Can I use Body hair instead of my scalp hair for a hair transplant?

Body hair can be used but each body hair part has different characteristics that you must be aware of, particularly growth cycle. Beard hair is similar to scalp hair in its growth cycle with a long Anagen phase and a short telogen phase. It is, however, more curly and course possibly than your scalp hair. Arm, chest, and leg hair has a very short Anagen phase and a long telogen phase which means that much of the hair will not grow longer than 6-8 months and ‘sleep’ for 5-6 months so its value will be less in terms of length. These hairs are also finer and often do not have the appearance of normal scalp hair when they grow out. ?Pubic hair of course looks like pubic hair but works well as does underarm hair with its sweat glands.

Can I Use Rogaine Liquid at Night and Foam in the Morning?

Hi!

I am 25 and have been using rogaine since i was 20…the foam worked great having used it twice a day however it seemed to be ” lacking” recently and with instructions from Dr.Bernstein in NYC switched to the liquid only at night time. Few questions:

1. Can i use foam in the AM and liquid at night?

2. Does PG help with hair growth? I just went through a new shedding stage and am assuming that was weak hair falling out.

3. Any vitamins to help with hair loss? I take the standard multi but wonder if there is anything more or shampoos to block DHT? Ketoconazole?

Thank you

Yes, you can use the foam and liquid on the same day.

As for “PG”, I assume you mean propylene glycol. It is included in minoxidil to help the medication penetrate the scalp (see here).

Some people use ketoconazole with hopes of treatment help in the battle against hair loss, but I’ve got mixed feelings about it (see here).

Can I wear a hair piece for 6-8 weeks?

If you leave a hair piece on your head for 6 weeks, the hair will grow under it and the skin sweat will start to stink. These systems must be washed along with your scalp on a regular basis.

Can Loneliness And Social Isolation Shorten A Person’s Life? Can Hair Transplantation Address This Problem In Some Men?

A recent paper published in “Perspectives on Psychological Science” indicates that people who spend less time alone and are less socially isolated might live longer and this has been found to hold in all ages of people. The study was done at Brigham Young University analyzing 3 million participants from a variety of health groups. The metrics included socioeconomic status, age, gender, and pre-existing health conditions and the study suggests that a lack of social connections presents an added risk. People with relationships had showed greater health.

Specifically, “the mortality risk is increased by 29 per cent for socially isolated individuals and by 26 per cent for lonely people. Individuals living alone have a 32 per cent higher risk of dying prematurely.” When one adds excessive drinking and smoking to the mix, the numbers may be worse. “In essence, the study is saying the more positive psychology we have in our world, the better we’re able to function not just emotionally but physically,” said Tim Smith, co-author of the study.

We see in our hair restoration practice, men who lose their mates. Many feel lost and some seek hair transplants to get their hair back with an anticipation of dating again, We see this with great frequency as men want to look more desirable, and appear certainly younger. Adding hair to a balding head, makes this happen. I distinctly remember three patients; one a 68 years old, who sat with his dying wife for 4 years as she eventually succumbed to breast cancer. He rarely socialized while she was dying. When she died he visited me and told me how difficult life was during those 4 years, but he loved her a great deal and appreciated her though the end. He was missing the hair in the front of his head and got, in just one session, terrific glistening silver hair. Once the hair grew out, he went on a cruise by himself and met a beautiful 29 year old Japanese woman and by the end of the cruise they decided to marry. He came to visit me two years later to introduce her to me. His smile was radiant. He told me that being alone, just was not for him. The second man was 86, and he lost his wife and thought he looked too old, so he got a hair transplant with great results in just one session. It did not take him long to find a new wife. At 86, there were more single, available women than men by a long shot so the hunt did not take long. I think that the women hunted him out. The third patient was 55, his wife left him and he refused to date until he got a hair transplant. After just one session, he came back and told me that dating was great. He met many women on the internet and loved the attention he was getting, but he did not marry again, at least not in the first year that his hair grew out. Maybe he could not find ‘Miss Right’.

