Do Gray Hairs Fall Out?

Good morning doc. I’m a 26 year old male who is starting to go gray, pretty heavy on the sides & starting to in the front as well. Is this a good sign that said gray hair won’t fall out? Does this mean the gray hair has already passed a barrier to balding or is it just as likely to fall out as the other “youthful” (brown) colored hairs? Thanks for the great blog!

The graying of hairs is independent of balding (no relationship). Graying is genetic and not necessarily reflecting getting ‘old’, and you are not alone. I have seen many men and women who turn gray in their 20’s. The reason most people do not see them is that they hit the dying bottle and never show their secret.

Do East Asian Women Have a Greater Chance of Developing Hair Loss?

Is female genetic hair loss/hair thinning more likely to start in early 20s if you’re of Asian (Korean) heritage? I’ve read that East Asian females have a greater chance of developing diffuse thinning than Caucasians.

No. I’m not aware of any good scientific studies that investigated women with hair loss by ethnic groups. We generally believe that hair loss does not discriminate race, sex, or ethnicity. In other words, it is mostly the same for all populations. You’re not at any greater risk than a Caucasian woman is if the genes are present.

Do hairlines mature via miniaturization?

I still dont know if my hairline is maturing or if I’m balding. I wanted to know if hairline maturation occurred via miniaturization of the follicles?

Not always. Sometimes hairlines just recede without miniaturization. A mature hairline is located in the middle just one finger width above the highest crease of your furrowed brow with a gentle V-Shape from there, see here: https://baldingblog.com/mature-hairline-photo/

Do Hair Transplants Take Longer to Grow After Multiple Surgeries?

I have undergone my 3rd hair transplant surgery in March 2010 and I am at the 8 month mark. I am mostly satisfied with my results, but hoping for some more growth and increased density. I was wondering if the transplanted hair takes longer to emerge and mature when you have had successive hair transplants. I was told by my doctor that the hair transplants take longer to emerge after the third hair transplant and i should expect some more hair growth and increase in density.

I would like to get your thoughts around this. Thank you.

I’m not sure why your surgeon would’ve told you it takes longer for hair to grow after the multiple procedures, because the growth period is roughly the same for each surgery. The third surgery should grow at about the same time as the first one did. If you are concerned about growth, speak with your doctor again. I occasionally see some growth occur between 8-12 months, but that is usually in addition to what is grown by the 8th month.

You should be alarmed if there is no growth within the one year time frame, but less concerned if it has only been under 6 months. In your case at 8 months, you should see some good growth by now with hopefully a little more in the coming months.

Do Hairs Within a Trichophytic Closure Grow At the Same Rate as the Newly Transplanted Hairs?

Hello Doctor,

I had a hair transplant with the Trichophytic closure method, I was wondering, does the hairs within the scar take the same amount of time to grow through the scar as the newly transplanted ones?

My scar looks good..however, I’ve noticed some small patches where hair hasn’t grown through yet.

Thanks again for this fantastic website

After a hair transplant surgery you may experience hair loss around the donor area with or without trichophytic closure. There can even be large patches of hair loss. The hair loss is temporary and it usually grows back after several months and it can take as long as a year. Transplanted hair takes several months to grow as well (up to one year). The hairs in the trichophytic area should grow at the same rate as the recipient area hairs.

Do Hairy People Respond Better to Finasteride?

Yes, usually hairy people who take finasteride are early in the hair loss process, so that is when finasteride is most effective. At the end of the hair loss process, large balding areas rarely respond to finasteride. Everything else is in-between.

Do hard drugs promote hair growth

I just watched the Andy Irons documentary (A Pro surfer) with Andy and his brother who are known to have used hardcore drugs and are perfect Norwood 0’s. David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, Comedians like Richard Pryor, Joey Diaz. Do you think hardcore drugs lower your Testosterone and DHT levels? When ever I hear people saying hair is a diet thing I think absolute bullshit. David bowie lived off of cocaine in the 80s with like a can of tuna fish and some peanut butter or some shit and had perfect hair.

These guys are public. I doubt that their hair has anything to do with hard drug use.

Do I Have a Juvenile or Mature Hairline at 26 Years Old? (with Photo)

Hello, I’m 26 years old and was curious if I have a juvenile or mature hairline in my photo. My hairline has been the same since I was 16 or so by looking at past photos and I’ve had no hair loss or recession in other areas. The current length of it is 1/2in.

This is a great picture because you wrinkled your brow, as I always ask my patients to include in their photo, is touching the highest wrinkle. If you follow the highest crease, that is where your hairline was when you were 7-9 years old. The corners are rising very slightly, but this is still in the Norwood class 1 category and I would consider this a juvenile hairline still.

There is a wide range between when your hairline hugged the highest crease to a fully mature hairline. What is noteworthy about your present hairline is that the mid-line ‘kisses’ the upper crease, which is clearly the same hairline you had in the middle when you were between 7-9 years old.

Do I have DUPA

I would like to have a HT in the future when my diffuse thinning on top gets really bad, but I don’t know if I have DUPA, is it possible to see from photos from my iphone?

To make the diagnosis, buy a hand microscope from Amazon ($30 range) and then get photos like these from your donor area: https://baldingblog.com/do-i-have-dupa-photo/
