In the News – Scottish Brothers Have Hair Transplants on The Same Day

Snippet from the article:

BALDING brothers Barry and Brian Cowan have gone back to their roots to save their careers. Barry — lead guitarist with Scots indie band Vigo Thieves — and male model Brian were horrified when they began losing their hair. So the boys, from Wishaw in Lanarkshire, decided to do something about it. They discovered a revolutionary new transplant treatment on offer for the first time in Scotland.

Yesterday, at The Glasgow Clinic in the city centre, the brothers had around 5,000 hair follicles transplanted from thicker hair at the back of their heads to the thinning top and crown.

I guess this was news because it hadn’t happened in Scotland before, but we have had many dual procedures where brothers go at a transplant on the same day, even some sets of twins. We have had father and son transplants on the same day as well. This produces great spirit and brings our staff together in great joy.

In the News – Retired Teacher Sues to Make Baldness a Disability

Snippet from the article:

Mr Campbell, 61, a former teacher at Denny High School, Stirlingshire, endured repeated taunts from pupils over his hair loss. Such was the extent of the harassment that it affected his day-to-day activities, he said.

The now retired teacher took his local authority employer to a tribunal, claiming he was a victim of disability discrimination because he was bald.

But yesterday his case was thrown out, after the tribunal judge ruled that baldness was not a disability.

In the News – Scalp Cooler for Chemo Treatments

Snippet from the article:

The machines work by lowering the temperature of the head and scalp by a few degrees before, during and after chemotherapy.

This reduction in scalp temperature restricts the amount of blood reaching the hair follicles protecting them from the effects of chemotherapy drugs in the bloodstream, meaning that hair loss is not inevitable.

Although the scalp coolers have been around for some years some hospitals still do not have them, or if they do, they do not have enough of them to save everyone’s hair.

The article also mentions that this isn’t an appropriate treatment for all cancers or chemotherapy drugs, but I still would worry a bit about lowering body temperature due to the scalp’s very high blood supply. Just a thought though, as this is an interesting piece.

In the News – Sexual Assault is Not a Natural Hair Loss Treatment

Snippet from the article:

An “alternative doctor” who sexually assaulted a female reporter seeking a cure for hair loss has been jailed for nine months.

Chan Tung-choi, a practitioner of natural therapy, yelled he was innocent as he was led away from Eastern Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Chan, 68, who denied four counts of indecent assault, was found guilty by Magistrate So Wai-tak. He said he would appeal. Earlier, the court heard how Chan fondled the private parts and breasts of a 28-year-old online journalist, who cannot be named, between late 2005 and October 2006 at his Sheung Wan clinic.

He told her such actions would help make her hair grow.

In the News – Stem Cells Created from Adults

Snippet from the article:

Scientists have moved a step closer to the goal of creating stem cells perfectly matched to a patient’s DNA in order to treat diseases, they announced on Thursday, creating patient-specific cell lines out of the skin cells of two adult men.

The advance, described online in the journal Cell Stem Cell, is the first time researchers have achieved “therapeutic cloning” of adults. Technically called somatic-cell nuclear transfer, therapeutic cloning means producing embryonic cells genetically identical to a donor, usually for the purpose of using those cells to treat disease.

But nuclear transfer is also the first step in reproductive cloning, or producing a genetic duplicate of someone – a technique that has sparked controversy since the 1997 announcement that it was used to create Dolly, the clone of a ewe. In 2005, the United Nations called on countries to ban it, and the United States prohibits the use of federal funds for either reproductive or therapeutic cloning.

Lady Gaga. Well, there’s a name I didn’t think I’d ever write about on this site. It isn’t a surprise to me that she’s losing hair from chemical damage caused by bleaching her hair, but it generally isn’t talked about by celebrities in the press.

In the News – Smoking May Accelerate Hair Loss

We have known for some time that smoking reduces skin circulation, particularly in the scalp. These articles do connect the dots between smoking and acceleration of hair loss in those individuals who are genetically prone to it. Of interest, there is a clear suggestion in these reference articles to the original research, which show that Asian men have a lesser incidence of balding.
