21 years old and just starting my hair loss treatment

So I went to a GP as I wanted to get a prescription for Finasteride. Of course the doctor had never heard of the drug and apparently he had never had anyone come to him about hair loss. He started reading about the drug online and asked if I had tried minoxidil. I told him that I have been on minoxidil for two weeks but I wanted to use both treatments together. He responded to this by telling me that I should only use one treatment at a time and that I would have to choose which one I wanted to use. I told him I’d choose Finasteride and he wrote me script for it. I’m still considering using the two treatments together as I can’t find anywhere that says there’s something wrong with using these two treatments together. Has anyone else heard of this before and do you think that I should still use Minoxidil and Finasteride together anyways?

Brief History: I’m a 21 year old male, started noticing my hairline receding 2 years ago, it has been receding very slowly ever since but my hair loss has progressed to the point where I need to stop it before it becomes too noticeable. No hair loss on the crown and all my hair is still very thick.

If you have a balding or thinning area already, using minoxidil on it in addition to finastetide is something I often recommend. I like to get a HAIRCHECK test on all of my patients to be able to measure the progression or the reversal of hair loss while you are under treatment.

Balding Blog – 2015 – Hair Loss Information

http://www.pressreleaserocket.net/the-aesthetic-surgery-journal-publishes-groundbreaking-study-on-nape-hair-for-fue-hair-transplantation/328237/

Taking neck hair, which is often finer than scalp hair, has problems with it. These problems include:

(1) more prominent scarring occurs in the neck and the neck area is very visible so such scars will be detectable as punctate scars

(2) neck hair is often not permanent hair as scalp hair is, so if one transplants the frontal hairline with these finer hairs, they may disappear with age.

This is a warning to those who see this press release. They must know the risks associated with a neck hair donor area.

22 year old received 3500 FUE grafts in the frontal one inch of his hairline (photo)

In the US, this type of surgery would be considered malpractice. You have almost certainly used more than half of your donor hair for the recipient area that was transplanted, so if you lose more hair behind this, you may not have enough hair left to follow the hair loss behind the transplanted area. You must recognize that hair loss is generally a progressive process and you need to have a Master Plan to account for the progressive nature of your hairloss. I hope that you don’t bald further but if you do, find an honorable doctor who understands such situations and will work with you with a high standard of care and management. Most young men are limited to between 5000-7000 FUE grafts during their lifetime unless their donor density is very high.

I am 20 years old, can I have a hair transplant or should I wait?

You are correct to wait until you are older to be sure where your balding pattern will show up so you will know what you are in store for. Your family history might indicate where your balding may be going. Look at your brothers, uncles, father and grandparents on both sides of the family to see what they hair loss pattern is/was, Usually by the age of 25, you will know and you can then build a Master Plan with your doctor.

23 Days After Surgery, The Hair Never Fell Out!

Dear Sir:
i had FUT 23 days ago and my doctor told me that the transplanted hair will fall out in two weeks, then start to grow again. The transplanted hair didn’t fall out up until now and the hair covers the bald area and i feel that it is slightly longer. is this is a good sign and means complete success of surgery? or does it mean nothing? thanks for your time and patience and hoping to answer me back.

If it continues to grow, you will be like 5% of people who never lose the hair after a transplant. You won’t know for another few weeks and it is not unusual that the hair appears to be growing as it is being pushed out of the skin. The hair length below the skin varies with race, but for a Caucasian, the length is between 5-6 mm, for an Asian it is often longer by a mm or so. I hope that you join the ranks of the 5% who keep on growing. Drop me a line and let me know and I will post your comment here on the blog linked to this post.

22 and very depressed over my hair loss! (from Reddit)

Rather than obsess over your situation, meet with a doctor who is in this field of hair restoration and start building a Master Plan for your hair loss. I usually start by performing a HAIRCHECK instrument test on my patients to determine a baseline for the hair loss. Then, I start medications which would be appropriate for someone of your age. I follow the progress over a year or two. If the balding continues and gets worse, I might then consider a hair transplant but I must know you and you should get to know and trust your doctor over that time he treats you with medications. With trust, you can get your hair back and address your depression by taking action.

2011 ISHRS Meeting Review, Part 2 – Female Hair Loss

ISHRS 2011

Note: The annual meeting of hair surgeons was in held in Alaska this past week. The following review is very selective and is biased by the things that were interesting to me and what I (Dr. Rassman) thought could be interesting to the readers.

This is part 2. More to come…

What is the role of immunity in the development of androgenic alopecia in women?

In men and women, it was suggested that there is an immune response in genetic hair loss that could either trigger the process or be an early sign that hair loss is about to start. Dr. Neil Sadick of New York has been following female hair loss for years. He showed his results from scalp biopsies of the scalp in women with hair loss. What he saw were findings that were similar to the conditions found in diseases like lupus (an autoimmune disease). He believes that female pattern hair loss is attributable to immune driven inflammation and he believes that this interferes with hair stem cell activity as they enter into the growth phase of the hair cycle.

The earliest symptoms of many women and some men start with pain and itching of the scalp, a set of symptoms that reflect the inflammatory response that he believes is always present, but often ignored. He raises the issue that if the connection is correct, the scalp may respond to the use of steroids in the earliest phases of the hair loss process.

Double trichophytic closures

Double trichophytic closures were demonstrated in a poster presentation, suggesting that this procedure can “wipe out” scars from FUE in 99% of patients. I personally doubt this claim. This reflects first time surgery patients only, as these patients are at a lower risk for significant scarring.

21 and shaved my head, what to do?

You are a great candidate for medications and microneedling. Your age means that the hair loss is recent and your chances of reversal of the hair loss are good.
