I’m Blonde and Losing My Hair. Right Now It Doesn’t Look Too Bad but I Want to Go on Finasteride and Want to Know If I Can Take a Lower Dose.

Blondes can lose 80% of their hair without detecting it readily. The best way to determine how much hair you are actually losing is to get a HAIRCHECK test and then you will know exactly where you stand. You may be losing more hair than you are seeing. For finasteride, only 2-4% of people get sexual side effects, so starting at the regular dose is okay. If you only take half the dose, it will be 80% as effective with some people reporting less sexual side effects.

I’m Confused About the Shedding from Hair Drugs

i’ve heard people complain about “shedding” with Rogaine, Propecia, and Avodart (more with Avodart and Rogaine). I can see from what you have posted before how Rogaine may cause “shedding” (or loss of hair) as it speeds up the hair cycle, and may cause hairs to fall out to be replaced by new, by stimulating the hair cylce process. But how would Propecia or Avodart cause shedding? It seems like it would cause to stop, since only a hormonal inhibitor, not some hair regrowth stimulant. Are these people complaining of “shedding” really just experiencing hair loss from genetic hormonal factor (androgenic alopecia), and it just has not been long enough for their Propecia (6 months to 1 1/2 years) to really kick-in and cause regrowth?

Propecia (finasteride) and Avodart (dutasteride) may cause hair shedding in some, probably through the same mechanism. The exact mechanism for this hair shedding is not known, but the shedding induced by all different medications generally fall into the same pattern. As we’ve said before, this hair shedding is usually temporary and reversible within a few months and not as common as the readers of websites may think. In my practice, I rarely hear this complaint.

I’m Confused on What Are M and v Shape Hairlines, Help Me Understand!

The V-shaped hairline is the typical mature male hairline. I have written about hairlines here:https://newhair.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/phenotype-article-published.pdf which covers the different hairline shapes and how you get them as you get older. This link shows examples of both types of hairlines with some good photos: https://baldingblog.com/juvenile-vs-mature-hairline-am-i-going-bald-with-photos/

I’m Concerned That Stopping Propecia Will Give Me Post-Finasteride Syndrome

I’m 24, been on Propecia for a year, and really haven’t seen much of a change. I’m balding from my hairline but I feel (but can’t really see) thinning in the big horseshoe, Norwood 6 or so.

Over the last year, my hairline’s continued receding at about the same level it was before, and recession is definitely much more noticeable than it was before I started. I also haven’t seen any side effects except maybe anxiety or depression, but that could also be related to external factors since I’ve had experience with both of those in the past.

Since it’s been a year, and I don’t think it’s worth spending $1000 a year on my salary for what seems to be negligible results, I was thinking about stopping. But with all the “panic” around Propecia over the last couple of weeks, I’m concerned that stopping might bring on new side effects, even though I haven’t had any on the drug. What are your thoughts on that whole alleged “Post-Finasteride Syndrome” and, as someone who has been very minimally effected by the drug, do you think it’s worth me even being concerned about? I know the internet’s full of hyperbole and all, but I just want to make sure I cover all of my bases before I stop taking the drug.

It feels like I’ve written about this dozens of times on the blog. Side effect incidence is rare and the recent hysteria is from a published article about 54 men that were interviewed (men that joined the study after being recruited from a forum created to complain about the drug). I think the power of suggestion is likely at play.

If you’re concerned about the price — you can ask your doctor for a prescription to the 5mg pill (a generic is available which makes it incredibly cheap), and then just cut the pill. That saves significant costs.

I’m Facing Excess Hair Loss at the Age of 20 Accompanied by Dry Scalp, What Could Be the Reason?

