Massive infection from a hair transplant performed in Turkey (photo)

I suspect that this man may have had this surgery performed in a less than clean clinic with unskilled people who may not have been doctors and didn’t understand sterility as a concept. I don’t know the outcome but as a doctor in Europe sent on this photo, I suspect that this man will be treated properly now. This photo should be a warning to those in my readership who shop for bargain hair transplants in Turkey (there are good doctors in Turkey but they don’t charge $1/graft or less). This, regardless of the price this man paid for his bargain hair transplant, it will be a most expensive hair transplant to get him back to where he needs to be. His looks and his health are on the line.

The red you see is blood draining from green and yellow pus pockets. This man has many ‘boils’ or infected cysts possibly starting from a hair graft. Each one of these need to have a surgeon drain them. Once they are all drained and the bacteria cultured, the patient will be put on antibiotics and as new infected cysts appear, they will be drained again. Eventually good surgical draining and antibiotics will calm this down. He will have some scarring left and most of the hair grafts will probably die. Once he is recovered, a good surgeon will reassess his donor supply and hopefully he might have enough donor hair to redo the transplant. This process from infection to a new hair transplant could take up to a year.

Massaging My Scalp Causes Hair Loss!

Hi,

My hair has been thinning and falling for a few years now (I’m probably too late in asking for help), and now I can see that the hairline has receded quite a bit and the scalp is easily visible. The loss/thinning is limited to the top of my head in a horse shoe pattern. If I massage my scalp on the top, hair falls out. If I massage the side of my scalp, nothing falls out.

I also suffer from a very oily scalp/ face….

The question is, can I treat the situation or is this genetic? Is oily scalp a culprit? It does feel like hair falls out faster when my scalp is oilier.

thanks

Oily scalp is not the reason for your loss. Genetics are. It is likely not too late to start on medication like Propecia, which can help to halt the hair loss and possibly regrow some.

If you rub the side of your head and no hair falls out, yet when you massage the top of your head you’ve seen hair loss, this sounds like a classic situation of male pattern baldness (MPB). The sides and back of your head retain your hair permanently (which is why you see so many men with the “horseshoe” of hair) and will not come out like you describe with a massage, and it sounds like when you put any traction on the top of your scalp, even gentle massaging, it’s causing those weak hairs on top to fall out faster.

You indicated in your email form that you were in the San Francisco bay area. I have an office in San Jose and you should consider making an appointment with either Dr. Pak or myself by calling 800-NEW-HAIR for a consultation.

Massive shed after switching Finasteride to another source.

Shedding after switching Finasteride supply source may reflect a counterfeit drug or a faulty production lot. Check the source and go back to where you originally got it from. I have seen this even in good stores when they purchase off-brands of genetic finasteride. Hair loss from Finasteride withdrawal may become permanent so act quickly and get back to a source you can depend upon.

Massive Shock Loss After a Small Transplant Procedure

Hi

I had a transplant of 500 grafts just 16 days ago in a very small area of old scar tissue. This is my second transplant to cover the area. The first transplant, two years ago went very well. Same Dr.

On day 12 after the second transplant I have experienced massive shock loss. The Dr placed grafts in between existing hairs in an area 10 square cm. ALL hair, existing and transplanted have fallen out leaving the area completely bald. Disastrous as was hoping to go back to work and nobody notice. On crown of head. What is likelihood of this hair growing back?? Cheers

Previously transplanted hair from the donor area that is lost following a hair transplant is very rare and when it does occur, it usually comes back with the new hair that was transplanted.

Massive Hair Loss After Eustachian Tube Inflammation

Dear Dr,

Im 31 years old, went ill with an eustachian tube inflammation and had 1 month off work, with severe pain and insomnia. A couple of weeks later, I had a massive shedding with incredibly rapid and notorious miniaturization of all my hair. I even clogged the drain, losing approx 40% of all my hair. The remaining hair changed its architecture, looked curly (my whole life have had straight hair). I assume this is hair degeneration. I started dutasteride 0.5mg/day immediately.

Is it possible for DUPA to behave like a massive TE? It looks like DUPA were stress triggered, and acted on onsets rather than progressive. Thank you.

This does sound like telogen effluvium, since the shedding started after your stress from the inflammation, pain, and subsequent insomnia. I would hope that if you started dutasteride, you’re already under the care of a doctor that prescribed it to you… but if not, you need to see your doctor for an examination.

