advice other than to see your doctor and share these concerns with him/her.

Depo-Provera Caused Hair Loss?

I took a shot of deproprovera 2 1/2 years ago, and 3 months after I decided not to get another shot (b/c of weight gain and shoulder/neck aches) may hair started falling out like crazy, now it is 2 1/2 years later and it is still falling out, about 30-50 in the shower/combing out every morning. I’m down to about 1/2 the hair I had 2 years ago. Any advice? It is so frustrating. My 3 sisters have not hair loss issues (in fact 2 of them complain about too thick of hair). My mother’s hair has thinned the last 5 years because she is on strong cancer/rheumatoid arthritis drugs, but no problems before that (all my male/female relatives have hair also-my dad’s is thick at 68 years old-no bald men in my family, and woman all have hair too. Help. 2 dermatologists say I have TE and to ride it out.

Depo-Provera is a contraceptive and has hair loss as a known side effect (between 1-5% of women), as do many birth control pills. Female genetic hair loss does not follow the patterns of genetic inheritance that run on the male side of the family, but it is not unusual for women who have genetic hair loss to have other women (mothers, aunts, sisters, grandmothers) with similar histories and findings.

A Dermatologist Just Looked at Me and Told Me I Had MPB. Is It That Easy to Make This Diagnosis?

Well, my dermatologist just looked at my hair and said I have androgenic alopecia. The thing which is troubling me is that she didn’t take any tests. And again, I don’t have a family history of hair loss. So I don’t know why I’m suffering from mbp.

See another doctor who specializes in hair loss. You can find them on the ISHRS.org website. I would look to find a local doctor from that site. You need a real examination and don’t need to live in fear.

Desperation Affects Reasoning

Doctor,

You’ve said it before, and I agree with you that people suffering from hair loss, in their hopes of being delivered from their pain, are willing to believe too resolutely in products that
promise them a cure.

This article says it all: Threats To Hope: Desperation Affects Reasoning About Product Information

I hope everyone reads it and thereby removes the poor decision-making skills that sometimes accompanies their desperation.

Excellent. Thank you for sending this!

DermMatch and Toppik

I came across your website and was impressed with the information you provide. I am a 35 year old caucasian male with black hair who has been losing his hair for the last 6-8 years. I may eventually have a transplant and while I am saving my pennies, I would like your advice on a temporary short-term cosmetic solution to give me thicker hair. I have read about many of the botanical solutions you discussed and I know you cannot believe most of the stuff you read on most websites about hair thickening techniques. However, in at least one blog post you said that DermMatch helped improve someone’s appearance. Can you recommend which of the above topical solution, and let me know if they are safe?

Toppik and DermMatch are good products that can be looked at like cosmetics for hair. DermMarch can be found at DermMatch.com and Toppik can be found at Regrow.com.

The products work differently. DermMatch is a scalp coloring agent (like a cosmetic for the scalp), while Toppik has fibers that cling to the hair. Each have their advantages, but you need some hair for either one of them to bring value. They are relatively inexpensive, worth trying both at least once. They wash right out in the shower.

DermaRoller

Can you please comment as to your opinion of the dermaroller? Thank you

Honestly… it looks painful. Its a roller with little spikes on it to open the scalp so that it can absorb minoxidil better. The site claims that it is pain-free though. I cannot really comment on how much of a benefit (if any) it has or if it really works, but the theory and concept seem valid.

Actually, I have one next to me as I am writing this blog. I ordered one to see it for myself. While the idea sounds good, like many good ideas, they often fail during the implementation. I’ve seen these for sale at a variety of online stores, from Amazon to Saks Fifth Avenue, so I’m sure there are plenty of users out there. If anyone has had experience using the Derma Roller, please write in to share your findings.
