Female Hair Loss and No Family History to Look At

Hello,
I have been losing my hair for the past 2 years. It started falling out in droves when I was on Ortho Lo and started taking Bupriprion, then Lexapro then back to Buproprion for 2 years. I as well was getting my entire hair dyed for about 5 years. I am Korean but don’t have any genetic history to go off (am adopted). Am at my wits end. Supposed to go to Kaiser dermo soon. Do you think all the above contributed to rapid hair loss?

Sometimes a certain pattern emerges which could point to genetics, and other times it may be a medical issues or medications issues. There are many reports online that bupropion (Wellbutrin) causes hair loss, and I’ve previously written about Lexapro and hair loss. Many anti-depressants have hair loss risks… and depression itself could be a cause. Among the possible side effects of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, I see “loss of scalp hair” listed. So really, there’s a number of things that could be the cause, or it could be completely unrelated to medication.

Female hair loss can be difficult to pinpoint a cause, as there are many potential reasons for the hair thinning in women. Some of those reasons include anemia, thyroid disease, connective tissue disease, gynecological conditions, and emotional stress. Female Hair Loss After Knee Surgery

I am a 26 year old female, just had knee surgery last year june 2005. I have been experiencing a tremendous amount of hair loss since then. I’ve read that it could be because of the anethesia, so, my question is how long after will this continue.

One of the manifestations (or presentations) of female genetic hair loss is that some women have hair that sheds easily with stress and then comes back. You will have to wait this out.

Female Hair Loss from Graves’ Disease?

(female)
I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism) a few years ago and it has caused hair loss. I’ve been taking prenatal vitamins to help prevent the loss but it is still thinning fast. Is there any help out there for me? Desperate for Answers

Other than getting control of the Graves’ disease, I don’t know of any specific treatment for hair loss resulting from it. If you have the disease under control, the hair will likely come back! Give it a full year.

Female Hair Loss After Haircut — Should I Stop Blowdrying Every Day?

I am seriously and desperately begging for a solution to my hair problems at the moment. I am only 19.

About 7 months ago, (in Decemeber), i had a haircut where the hairdresser trimmed by hair by thinning it as she felt it was “too thick” where in reality it wasn’t even thick. She thinned it
alot and this occured in Singapore (where i am from and was visiting for three months) and in singapore even after she thinned it, it didnt look too bad. But after i came back to america…
It looks horribly thin! I never had such thin hair in my life.

It currently looks so thin and with no volume. I do blowdry my hair from the roots everyday. DO you think i should stop doing that?

Please get back to me. I am sure i can get my hair back. Please…
Thank You.

I do not know what is exactly involved with a hair dresser “thinning” your hair other than cutting your hair in layers. If this is the case, then your hair will naturally grow back. Blow drying your hair should not make your hair fall out or damage your hair unless you have it at an unusually high temperature setting. Use your judgment.

Two Female Hair Transplant Hairline Lowering Procedures shown 1 Day After Surgery (photos)

The first photo set is a woman who had her hairline lowered the day before these pictures was taken. Please note that the washing was so complete and the recipient sites so samll, that the recipient sites could barely be seen so I labeled the frontal view where a faint outline of the recipient sites show up. The hairline was extensively lowered which is the case when we often perform this hairline lowering for traction alopecia in the African American population. From the side view, there is almost nothing to see. Careful, small site recipient areas are critical to an undetectable transplant. For those who understand how difficult the African hair type is for a hair transplant (very kinky), the viewer should understand how beautiful these one day post-operative photos are.

The second woman is also one day after her surgery with a smaller distance for the hairline lowering surgery than the above patient. This was performed with an extensive restoration of her temple corners. Many women lose their temple corners as they get older and a rounded frontal hairline (which is a typical female hairline) is critical to achieving a very feminine look for many women, unlike men, on the other hand, who have high corner, V-shaped hairlines.

Female Hair Loss Specialist in France or Switzerland?

Thank you for your website, which is the best source of information I have seen. My twenty-four year old daughter has been losing her hair severely for six years and has been seeing doctors and trying various ways to stop hair loss, without success. Can you please refer her to a doctor either in France or Switzerland?

I don’t have any personal doctor recommendations in France or Switzerland, but you can find doctors in your area by using the physician search at ISHRS.org.

Be sure to research any doctor you’re interested in, but you should also know that treating female hair loss can be quite difficult. I wish your daughter the best.

Female Hair Loss from Iron Deficiency?

I am 29 years old and am losing hair. After the shower I can see lot of hair fallen around. In my diet, I dont include iron-rich food. Would it be a possible reason for hair loss? Can you suggest a good diet for preventing hair loss?

Speak to your doctor and have your iron levels measured. This is an important step if you think that you have an iron deficiency, a common occurrence in women. Historically, women needed to eat meat to replace the iron they lose from menstruation which is why iron deficiency is not uncommon in women. A good general diet with red meat may be all that you need if your iron levels are bordering on the low level, otherwise, see you doctor and get his/her recommendation. If you have hair loss, then as I’ve suggested many times in this blog, you need a good examination for miniaturization to get the best diagnosis for cause.

Female Hair Transplant and Shock Loss

I am a female planning to get a hair tranpslant and have heard that the trauma of the surgery can cause other hair to fall out. I was wondering if being on Propecia would help keep the hairs from shedding. And if so, do you need to be on Propecia for a certain number of months before it works (i.e. keeps hair from falling out)? Thanks!

Propecia (finasteride) is contraindicated in women who may become pregnant and inefficient in post-menopausal women. It probably will have no impact on pre-menopausal women. Although studies have shown significant reduction in the rate of shock loss in men who are on Propecia, it has not been studied for in women for that purpose and in theory should not work. Hair loss shock is not common in women after transplantation.

Female Hair Loss and Depression

(female) I underwent a serious depression 7 months ago due to an uncomfortable house and sharing with another family. I am taking anatax, nexito and valence tablets. but i have tremendous hair fall. can i be cured. iam worried about it.

Hair loss in women is a complex problem. Your stress may be as much of a factor as medications that you may be taking. Please see an expert in-person in the hair field for analysis of this problem.

Female Hair Loss While Trying to Conceive

I’m 32 yo woman trying to conceive. What options are open to me in stopping hair loss and stimulating regrowth? My dermatologist tells me its hereditary and I’m out of luck until birth. Any suggestions?

The only medical option is Rogaine. If it is hereditary or genetic, there is not much you can do. Any medication is dangerous for a new fetus and it is not something I would recommend until you deliver your baby (a long waiting period, I know).
