I Met with a Doctor That Immediately Told Me I Needed Three FUE Procedures for $45,000

Hi Doctor,

I am 26 and have been losing my hair at the centre, back and recently at the front.

I consulted this week with a doctor in Dubai and he classified my hair loss as pattern 4 class 5 (Hair characteristics are color:black, quality: wavy, thickness is average and density is average). He told me i would have to undergo the FUE procedure. His treatment recommendations were 2 sessions of 3000 hair follicular units at the center and back, another 3000 at the front. The total cost of it being 45,000 usd with a 3 month gap in between these surgeries.

What puzzled me the most is that he just had a look and told me that i would have to undergo this surgery. My concerns are that the price quoted is too expensive for me and i want to know if there are any good doctors out here in Dubai who could do this for a lesser cost. I would greatly appreciate your opinion on this. Thank you.

More examples of nuts

This is nuts! By just looking at you, he knows your hair density? My opinion is that no doctor can do 9000 grafts total in 3 sessions over a period of 6 months without really examining you, knowing your density, scalp laxity (for strip surgery), etc. And to add insult to potential injury, recommending it blindly every three months on the schedule outlined above is either the work of God, or possibly a doctor who has a streak of larceny (small or large) in him. Maybe I am just overreacting, knowing that I have a human type of limitations.

In other words, I’d seriously think about what this doctor is trying to sell you, and whether it is even possible for him to do what he is suggesting with any consistent quality. You wouldn’t want to pay for something and only get a small percentage of hairs actually taking and growing, leaving the other grafts too damaged to be of any good. Maybe Dubai does not have laws that protect consumers (nevermind, they do), but I would be suspicious, at the very least.

I Missed a Week of Rogaine, And Now See Significant Shedding

I am a 29 year old male who began taking Rogaine 4 years ago with some strong results. Feeling that the Rogaine was beginning to lose the battle, I eventually switched to Propecia and experienced rapid loss of my rogaine hair. Panicked, I got back on the Rogaine along with the Propecia, which worked great (even better than my first rogaine experience) for a few months. Now, out of nowhere, I’m noticing significant hair shedding, and I’m confused as to why this is happening. Any ideas? The only thing I can think of is missing a week or two of Rogaine about one month ago.

There may be factors involved other than just Rogaine or Propecia. A good medical history and physical exam including a miniaturization study would be helpful. I would suspect missing a week or two of Rogaine should not have a significant effect unless you are extremely sensitive and dependent upon the medication.

I Met an Old Man That Had Estrogen Injected to Treat Stomach Cancer — Now He’s Got Hair!

Today i met a fascinating old man in his 80’s. We got talking and he remarked that being a builder for many years was stressful and then joked it made his hair turn grey. I replied “At least youve got your hair!, i dont think im gonna even gonna get to grey” (im a NW3 and have recently made and informed decision against Propecia after 6 months of intense research talking to 3 doctors.)

He then informed me that he was previously bald with a ring around his head,( sounds like a NW7). He got stomach cancer a few years ago and was forced to take estrogen. It sounded like it was a massive amount of estrogen and they put it straight into his stomach, he also said its about 1300 a pop and that he had it three times. The Doctor warned him that this treatment would either grow hair on his head or give him breasts.

His hair, now white was probably a Norwood 2. Just wondering if you could share some light on this fascinating story.

We know that estrogen protects women against hair loss and when they go through menopause, they lose their estrogen and many times their hair. I have been aware that estrogen may help in hair loss, but at what cost for the men (breast, libido, and feminization issues)?

I Mapped My Scalp for Miniaturization and Found Finer Hairs That Could Suggest MPB

Hello Doc,
I mapped my scalp for miniaturization (since no central European doctor or rocket scientist does). What I found was there was none in the front, crown, mid- anterior or top of my head, only as expected in my hairline corners. However, when I went further back at the temples, a narrow space between the sides and top of the head, going about half an inch to one inch further back than a Norwood 2 had also more fine hairs. (no recession up to there yet) This suggests Mpb, right?

Still I’m glad that after one year of hairloss it doesn’t look like I’m going bald soon, although at age 22 and a NW6 maternal grandpa one can not be sure (still all other male relatives are Class 1 or 2). I’m well aware that a self examination does not fully replace a medical one, so perhaps one day I’ll get it confirmed

After all, I wanted to thank you for your site, delivering infos, without which I would still not know about scalp mapping, mature hairlines or a master plan.

Thank you for the comments. While it may not replace a good medical examination, it is good to know that some readers can be empowered to take a proactive and objectively see the degree of thinning / miniaturization.

What you saw could suggest early MPB, but I couldn’t say for sure without seeing what you’re talking about.

I Need to Look Good For a Wedding in 6 Weeks

I know you’ve mentioned several times that it’s redundant using Regaine while on Propecia, but i’ve only started taking Propecia and I need to look good for a wedding in 6 weeks, while Propecia won’t kick in for at least 3+ months. Would it be worth taking both until the wedding then go back to just using Propecia?

Thanks

You can not dictate timelines to your hair. Six weeks may be far too short a period to expect changes. Think more like many months and even up to a year or two to get the benefits of Propecia or minoxidil.

I Overplucked My Eyebrows and Had Them Tattooed Back On, But Want a More Natural Look

I overplucked, then had to have them tattooed because they wouldn’t grow back. With the tattoing, of course, they didn’t regrow either. It’s been years and I would like a natural looking eyebrow, one that doesn’t fade and frames my face. What would you recommend?

Hair transplants into the eyebrows is the answer and it works wonderfully. Here’s an example of a female patient that had eyebrow restoration — Patient BG. For more info about eyebrow transplants, here’s an article from a few months back that I was quoted in — Women who pluck too much turn to eyebrow transplants.

I need another hair transplant but look at my donor area

I want to keep my hair short right now from side and back but the scarring from the first fue is still noticeable. Do you think scalp micropigmentation will help with this? Second FUE would make this even worse potentially. This is what it looks like right now. First FUE was years ago.

It looks like you are over-harvested. The instrument the doctor used appears to have been relatively larger than what I would expect. Scalp micropigmentation will hide the abnormal look in the back of your head. Send me photos of your entire head to info@newhair.com so I can give you a sort-of a Master Plan for what to do going forward. It would have been good to have a metric for the original donor area density.

I Only Get Peach Fuzz in the Crown from Minoxidil

Hi, am hoping you can provide a clinical opinion on my experience and usage with 5% minoxidil.

I am a 52 years old male. My main area of thinning/hair loss has always been my crown area (about a 2-3 inch diameter). My crown started thinning noticeably in my mid 40’s. I have been using 5% minoxidil for almost 4 years now. At first it seemed to definitely halt further hair loss in the crown, but it has never filled in that area. I only get peach fuzz type hairs that never fully develop into mature hairs. Am I wasting my time continuing to use minoxidil on my crown? I appreciate any response on this, thanking you in advance.

Even though some people get good hair growth from minoxidil (Rogaine), the majority of people are like you, getting peach fuzz rather than really good, strong hair. Whether the limited results you’re seeing is wasting your time is up to you to decide.

I picked at my grafts (6 days) and a few came out (Photo)

We performed a study where we actually picked out the grafts on days 1-15 in over a few dozen patients. The grafts that were removed were sent to pathology. What we learned is that picking the crust (scabs) while they are still there, will pull out the grafts up to 12 days or so. Once the crusts are gone, the living part of the grafts do not come out. The pictures show you still have crusts and are at risk of removing the grafts if you continue to pick on them.
