Can Toppik Accelerate Hair Loss?

Hello Dr. Rassman
Again, thank you thank you thank you for spending the time to provide this blog. It is an oasis in the desert of misinformation on MPB. I have a quick question:

Can products like toppik / couvre and / or hairsprays accelerate hair loss? Are there any negative repurcussions to using such products? I havent noticed any accelerated hairloss but I use toppik and hairspray everyday and wondered if they could be damaging my hair in any way?

Aside from my concern, I strongley recomend toppik to anyone with thinning hair. I’ve found it really helps for cover up / concealing purposes.

Thanks Again

I totally agree. Toppik (color-matched keratin protein fibers) and hair spray (glue, basically) are excellent additions to any hair loss sufferer’s cosmetic arsenal. I also highly recommend trying different styles to maximize the hair that you have (one of the reasons women’s hair loss is underdiagnosed is because they take the time and try different tricks to camoflage it well). As for these adjuncts causing hair loss the answer is “No” – there is no evidence that these affect your loss in any way. Chemical hair loss CAN occur with chronically chemicaly treated hair, but these two products do not fall into this category so you can continue to use them without fear.

Can I Use Hair from Under the Chin?

The best donor hair is from the back and sides of the head (scalp hair). The next best spot, if the donor area is depleted, is under the chin. The chin area can yield as many as 3000 grafts in some people with heavy beard densities. I would not want to use this hair for the frontal hairline because it would be too coarse and not look natural. Beard hair taken from under the chin can’t really be seen when placed well behind the frontal hairline. Other body hair has short growth cycles, unlike beard and scalp hair which have long growth cycles, so it is not as good.

Can I use a tooth brush to take off the scabs one week after my hair transplant?

Using a tooth brush to get rid of the crusts is a bad idea as it may actually pull out the grafts. Place the shampoo on your head, leave it there for 10 minutes, and then using your fingertips, gently rub the grafts. Repeat this twice a day until the crusts come off easily but do not be rough about this?

Can I Use Body Hair to Transplant into a Depleted Donor Area (Photo)?

Body hair is not terribly efficient for treating the donor area, and it will take a lot of body hair as well. More hair means more cost. It is much better to do Scalp Micropigmentation (https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/).

Can a vitamin deficiency cause DUPA.

DUPA is extensive miniaturization in the donor area from the back and sides of your hair and it is found in some men. I am not aware of a connection between Vitamin deficiencies and this condition but if you are Vitamin deficient, address it with oral supplement.
