Does Hair Transplantation Hurt?

Hair transplanting looks like it hurts! Does it hurt is my question? I saw the video and almost threw up. So please respond to my question! Does it hurt? Especially with at least a couple of thousand grafts! Please respond! Thank you for your time.

Yes, part of the process is painful. The first part (with anesthesia) hurts for about 1 minute. This part can be subsidized with appropriate medications to reduce the pain and possibly eliminate it if you choose this option. The more medications, the slightly more risk you may experience with side effects. Pain is also present after the surgery. If you elect to have an FUE procedure, the pain is very minimal and rarely takes any medications after surgery. If you have a strip harvesting procedure, then there is pain in the donor area, particularly more on the first night, which is easily treated with strong medications that are supplied by us. Some doctors do not like to use the word ‘pain’ because its meaning might frighten patients away, so the word discomfort is used instead. Discomfort = Pain!

On the other hand. there is also the pain of hair loss. This pain is often described by our patients as far worse than anything that they experienced in the surgery. As the old saying goes, “No Pain, No Gain” which essentially means that you need to weigh what you are willing to experience against what you are not willing to experience. A 2,000 graft procedure does not really hurt more than a 500 graft procedure. I prefer the larger procedures, because the patient has to invest less time and have less surgeries to get the final end product of their hair restoration desires.

Do transplants thin your hair?

Hair transplant surgery tends to accelerate those hairs at the end of their life in advanced stages of miniaturization; however, this can be stopped most of the time when a person takes finasteride

Does hard water cause hair loss?

Is there any lived experience, or any study, suggesting that you can experience hair fall if you wash your hair in hard water? I understand hard water as the type of naturally available water from a well or a pond that has a higher level of minerals. I am asking because I saw an ad for a hard water filter for shower heads.

No. Hard water doesn’t cause hair loss. Genes working with your DHT causes hair loss

Does Hair Age?

Does hair age?

Of course hair shows the effect of aging and it will often change as we get older. Look at the huge crop of large diameter hairs in the ponytail of a twenty two year old women and think of the meager, thin hair of some 80 year old women. Hair often gets smaller in diameter and fewer in number as we age.

The process of getting finer shafts (or lower densities of the hair) with age occurs insidiously over many years, starting in some people in their early 20s (male and female) and progressively becoming more frequent with each decade. We just notice the changes when we look at an isolated 80 year old in a nursing home and we think ‘Old’. The medical profession calls this type of thinning ‘senile alopecia’ (doctors have to use some Latin to create a medical mystique to it). Most people will notice that their adult hair changes in character as their age advances. This change in character may be from wavy to straight, or from thick gorilla hair to a see through appearance where the scalp can be seen in reasonably bright light (htat may never have been the case in that same person when they were 20). I would suspect that the thinning of hair densities occurs in fully 1/3rd of the adult population (male and female) at some time during their lifetime and I see this process in some men who are in their early 20s, which we now call ‘diffuse unpatterned alopecia’, yet another abuse of the latin language of olden days.

Does microneedling create new follicles?

Microneedling stimulates the release various platelets, proteins, growth factors, stem cells and new vasculature resulting in the formation of collagen and activation of stem cells which may produce hair along with the healing process.

Does Liposomal Finasteride go systemic?

Do you know a good dosage for liposomal? I have a 0.1% fin 5% min liposomal gel that I custom ordered, applying 1ml every day. But I’ve seen some places sell the liposomal gel at fricken 2.5% fin. I had an online pharmacist explain that the liposomal mechanism means this higher dosage is effective and safe, but as someone who got sides from just 0.25 mg of oral fin EOD, it seems like an absurd risk. Any insight? At the end of the day I just don’t want to be dicking around with the 0.1% liposomal gel if it’s ineffective and I’m still losing ground.

From my research, 82% of the topical liposomal finasteride stays in the skin. You can calculate that if 18% goes systemic, what the equivalent dose would be for the liposomal preparation. That is the reason I titrate upwards when I prescribe it assuming that 18% of the dose might go systemic, so that would be 18% of the 0.01%. My experience so far is that one out of hundreds of my patients developed sexual side effects. I have written a series of post on https://baldingblog.com/ addressing topical liposomal finasteride which you might want to read.

Does Long Hair Shed More?

I grew out my hair a while ago and noticed way more hairs falling out in the shower and kinda freaked out too. It turned out that I was just noticing it more because it was longer 99% sure the answer is no, but wanted to ask just in case. I’ve been on finasteride for almost 10 years now and it’s worked really well, but around a month ago I decided to grow our my hair a little (it’s still pretty short, just longer than before) and I’ve noticed considerably more shedding when washing my hair, on the pillow etc. Is it just coincidence? Am I just noticing it more because it’s longer? Did anyone else experience actually more shedding with longer hair?

When hair is miniaturized, long miniaturized hairs are easier to pull out if you brush or comb roughly.

Does Having a Lot of Body Hair Cause Faster Balding?

Hello, i’m a 16 year old male sophomore. I’ve tried searching for the answer to my question, but no one seems to have a definite answer to it yet. Does having a lot of body hair cause baldness faster/cause baldness? I ask this because, while I may not be completely covered in hair (at least not yet…I hope not though) my legs are very very hairy.

My arms have more hair then most, but its not to out of control, and my chest is mostly clear of hair, theres nothing noticeable. But I won’t lie, I am scared to have body hair, I don’t particularly like it, and i’ve also noticed that men who have more body hair seem to have less head hair, I don’t know if this is just a coincidence, but nonetheless I am still concerned, even though I still have a full head of hair. I’m just not sure how the future will play out for my body. Though I can say that while my dads side has a lot of hairy men, no one in my family has ever truly gone bald before. However, I could be an unlucky exception.

Thanks for reading, and hopefully my question is answered!

Body hair and head hair do not relate to each other, as they are separately genetic coded. Men with hairy bodies can have hairy heads with or without balding on the scalp. If you think that you are losing hair, then visit a good hair doctor who will determine if you are losing hair on your head or not.

Does It Matter Where Rogaine is Applied on the Scalp?

When applying rogaine, does it matter where you apply it on the scalp for it to work? Doesnt it get absorbed in the blood vessels and spreads out throught out your scalp?

For example if you apply it on the top wouldnt it work for the front as well, or does it have to be applied on the exact area of hairloss? Thanks

I would follow the instructions including in the packaging. The basic idea is that you apply Rogaine (minoxidil) where you want hair to grow, twice daily. If you apply it on the top, it wouldn’t really do much for the front.
