15 y/o, should I try oral minoxidil?

My dermatologist recommended that I should give oral minoxidil a try now, but I’m concerned about the generalized effect it will have on hair growth. I am generally quite happy with my low body hair level and would like to avoid getting a unibrow and super hairy arms and legs. Could some people share their experience with hypertrichosis while on oral minoxidil?

If you start on it and develop hair growth side effects that you don’t like, stop the medication, and the hair side effects will go away. Hair growth from minoxidil is heavily dependent upon taking the minoxidil and my stopping the drug, the unwanted hair will disappear.

15 and think I am balding

So, I’ve actually had really bad hair for a while now, ever since I was 14 (or at least that is when I first noticed).

I went to a very respected clinic and got a minoxidil prescription straight away due to how bad it actually is, given that I’ve had a big problem with my hair for almost 2 years now. I’ve heard a lit of people on here recommend Finasteride as well, but I doubt I can get that prescribed easily where I live (Third World Problems, I guess).

I have seen 15 year old males (rarely) develop a maturing hairline, which is not balding. Send me photos

Unique story. I would have to see photos and even better examine you. The diagnosis does not seem right to me and that is why I would need to know a lot more about you to help. Assuming that this is acceleration of male patterned balding, one option is Scalp Micropigmentation which will make your head look like a full head of hair that you shaved. This can be done and if the hair loss can be reversed, there is no downside that I know of. 15 Year Old Female with Hair Loss

Your information on female hair loss was helpful, but the information on teenage female hair loss was not as informative. I’m fifteen, and I feel I need more information. When I was a child, I had thick hair. When I was around seven, I cut it short. It was still thick then. Around seventh grade I decided to grow it back out, but still, it was thick then. When I started my freshman year in high school, though, mid-year, it began to thin. It has shown no sign of stopping, and it does worry me. My ponytail has significantly gone down in size. I can’t wear my hair down without having loose strands cover my back – which is not popular at school. Plus, I lose an extreme amount of hair each time I shower – at least fifty strands. My hair is also lackluster in shine, and crooked and crinkled when it falls out. My mother took me to a doctor, who told me it was not my thyroid level. A week or two ago, my father told me to start taking vitamins and trying to eat better – the latter of which is hard, when you go to high school. Personally, though, I’m not sure that I believe this is a diet issue. If it was, why wouldn’t it affect more teenage girls at my school? I wish to know if there are medical conditions that I might have that give a symptom of hair loss, and possibly also slight depression – I have noticed that my mood seems to be getting worse and worse. I am also on birth control, which I noticed you said might cause problems… but it shouldn’t, because I have been having hair loss much longer than I’ve been on birth control. I just want to know what I could have, and how I can get this to stop.

You need to have a good doctor do a thorough work-up on you. There is no way I can help you without getting a full opportunity to get a good history (including detailed dietary history) and a full examination of your scalp and hair for miniaturization. This will determine the health of your hair and your overall health. There are no shortcuts and no internet site that can get you what you want, because what you need is a good doctor (one who is interested in this field) first. Would my weight loss be due to a hormonal shift brought about by losing weight and thus speeding up the MPB?

I am not sure about the mechanism, but what you are suggesting is possible. Weight loss that is rapid often triggers male pattern balding but rapid weight loss itself, can cause hair loss in many people.

14 Year Old Male Losing 30-40 Hairs Per Day

Hi, Im a 14 male and losing hair.

I have been checked by a doctor (just a GP) and have been told that i have a very healthy scalp and that its not a scalp issue. I do not have hereditary hair loss in the family, my father is in his mid 50’s and still has all his hair. I have always had very ‘big’ sort of hair so its becoming increasingly noticeable. Im not losing terrible amounts of hair, only about 30-40 per day , but it is very stressfull. Especially when i have to wash my hair, and also when i wake up in the morning and have 15 + hairs on my pillow.

Is this ‘normal’ so to speak? Could it be stress related? Am i just shedding? Please help me out. Thanx.

The average person loses 100-150 hairs per day. What fall out you are noticing in the shower is probably less than what you lose during the day when you are not washing your hair. It is normal.