The first step in evaluating hair loss in women, after a detailed history and physical exam, is to rule out any underlying medical causes of hair loss that can be treated. If clinically appropriate, the following disease processes should be considered: anemia, thyroid disease, connective tissue disease, gynecological conditions and emotional stress. Furthermore, over 50% of women going through a change of life or hormone fluctuations (menopause) experience significant hair loss. It is also important to review the use of medications that may cause hair loss, such as (but not limited to) oral contraceptives, beta-blockers, Vitamin A, thyroid drugs, coumadin, and prednisone.

The following laboratory tests have been recommended to rule out the aforementioned medical conditions:

  • Sex Hormone tests
  • SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin) used to test status of male hormones
  • Estradiol is a sex hormone
  • FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) *not hair follicle but follicle in the ovary*
  • LH (Luteinizing Hormone) is a sex hormone
  • Free Testosterone
  • Total Testosterone
  • ANA (Anti Nuclear Antibody) used to test for Lupus or other autoimmune diseases
  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) used to test for hyper or hypo-thyroid disease
  • Test Iron status
  • TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity)
  • Ferritin
  • Iron

I’m developing a Class 7 pattern

I’m pretty close if not completely norwood 7+. I realize this severely limits what I can expect from a hair transplant. I am currently 40 years old, and have been balding since 20. So I’ve been on fin and minox on and off throughout the years. I know there’s only so much you can say if you don’t see me personally, but I just wanted your opinion as an expert. At a norwood 7, would it be possible to have graft or FUE done to the “top” of my head so that I have coverage on the top enough to create an “undercut” look. Currently, I shave my head completely. If I had the transplant done, I would still plan on shaving the sides and “under” the top. I realize this would possibly make scarring visible and obvious, which I understand is a very important thing to consider. I would think micropigmentation would help with this, right?

I was just curious if you had ever performed this kind of look, and whether or not you thought it would be viable with such advanced hair loss.

I have performed hair transplants on hundreds of Class 7 pattern patients. Some have had a very high number of transplantable grafts and some have not. See: https://baldingblog.com/question-about-class-6-pattern-of-balding/. If you want to consult with me, write to me at williamrassman33@gmail.com. To evaluate you correctly, I need to see some photos to show your balding, and one of them should be a frontal view with your hair pulled back and your eyebrows lifted high so that the creases on the forehead show up. This will show me anatomical landmarks to measure where your hairline belongs and more about the shape. Tell me what you don’t like about your hairline and overall hair situation. Please include your phone number and the best times to reach you.

I’m Female, My Doctor Has Me on Propecia for Hair Loss, But I Want Avodart

my dermatologist has me on propecia for hairloss. i am 55, female and have read that avodart may give better results. my dr. says she has not heard of avodart. i didn’t mention this was not the intended use of the drug. anyway, i think i may need to find another doctor. do you have anyone in orange county you might recommend?

thanks.

Go seek out another dermatologist. I personally would not treat a 55 year old female with Avodart (dutasteride) unless they had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or a similar problem.

I’m Glad I Stayed on Propecia, But I Almost Gave Up on It

I just want to say that im approaching 18 months on propecia and I just recently got a hair cut and took some new pictures, and compared to to the old ones, my hair def looks better. it looks thicker and seems to be getting better. I just want to say thanks for all the info you gave me, and give me the advice to stick with it and not discontinue it (which at one point I wanted to give up). Thanks doc, really appreciate all the help.

doctor can some stress cause hair loss? I experienced a stressful week a couple of weeks ago (not an extreme, but just some worrying and anxiety), and kinda worried if it can make hair loss worse, or not. I mean I have experience worse stress before and my hair stayed the same, just want to know want kind of stress really causes hair loss

thanks again doctor. you are the best

I’m glad to hear you’re seeing positive results from the Propecia. Some men want to give up after a few months because it’s not an instant result, but you stuck with it and it paid off for you. And since you’re an actual patient of mine, you should make plans to come see me for a re-evaluation.

Some stress can cause temporary hair loss, but do not judge it on a week or a month basis. I wouldn’t be too concerned about a stressful week. That happens to most of us from time to time.