Masturbation and Hair Loss – A Different Perspective

Once and for all, in regards to thousands of emails i imagine you get, i have a question for you. I can see there is a miscommunication with the emails you receive regarding matsurbation and hairloss. The way people are wording the emails they send you such as ‘does masturbation cause hairloss’ isn’t what i think their trying to convey. My question is as follows:

I UNDERSTAND that masturbation doesn’t CAUSE MPB/hairloss/genetic hairloss, however for the people who are loosing there hair due to MPB can masturbation exacerbate their hair loss (make it worse). Put simply, the only cure for MPB would be castration (removing the testicles). To gain an erection and to ejaculate you need your testicles, so they can perform their functions to enable erections. So logically, if your stimulating your testicles to perform its functions such as:

-producing sperm (spermatozoa)
-producing male sex hormones of which testosterone is the best- known

your increasing testosterone inturn DHT and other androgens. So if castration is a cure for MPB they only thing you can do is try and replicate what casturation does (it stops you from being able to ejaculate) SO in conclusion try to limit sexual activity (which will reduce androgen activity and you can help to reduce its effect towards MPB

thank you for your continued replies NHI. great work!!

PantsIf you are asking about what happens after one loses his testicles from castration, well, there will be no desire or ability to masturbate unless you take exogenous testosterone. I do not have experience with removing the testicles on anyone, so the subtleties of what you are asking are not my cup of tea. If you really want to know the answers to those questions, ask doctors who do sex change operations (male to female). They would know by experience, as sometimes they remove the testicles before they remove the penis.

If you are asking if a balding man increases his masturbating habits or sexual activities, will he accelerate his hair loss… I believe the answer is no. Theory is one thing, but to prove it is another. I’ve seen no such proof. Also, I posted a story about a year ago regarding China’s last eunuch going bald, so that is some food for thought — see here.

Masturbation: A common misconception about the link with hair loss

Okay, so I am sure all of us have heard this theory before: “Masturbation contributes to hair loss”. I have done a significant amount of reading on this and to be honest, it is hard to know for sure. Different sources are saying different things. Some say that masturbation/sex accelerates male pattern baldness and others say it does not play a role at all. Putting aside everything I have read elsewhere and looking at my own experience with hair loss, I struggle to accept that masturbation has been a causative factor. I am 24 now and only began experiencing hair loss last year. So from the ages of 15-22, I was masturbating A LOT and didn’t experience any hair loss at all. So how could masturbation be a causative factor? I am curious to hear other peoples thoughts.

Your genes almost certainly kicked in causing your hair loss. Your years of masturbating have nothing to do with building up of stress, if anything it reduced your stress. You are, most likely, just developing a genetic balding process.

Masturbation and Hair Transplants

i had a fue some week ago, and i masturbated already the day of my fue (4-5 hours after hairtransplant). No sex and no strange masturbation, only normal masturbation , many times. The same the day 2-3-4….Now, i read there isn’t a univocal opinion about masturbation after hairtranplant for the blood pressure. But can really a simple masturbation raises blood pressure enough to be dangerous for the grafts? isn’t unrealistic?why do some doctors say that? I still haven’t understood your opinion on this topic, because i read that sometimes you told that masturbation is safe also immediately after HT, sometimes i read you told it is safe after 1-2 days after ht and ,then, i didn’t understand what you mean when you tell ” masturbation is safe within a day of having fue”.Within a day means “after 24 hours” or ” immediately after hairtransplant”? So i ask : normal masturbation few hours later hairtransplant is safe or not? I didn’t bleed from my head.Thak you and i’m sorry to bother you.

Masturbation or sex after a hair transplant is fine. We all have our needs and they must be met. You will not damage the grafts.

Masturbating to Avoid Acne While Taking Finasteride?

Hi Doctor,

I’m 23. I’ve been taking Proscar 5mg for over 6 months and see some improvement. However, I keep getting mild acne. When I stop the medication, the acne stops. However, recently I started masturbating observed the acne stopped even during medication. Are the two activities connected? Do I continue masturbating to avoid acne? Please advice, thanks.

That’s quite a question…

If you are taking Proscar (finasteride 5mg) for the treatment of hair loss you are over doing it and overdosing. You should take one quarter tablet of Proscar a day. You will not gain any benefit by taking the extra dose.

I do not see any correlation between acne and masturbating. And I highly doubt you just started masturbating to observe this phenomenon and must be pulling my leg on this aspect of your question.

Masturbating Causes My Hair Loss and Boils on My Head

Dr,
I am 26 & experiencing severe dandruff ,itching on skull, hair fall after masturbation.I have small boils on my head after masturbation which automatically go away if I don’t masturbate for few days also is it normal for the skull specially the top part of my skull to remain hot after masturbation(this is where I am having hair loss)?

The above mentioned problem is recurring & is specifically caused due to masturbation, reason: if I don’t masturbate for few days these problems don’t occur. Please help me with you valuable advise.

We’ve written about this many times. Simply put — masturbation does not cause hair loss. I do not know what other advice I can provide or how much clearer I can be.

If you strongly feel masturbation is causing your hair loss, then stop masturbating. I suppose at that point, it is your choice — you can choose hair versus masturbation. I have no idea how small boils could develop on your head after masturbating, then magically disappear when you’re leaving yourself alone. See a dermatologist about the boils (infections).
