Interesting and unusual persistent frontal juvenile hairline (photo)

This is a highly unusual persistent frontal juvenile hairline with balding behind it on the left and a patient with parts of his juvenile hairline on the left. The surgeon who saw this patient suggested that his lower remnant hairline be removed with a laser and the new hairline be placed where he drew it on the man’s head on the left.

The patient on the right, had his hairline created about 1 inch above the remnants of his juvenile hairline. I do not agree with this strategy but you can see the grafts. When these grafts grow out, he will have the remnants of his juvenile hairline evident. I would transplant the entire frontal hairline, retaining the juvenile hairline within my hairline design and restore his juvenile hairline.

These men had a look which has always been with a low hairline and they would most likely want to retain their original look. Doing laser removal will not work 100% so these man will end up having a half dozen laser procedures over a year to get out maybe 95% of these frontal hairs removed and never get where they want or need to be so that would not a good decision.

Why Would a Balding 19 Year Old Want Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) And Not Want Propecia

This young man is enrolled in University of California in San Diego and has a career in Physics in front of him. He is very bright and he is balding already, now only in the crown, but he has early thinning evident in the frontal corners which may follow his father’s pattern of a Class 6 balding pattern.

He said, point blank, that he did not want to go through the four hair transplant surgeries that I did on his dad, even though, he admitted, his dad looked ‘good’. He was dead set against Propecia, for sound, rational reasons and understood clearly, that the decision not to take this drug would inevitably lead him to continue with the progressive balding process he is presently experiencing. He came to this decision having thought hard and long, and after doing considerable research on the subject. “My body has its own clock and my unique genetics and I have known this since I turned puberty. I fully realize that I am ready to go bald, if I must, but I don’t want to keep worrying about it, day in and day out. Now, I live under a base ball hat and I want to go out not worrying about my hair and my visible aging, balding head”

So he came to see me because he decided to have Scalp Micropigmentation. We discussed his changing natural hairline that may disappear with time, and he fully realize that the hairline that we will create with SMP will be permanent and that he was willing to accept the normal recession and adjust his styling, possibly locking in a short hair style (almost shaved look) for the rest of his life. He wanted for us to create a natural shape and configuration of a youthful hairline that he saw on our website on some of our hair transplant patients and on some men who shaved their head and never went bald. I told him that for a while, he will be able to let his hair grow out, until the frontal hairline recedes. He didn’t mind and liked the idea that once he had the SMP done, he would be finished with his hair problem and go on with his career as a physicist and focus on the rest of his life.

Interesting Double Whirl in the Crown of the Head

These are very rare and require that the surgeon, when they are present and the area is going to be transplanted, reproduce this double whirl. Most people have a single whirl either on the left or right side of the crown. Take a look at yours.

Interesting Topical Medication For Hair Loss

The drug melatonin, a potent antioxidant and growth modulator, was identified as a promising candidate for the topical treatment of hair loss. The study was conducted in 2003 at the Forenap Centre Hospitalier in Rouffach, France. The drug was found to be well tolerated. Approximately 80% of people found that it reduced hair loss during the short 90 day trial. The study concluded that there was a positive effect of melatonin on hair growth in patients with AGA. The authors recommended more studies have to be done to confirm the benefits for both short and long term hair loss treatment. The drug melatonin may behave similar to a topical drug which was marketed by a French pharmaceutical company which was known as a “morning after” abortion pill (as it was/is known and marketed some 20 years ago) and no longer on the market. A topical form of melatonin is commercialized in Spain (a topical solution called Lambdapil solution) but according to a colleague there, it is weak and no better than minoxidil.

Interesting use of peppermint oil compared to minoxidil to grow hair (from Reddit)

This is an interesting study; however, although I don’t want to be a snob, a proper study should be done from a recognized academic institution that would lend credibility to this study. The link does not show this, but some of the science is there. Using peppermint oil certainly will not hurt you if you try it. I would love to hear some people’s response to their use of it reported back here.

This study proves that peppermint oil is more effective than minoxidil, can you guys tell me why it isn’t? from tressless