A 15 Year Old Female Speaks About Hair Loss, Its Causes, and What to Do About It.

Hi, I’m Chloe. I’m also 15 and I have the same thing! Everyone is commenting the same stuff but where are the answers? My hair was SUPER thick and SUPER long for ages, I’m in year 10, and since around year 8, my hair has been falling out A LOT and I don’t know why!! I have curly hair and I wash my hair only once a week. I straighten my hair after washing only once a week (I use a heat protectant spray and I let my hair air dry completely before straightening). I’ve been doing this for about 3 years but only recently has my hair been falling out so much! People have told me to not brush my hair after straightening and in the morning before school to keep the straight hair longer. This does work obviously because it lasts a week before I have to straighten it (so do this if u want to straighten less). I tie my hair into a pony tail every morning, so this could be it, but I’ve done that my whole life? I guess I don’t have the best diet because I’ve read in a lot of places that healthy diets are good for your hair. Since no one is really replying to other peoples comments with answers, I thought I’d add some things that I know.

1. Losing about 80-100 strands of hair A DAY is normal. If you don’t brush or wash say every 3 days, then think about the 3 days worth of strands that are supposed to drop and fall out; so all at once will seem daunting and really bad.
2. IT’S NOT CANCER. There may be some forms of diseases like alopecia that make you lose your hair, BUT people lose hair from cancer due to the TREATMENT of cancer, which is chemotherapy and not the cancer itself.
3. It could be hereditary — so ask your parents if they’ve ever had this or their parents. This is harder to treat because its in your genes so you can’t avoid it.
4. Have a healthier diet and eat MORE fruit and vegetables and milk. If you’re already eating enough, drink more water (I know you’ve probably heard this everywhere).
5. This is could be a result of you’re mental issues (ie – depression, anxiety, stress, lack of sleep or whatever), so I guess there is no simple answer for those causes. Try to de-stress and sleep more. (Also if you take antidepressant pills or anything those also have side affects of hair loss)
6. Try and buy some good hair vitamins or iron vitamins or any vitamins you might be lacking (Check with your doctor). These will actually help but you will only notice results 6-8 weeks after. You have to give it some time and be consistent. (Combine this with a healthy diet and it’ll be even better).
7. Hair styling -Try to cut down to no more than once a week straightening or styling with heat. USE A HEAT PROTECTANT SPRAY; it will help more and try to air dry your hair. Trust me, it’s way better. Try to find alternatives such as wearing your hair naturally without straightening it.
8. Try and do less tight hair do’s such as REALLY high and tight pony tails or braids or a bun everyday. Try to keep it in one loose braid. Also, when taking out hair ties, hold ur head so that it pulls less which might make it easier.
9. USING REALLY HOT WATER IN THE SHOWER IS LIKE A HEAT PRODUCT. Try to use cold or lukewarm water, because it makes your head really hot. Therefore, when you run your hands through your hair in the shower, more will fall out. Also, brush your hair before you wash it (like right before entering) as it makes it easier for your hands to glide through when it is wet or when you are using conditioner as it makes it easier. Don’t be rough with you hair because it is vulnerable and soft at this point.
10. Sort of connects with number 9, but don’t rub your hair a lot in the shower or when you’re towel drying it because that makes it frizzy, more damaged and easy to break.
11. DONT WASH YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY —THIS IS BAD. Washing it every 2 days is okay but it is best to do so every 3-5 days. Hair loss is occurs most often in the shower, so more showers means more loss. When you brush your hair, don’t brush it for too long or too hard, instead take little bunches and brush through the fix knots along way rather. Don’t brush youur hair too often either, give it time to be still and not disrupted.

COMBINE ALL THESE TOGETHER AND IT SHOULD HELP (I hope).

You have considerable thinning. Do you have anything medical going on, some disease, something else you inherited? What does your father and grandfathers and uncles and brothers have for hair loss? Are you taking any medications? Hove you had rapid weight loss recently? What is your Vitamin D level? Basic questions that must be answered.
