Is 20 to early to start finasteride?

I went to the dermatologist recently because I’m really worried that I’m starting to lose my hair. I haven’t really noticed any shedding or anything but the hair above my temples seems to be very slightly higher than I remember . Basically the doctor said she couldn’t tell if my hairline was receding or not. When I asked about Finasteride she said that even if i was receding she wouldn’t prescribe me it because my age and some recent studies that showed sexual side effects later in life. I’m honestly sick of worrying about my hair and considering taking it as a preventive measure (both sides of the family have male pattern baldness even though it didn’t affect them until later in there lives 30+) From everything I’d read and seen it seemed like the side effects for this drug are super over blown but after hearing her say that its making me second guess my conclusion. I’m pretty sure If I went to a different doctor I could get them to give me a prescription but I figured I would put something on here first. If I am losing my hair I would like to do something about it before it gets any worse and sitting here going wondering isn’t making me feel any better.

The drug is more effective in most 20 year olds than 30 year old men as a general rule. A lot of that depends upon the hair loss pattern you have inherited. For example, if your father’s pattern is a Class 7 pattern and you are taking after your father from talking with him, I have found that finasteride might slow down the progression to a Class 7 pattern but not stop it; however, if the pattern you are inheriting was not an advanced pattern, then this drug can often slow, stop and possibly reverse it the younger you are. Now with that said, in your situation I would perform a HAIRCHECK test (https://baldingblog.com/haircheck-test-how-it-is-done-video/) to determine if you are in-fact balding before committing a lifetime of taking the drug finasteride because maybe you are not balding. Yearly HAIRCHECK tests will tell you that story and changes in your hairline beyond a mature hairline, could also indicate some genetic factors in you as well. With this approach, you will have developed a Master Plan for your future and with that plan you can stop worrying.

Is a Hair transplant at 20 ok?

Is it possible to get a transplant at around 20 years old if you have been on Fin for a couple of years, and had been able to stop further hair loss? Since Fin stops hair loss, and transplants are recommended for people 25+ in order to see what your balding pattern will be, why would you need to wait that much longer?

Never a good idea. Take a look at this: https://baldingblog.com/need-master-plan-think-hair-transplants-photos/ You must have a Personalized Master Plan in the case that your balding pattern follows this man. If he started at 20, he might have used up all of his donor hair before the balding became complete. That means that he might not look right, hair wise. Good planning starts when you begin the hair transplant process and you MUST know your lifetime donor supply.

Is Aderans Completing Phase 2?

hello dr
i think Aderans is very close to complete phase 2 and begin with the last phase which is phase 3

this is the link: Aderans Research Reaches Major Milestone in Phase 2 Clinical Study Enrollment

From the release — “Aderans Research reached a major milestone this month with the completion of enrollment in one of its key Phase 2 clinical protocols.

I don’t know that they’re all that close to completing phase 2, based on the info in this press release. It says they’ve completed enrolling participants for phase 2, which sounds like it could still be pretty early in the phase.

Is Avodart Off-Limits for Treating Hair Loss Until it is FDA Approved for Such Use?

Hi Dr. Rassman,

I’ve been on Propecia and Rogaine for 3 years and have been delighted with the results……up until now. Propecia and Rogaine thickened the hair all over my scalp and slowed the regression of my hairline. Unfortunately, it’s becoming apparent that my crown is now thinning, an area that had been strong prior to treatment.

I’m 28 now, and, if possible, I’d like to keep my crown hair for another few years, what are my options?

1) Would upping propecia dosage ever be advisable for a 28 year old?
2) Should I consider Avodart off-limits until it is FDA approved for hair loss?
3) What would you do if you were in this situation?

I’ve a check up with the doctor (who I’m very happy with) that originally prescribed the treatment in a couple of weeks, and will pose the same questions to him. However, your opinion is really important to me, and will help inform any decisions I may have to make. All the best

Upping the dose of Propecia (finasteride) usually does not work in your situation. Rogaine (minoxidil) is fairly effective in the crown and worth trying. Avodart (dutasteride) is an option and some doctors will prescribe it, however, the long term risks of sterility are there (probably remote), and the side effects are more frequent than on Propecia.