In conclusion: Hair makes a man feel more confident, younger and more able to tackle the world of ‘available women’. It also has a major impact on careers. Many Hollywood celebrities that I worked on before they became famous, developed the confidence in themselves that boosted their careers. They often felt my contribution to their ‘look’ was one of the main reasons they made it professionally. From the article referenced above, it appears that maybe hair transplanted patients will live longer, who knows. Life’s value, a man’s confidence and maybe life’s length are related.

Can We Identify All of the Balding Genes to Fix Them as Suggested by John Oliver on His TV Show? (from Reddit)

No, we have not identified all of the genes for balding. However, we are getting closer to finding the proteins that stimulate the anagen phase of the hairs that are sleeping in your balding area.

If we can identify all the bald genes, could we eradicate MPB? from tressless

Can I Will Myself into Balding?

I have recently gone under a great deal of hair loss. I had a very thick head of hair and thought i would never go bald. My Father and his brother went bald in the mid to late 20’s. My father’s father is almost 90 and still has a head of hair. My mothers side of the family had a good head of hair. My brother had thin hair his whole life, but at this rate i feel i will be bald before him. I noticed that i had a receeding hairline, and thought i was going bald. For two months I thought i was going bald and almost convinced myself of it. Is it possible to make yourself go bald? I am taking propecia now and am curious if it is at all possible to regrow my hair and if this hair loss was just a phase.

Seriously… you are asking me if you can “will” yourself to go bald? Do you believe in the paranormal or psychic powers? I personally do not. No, you can’t make yourself go bald by just thinking you’re going to go bald.

If you are male and losing hair, it is most likely due to male pattern (genetic) balding and to confirm this, you should get your hair mapped out for miniaturization. This mapping will tell you if you have genetic balding. Before taking Propecia (a prescription medication) you should see a qualified doctor who can correctly diagnose you with male pattern baldness. Otherwise you really don’t know what you are treating. As such, I cannot tell you if you will regrow your hair since we haven’t even established a firm fact that you are balding!

Can It Take 6 Years Before Propecia Side Effects Show Up?

I started using Propecia when I was 27 and I am now 43. I didn’t really notice any side effects until I was 33. I started having erectile difficulties then which are offset by daily Cialis use. The difficulties were loss of erection during sex and reduced ejaculate. Is it possible that it took 6 years for the sexual side effects to kick in from Propecia?

The drug has definitely helped me prevent hair loss and I would like to keep taking it but I have also dealt with some anxiety and depression issues over the last few years.

The basic question is: Can it take that long( 6 years) for side effects to show up?

You need to see a medical doctor and have a physical exam. Many men in their 40s or even 30s have erectile dysfunction (ED) without ever taking Propecia. It’s just that they do not openly talk about it. You might also have undiagnosed medical conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, etc) that can cause ED. Or you can be taking other medications (blood pressure, anti-depressants) or drugs (marijuana, cocaine, etc) that may be causing the ED. Maybe you smoke cigarettes or you drink alcohol. I don’t know enough about you and since you’re not my patient, I’m just taking wild guesses here as to possible causes.

I suppose it is possible that after 6 years in a healthy man with none of the things discussed above, some sexual side effects may develop over time. That being said, it is more likely that if you were going to have side effects from Propecia, they would appear within the first few weeks.

I’ve written about this before here.

Can Long Term Use of Clobetasol Propionate Foam Cause Hair Loss?

I have been using Clobetasol Propionate foam on my Scalp for Seborrhea for about 10+ years until recently. I liberally applied it to most of the center part of my head. I just recently realized that could be causing my hair to be very thin, breaking off very short. I stopped using this and just use T Gel Shampoo 2 times a week, and the itch seems to be controlled. My question is: will my hair thicken up if I continue to not use the Clobetasol, or did it cause permanent damage? I can tell by the color of my roots that my hair is growing. I should have read the directions and used it very sparingly, but the doctor’s assistant said she uses it and just applies the foam to scalp and rubs it in. So, I didn’t research any further. Will I have any side effects other than thin, damaged hair?

The chronic long-term use of this steroidal medication (Clobetasol Propionate foam) can cause your presenting symptoms.
