Lingering sexual side effect from finasteride

Have you encountered patients that have had side effects that lingered for a few months after dropping the drug, like me? If so, did they get better?

They usually got better. You should think positive as the Nocebo effect is real

Limitations of FUE

When you shave your hair very close to the scalp and you had a significant FUE procedure done, you will see the missing hairs very clearly, especially if your hair is dark and your skin is light as shown in this photo below. Imagine that you were the surgeon and you had to take out 3500 FUE grafts from this man’s head (look above in the normal scalp), or course you would leave ‘holes’ as shown below, it can’t be avoided unless this man’s donor density was much higher and the grafts were taken over a larger area (impossible if it must be kept to the permanent donor zone). Many people feel that FUE is preferable to strip surgery, but when you do extensive FUE as this man has, a single thin line scar (1-2 mm wide) may be better than this look. In either case, it can easily be repaired with Scalp Micropigmentation, a must to if this man wants to keep his hair on the short side. (CLICK TO ENLARGE and you can see that the surgeon did a reasonable random job in selecting the 3500 grafts to excise))

Lipodrene SR and Hair Loss

Dear doctor, I started using Lipodrene Ephedra-free formula since 3 days and I’m getting scared because of the hair-loss thing. I would like to know if this problem is caused only by ephedra or there is the possibility to loose hair even with the s-r formula? Thanks for your attention, I look forward to hera from you soon.

Lipodrene SRThe pill doesn’t seem to contain anything that would cause hair loss (ingredients here), but as it is a weight loss supplement, in general it has the potential to lead to an unhealthy diet… and that could cause hair loss.

In your case though, you’ve only been taking Lipodrene SR for 3 days, and I wouldn’t expect any major reaction that quickly and I’d look into other possible causes. I’d discuss your concerns with your doctor, which you should do before starting any new diet regimen anyway.

Is there a link between prostate cancer, balding and finasteride or dutasteride?

According to the attached article from Harvard Health (thanks for the reference) and a group of Australian doctors who studied two groups of about 1400 men, they found that men with bald spots at the top of their heads (vertex baldness) were one and a half times more likely to have prostate cancer than those without bald spots. As an aside, we have also known from other studied that men who have vertex (crown balding) have a higher risk of heart disease and chances of dying of a heart attack. So what does this tell us? If you have Crown balding, be careful to check your heart and your prostate.

Listing of African American Dermatologists?

Is there a way to find a national listing of African-American dermatologists? I am especially interested in those that deal with Seborrheic Dermatitis in African-Americans. I have had this condition since high school and I am now 27 years old. I am seeking an African-American simply because other dermatologist seem to have shampoos/treatments they want me to use on a daily basis. As an African-American woman, I cannot do that or my hair will be damaged. My hope is to find someone who has researched alternative treatments due our hair type.

Thank you.

The listing services do not go by race, so that would be a difficult distinction to make. You might see Dr. Pearl Grimes, an African American Dermatologist extraordinaire here in Los Angeles if you are on the West Coast or would be willing to make a trip to meet with her. Dr. Grimes is the Director of the Vitiligo and Pigmentation Institute of Southern California, and is also a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at UCLA.

What is the Life Expectancy of a Hair That Has Begun to Shrink?

For example, I have noticed, that sometimes when I lose a hair, it is thinner than other hairs that fallout, yet it is still as long as the thick hair. I understand that a normal hair loves and grows for 2-7 years. So would a hair that has begun to shrink have a similar life expectancy? If I am diffuse thinning, and some of my scalp hairs are beginning to lose caliber, would it be appropriate logic to think that some these hairs (although smaller) will last at least 2 more years? The reason I ask is I believe myself to have good density, and I do not notice an abnormal amount of hair fall out. But the hairs I do shed look thin.

  1. Does miniaturization decrease the size of the hair by half every cycle? Or gradually?
  2. Will the thinner but still not quite miniaturized yet hairs I have be around for a while?
There are many degrees of hair miniaturization and the life of these hairs depends upon the degree of miniaturization. When it progresses to a thread thinness, then it is near the end of its life and often is not growing at all, just hanging in. Hairs that lost 50% of the bulk, for example, will vary in the time it takes to get to a thread-like state because the disappearance of the hair depends upon the aggressiveness of the balding process. So, it is impossible to really answer your questions as the answer relates to the aggressiveness of your balding and what you are doing about it. People on finasteride, for example, can hold on to 50% miniaturized hairs for years.

Liposomal finasteride

Most of the topical finasteride sold today can get through the skin and its not the Liposomal preparation. if the drug gets through the skin into the body and you are known to get side effects with the pill, you will get it with the normal topical finasteride. With the Liposomal preparation; however, the measured maximal absorption for topical liposomal finasteride was reported to be rarely in excess of 18% of the total dose. I hope that language better explains what I know. But I would be happy to review articles you might have as I always keep an open mind. Last week I had a patient with the ethanol/ PG base solution and he had bad sexual side effects and that is why he came to me to get the Liposomal preparation.

A Liposomal preparation of a drug puts the active drug inside very tiny, fat-like particles. This allows more localization of the drug. Men who have measured their DHT levels found that with the topical liposomal finasteride preparations, their DHT levels did not change.

Lithium and Hair Loss

Having too much fun so the Docs here prescribed me lithium at 600 mg daily…of course my question to you is does lithium have any potential side effects regarding hair loss???

Simply put, yes… Lithium and other antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs are known to contribute or to cause hair loss.

Livon for Dry Hair and Minoxidil

i have been losing hair from either side of my forehead.now im using minoxidil 5%.i was using other oil and wash it was before using minoxidil.but i came to know that if we use other oil it wont allow minoxidil to penetrate into scalp.so i stopped using it.but now my hair has become dry and is difficult to comb.there is a hair fluid called livon which instantly smoothens and softens dry hair.it is usually used on towel-dried hair.so i wanted to know whether i can use it and if i use will it stop minoxidil to enter into scalp or should i use the hair fluid after applying minoxidil.please advise.

While there is no way to be sure, but I would think using minoxidil at least 30 minutes prior to using the softening product (Livon) would be the best compromise.

Locating a proper hairline!

Why with eyebrows raised up? Is that how the rule of 3rds supposed to work? Distance from bottom of nose to eyebrows line should be the same as the distance from eyebrows line to hairline? But that should be properly done with eyebrows lifted high?

The hairline ends at the frontalis muscle when you are 5 years old. Ask a 5 year old to lift their eyebrows and you will see their upper middle hairline touch the highest crease of their furrowed brow. The juvenile hairline is always located there. and as a male matures his hairline without balding, it will go up one finger breadth above that highest crease and change its shape from concave to convex taking in a V-Shape. That is why I I always ask my patients to raise their eyebrows, to determine the proper location of the hairline.