Try the minoxidil and give it at least 6 months. Then reassess your situation.

Is a Hair Transplant The Only Answer?

im 21, but have been going bald since sixteen. i hate it cause im so young and have no confidence. i used drugs to solve it but nothing happened. is a hair transplant the only answer? sick of seeing all these ways of growing hair back, as in using tablets

At 21, you are young to be balding, especially since this has been going on since you were 16. However, you are certainly not alone; see the Age postings in this blog for some of the other questions (and my responses) from men your age. I would suggest that first you have a complete physical to rule out any underlying medical conditions that could be causing the hair loss. Once that is done, your next step would be to see a doctor who specializes in hair loss. Be ready to discuss with them your medical history, what hair loss treatments you have tried and for how long, what effect they have had, and what is your family history of balding.

A hair transplant may be appropriate at your age if your future genetic balding pattern can be determined. A good, ethical hair transplant surgeon will be able to tell you whether surgery is an option, or if Propecia alone would be beneficial at this stage in your balding. Do not rush into surgery without a clear understanding of what your future balding pattern may be.

Is Avodart Making Me Angry?

Since taking propecia for three months then switching over to avodart for a further six months, i seemed to be very agrivated all the time and angry to the point were i was arguing and getting into fights. Is there any connection with this and taking avodart.

Why the switch to Avodart (dutasteride) from Propecia (finasteride)? Propecia is the only FDA approved oral medication for the treatment of hair loss. Avodart is not. If the Propecia was working well for you and had an acceptable side effect profile for you, you should go back to using it. Avodart has not been shown to help with male pattern baldness better than Propecia unless the dose is three to four times higher than recommended dosages and even this information is suspect. Since it may be causing you severe emotional issues, you should strongly consider stopping this medication. We do on rare occasions see personality changes with these drugs. You may also consider talking to your doctor or therapist about your anger issues if in switching, your anger has not subsided.

Is Acne Caused by DHT?

You said before that Propecia/finasteride has no effect on sebum. And some people have complained that Propecia has increased their acne. I was on Propecia for 58 days and I didn’t notice my acne getting any better or worse. This being said, is it safe to say that acne is not caused by DHT? Sure, DHT might be present but maybe it’s caused by something on the surface of the skin, such as skin cells not being sloughed off fast enough.

According to Wikipedia, “[acne] is a common skin condition, caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units, skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland via androgen stimulation.

The pilosebaceous unit (hair, gland, and follicle) become infected as they are colonized by bacteria that destroy some of the microscopic anatomy. The output of sebum just feeds the areas which become infected and the circulating androgens. The list of causes are listed here, as well as descriptions of the social impact of the process in its teenage victims. DHT is just one of the androgens that contribute to acne so the use of drugs like Propecia usually fail to solve the acne problems.

Is Avodart Going to Be FDA Approved for Treating Hair Loss?

I read someone’s comment in one of your blog entries from long ago, suggesting that Avodart was seeking approval from the FDA (something about being in Stage 2 trials). We know it hasn’t gotten FDA approval, but are they actually seeking it?

There is a report just published two weeks ago on the U.S. government website ClinicalTrials.gov which indicates that phase III clinical trials are in process for Avodart in Korea. That is great news for us, because the indications are strong that Avodart (dutasteride) will be more effective than Propecia for the treatment of male patterned genetic hair loss. The most pointed questions which need to be answered are the frequency of side effects, particularly sexual libido supression.

There are some studies out there proving the efficacy of Avodart (dutasteride) for prevention of hair loss. It is documented that blocking type one 5-alpha reductase may be as important as type two in treatment of baldness. Unfortunately, the study done at Duke University, published in December 2006, is limited to 24 weeks and we don’t have enough information on the long term effects of dutasteride on hair loss.
