I’m 20 and My Forehead is Growing

Dear Dr. Rassman,
hair loss started when i was 15, now that am 20 it got worse, and my forhead got bigger due to hair loss, what are the possible causes and treatments for that?

This is most likely genetic male pattern balding. You need to getyour hair mapped out for miniaturization to make the diagnosis and then possibly consider medications like Propecia.

I’m 19, and My Hair Is Thinning like My Sister and Mother. I Am in a Panic. (Photo)

I start college next fall, so stress is very evident in my life. Other factors: I take birth control pills, there might be some underlying black mold issues in my new apartment, and I used to take antidepressants.

You have many reasons to have hair loss. Start with your family history since it may be genetic. See a good doctor to get a proper diagnosis. The various factors you mentioned all contribute to hair loss, and for women, it is even more complex. Get out of that apartment and find another one since black mold is deadly for hair and is not good for your health.

I’m 19 and Male and the Doctor Told Me That My Hair Loss Was from Telogen Effluvium. What Can I Do About It?

Young men rarely get Telogen effluviums. When it does happen, it goes away by itself. If it does not go away, it is likely early genetic hair loss. If it is early genetic balding, it will not reverse. You might want to see a doctor and get a HAIRCHECK test for a good baseline measurement to compare with future measurements so that you know what is happening with your balding pattern.

I’m 19 and I Want to Start Taking Finasteride

I also have a history of having Gynecomastia when I was 15, and it was surgically removed. Will my risk be high if I start Finasteride?

Before staring the drug Finasteride, I always perform a HAIRCHECK, which accurately shows the amount of hair lost at the time the drug is started. If no hair is lost, I advise against the drug.

However, if hair is lost, then I remeasure the patient one year later to see what happened to the balding process and if the drug (1) was started, and (2) the value and the benefit, if any, of taking the drug. For young men with a history of Gynecomastia, the drug Finasteride is not any more of a risk in your situation compared to other men of your age.

I’m 20, female and have significant hair loss

First, check with your mom and the other females in the family (grandmothers, aunts, sisters, etc..) and see if they had the same situation in their 20s as this condition is often inherited on the female side of the family. You need to get a good doctor and a good examination of your hair with a trichoscope which shows classic genetic patterns in the area around the sides and back of your head.

Some common blood tests for female hair loss:

  • Sex Hormone tests
  • SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin) used to test status of male hormones
  • Estradiol is a sex hormone
  • FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) *not hair follicle but follicle in the ovary*
  • LH (Luteinizing Hormone) is a sex hormone
  • Free Testosterone
  • Total Testosterone
  • ANA (Anti Nuclear Antibody) used to test for Lupus or other autoimmune diseases
  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) used to test for hyper or hypo-thyroid disease
  • Test Iron status
  • TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity)
  • Ferritin
  • Iron

As these test may point to a cause other than genetic

I’m 21 and I want to do an FUE. Is it ok?

So i’ve been battling hair loss since i was 16-17 or younger(had a high hairline to start with so didn’t actually know) i’ve been on propecia and mnoxidio for around 3 years now and i have sabora too which i started treating with nizoral recently. I had a problem down there since i was younger cause of my abnormally large member and since fin i have weaker erections so i decided to stop doing fin and change that with prp treatments I’m seeing little hairs all over the hairline but no regrowth so i want to get a fue transplant Btw im nw2-3 cant decide but the men on both my parents side are bald And the hair loss i have is mainly in the hairline area Is there anyone who can advice me what to do? Its really taking a toll on me and my parents will pay for the treatment so i wont have a financial problem Thanks alot in advance your balding little brother.

Doing a hair transplant at your age would be a big mistake because you don’t know what is going to happen to you in a year or so. If you had a hair transplant now, in a year you would likely need another. Then when you did the second one, in a year you might need a third transplant. Do you get it, it never ends until your final hair loss pattern can be documented by a good doctor. Usually I can do it when a man reaches 25-26 years of age and the consider a hair transplant if indicated. An FUE is a hair transplant and I am the first to perform FUE and wrote the original articles on it so I know what I am talking about.

I’m 21 and Balding — What To Do?

Dear Sir:

So please tell me what can i do , Do you prefer surgery for me , or Drugs ( if yes mention one ) i used to use REGAIN EXTRA STRAINGTH . but i stopped. because i wanted a faster solution . please reply as soon as possible . thanks so much

It is very difficult to evaluate hair loss without at least pictures, and an in personal consultation is better. I don’t recommend hair transplantation as the first option to solve your balding problem. First, you would have to be evaluated to map out your hair loss as it progresses by determining the degree of miniaturization that is in every part of your scalp. Then, providing you are a male, I would likely have you on Propecia for a year or so, then reassess the miniaturization and your observable pattern of hair loss (if any) or reversal of hair loss. From there, transplantation might be right for you, but only an in-person evaluation will be able to determine this. If you’d like to email photos to me, please use the email address on the contact page.

I’m 21 and Want a Hair Transplant Because You Can See Through Most of My Hair (Front, Top and Back of My Head, in Other Words from All Over)

I’m a junior in College and my roommates are telling me that I am losing my hair. I never noticed it before but I now realize that I can see through my entire scalp. It looks like my hair is thinning everywhere. I am thinking seriously about getting a hair transplant.

You need to be evaluated by an expert who specializes in hair transplantation, and is honest and doesn’t do it just for the money he gets from you. A good opinion is critical. I met with a man from Reddit last week who thought he was balding and had seen another doctor who offered him a hair transplant. When I examined him with the HAIR CHECK instrument and a trichoscope, it was clear he was not balding (and he did not have DUPA), so what he was seeing was very fine hair with very poor density (which I measured as very low). He was probably born that way and just noticed it recently from comments by friends. If he got a hair transplant with his poor hair and poor density, he would end up deformed for life because he had terrible hair and just would never make a good hair transplant candidate. If he felt strongly about his appearance, a wig might work for him or he should just accept what he has. We could offer him Scalp Micropigmentation which would make his hair appear much thicker. It would make his white scalp less prominent which is a much better option than a wig because it is full freedom to be himself.
