I Stopped Parting My Hair and Realized I Had a Bald Spot at My Hairline – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello Docs,

I’m a female, 18, and a few years back I’ve been parting my hair at my right. Recently, I’ve been combing my hair back with no parting and I realized I have a bald spot in the front of my head. Is there anyway my hair can grow back in that area? I would love any information you can give.

The photo you sent was blurry and honestly, without examining you, I can not tell what the spot is about. It could reflect a disease called alopecia areata, or it could just be the way your hairline is, or perhaps you had an injury earlier in your life (or a variety of other possibilities). There is no substitute for a good examination, and that should be your next step if you’re concerned.

Hair Loss InformationIn the News – High Dose Finasteride for Treating Female Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Off-label use of oral finasteride at 5 mg/day proved safe and effective for the treatment of female pattern hair loss in 43 premenopausal women in an 18-month study.

Treatment effectiveness was assessed in two ways: patient satisfaction scores and two blinded investigators’ evaluation of photographs. As a precondition for study participation, patients needed to have normal serum androgen levels, no clinical signs of hyperandrogenism, and no wish to become pregnant ever again. They also had to go on drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol for oral contraception.

At the 6-month mark, 25 patients (58%) characterized their improvement as “huge” and 14 (33%) as moderate; 4 reported no improvement. These results were stable across time, with the women reporting the same results at 12 and 18 months of follow-up.

The study appears to be unpublished and includes only a few dozen patients, but I found it of interest to our readers and worth posting. As the article points out, “an 18-month study is not sufficient to draw solid conclusions about the possible long-term risks of extended therapy“.

Hair Loss InformationFemale Hair Loss Specialist in France or Switzerland? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Thank you for your website, which is the best source of information I have seen. My twenty-four year old daughter has been losing her hair severely for six years and has been seeing doctors and trying various ways to stop hair loss, without success. Can you please refer her to a doctor either in France or Switzerland?

Block Quote

I don’t have any personal doctor recommendations in France or Switzerland, but you can find doctors in your area by using the physician search at ISHRS.org.

Be sure to research any doctor you’re interested in, but you should also know that treating female hair loss can be quite difficult. I wish your daughter the best.

Hair Loss InformationRogaine Caused Shedding Almost Immediately and It’s Not Stopping – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, I have 2 questions I am hoping you can answer.

Is hair loss on benzodiazepine, specifically xanax or ativan rare or common side effect? IF so, would taking it several times a month really impact hair loss?

Also, I am using Rogaine 5% (i am a female) for 10 weeks and I have been shedding from it almost immediately. I am still shedding and it is not letting up. I lose about 150-200 hairs a day. Based on what I read, the shed should not last this long. I am mostly concerned because I am losing most of my long thick hairs. Could I possibly be having an adverse reaction to the Rogaine?

Thanks

Hair loss from benzodiazepines are usually uncommon, though it is known to occur.

You need a specialist on female hair loss to assess what is happening to you. Minoxidil can cause a short term shed (1-3 months) usually reversing with the benefits progress from that point forward.

SINGER Marina Lambrini Diamandis has worn a wig for the last nine months after all her hair fell out.

The Marina and the Diamonds star’s luscious locks snapped off during a nightmare trip to a Los Angeles hairdresser last November.

Although I’ve never heard of this artist or her band, she has admitted to experiencing hair loss due to what seems like chemical damage, causing her to wear a wig for almost a year. I am sure there are plenty of others in the public eye that have similar experiences, but don’t make it known. Then again, the article says the band has a new music video and single coming out soon, so this could just be a way to grab some headlines. It worked.

Hair Loss InformationIn the News – Woman with Trichotillomania Pretended to Have Alopecia Areata – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

A mum who has hidden behind the hair loss condition alopecia for the last 20 years has bravely revealed a secret compulsion to tear out her own hair that has tormented her since she was a child.

Zena Williams was called ’cancer face’ for wearing a wig at school and for more than two decades she has allowed anyone who noticed her bald patches to believe that she has the auto immune condition that causes her hair to fall out on its own. But in the wake of No Pulling Week, the mum-of-one has finally revealed that she has been pulling out her own hair since she was a child.

At various stages in her life, Zena has been left almost completely bald by her compulsive addiction to hair-pulling – a little understood psychological condition called trichotillomania.

Unfortunately, decades of pulling out her hair probably has resulted in some permanent loss. She says she has stopped pulling out her scalp hair, but still pulls out arm and leg hair. Hopefully she gets some sort of treatment for this compulsion.

Hair Loss InformationMy 15 Year Old Daughter is Losing Hair – What Can Be Done? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My 15 yr old daughter’s hair has been thinning & it’s heartbreaking to watch her go through this. This has been going on slowly but surely for a few yrs & is almost certainly hereditary. Thyroid tests are normal, and, most tellingly, her maternal grandmother has lost most of her hair. Can Rogaine be prescribed for someone so young?

Block Quote

I would think you need to start with medical exam and a good working diagnosis for the cause of the hair loss. Your daughter needs to see a physician who can help and who is knowledgeably about various medical conditions, as hair loss in 15 year old girls generally reflects that something may be going on in her body.

Rogaine (minoxidil) is not recommended for women under 18 years old.

Hair Loss InformationFemale Hair Loss Has Continued For Months After Stopping Tramadol – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

(female)
I stopped taking Tramadol about 3-4 months ago but my hair is still falling out. My doctor had labs for my thyroid and it is fine.

I am losing less hair but still more than normal. How long should this last?

Block Quote

I do not know why you would think Tramadol would be the cause of your hair loss. We’ve written about this before. There can be other medical factors, and since you are under the care of a physician, that is a good place to start. Otherwise, female hair loss in general is a frustrating case for both patient and physician since there is no specific treatment if all the medical issues have been ruled out.

If it is genetic, the only medication available for women is topical minoxidil (Rogaine). Many women suffer from thinning hair / hair loss due to age and hormonal changes associated with menopause. I don’t know enough about you to rule anything out, though.

Could My Hair Loss Be From Having Diabetic Ketoacidosis? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

(female)
I have lost about 70% of my hair since January and am unsure if it was due to having diabetic ketoacidosis. I do have some regrowth but my hair is very thin, especially around my forehead hairline. Is this from the dka and will it grow back or should I see a dr.? I asked my endocrinologist but they said there could be a lot of reasons. I’m really concerned and don’t know if I should wait it out or seek further medical advice.

Block Quote

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a potentially life threatening condition. It is a major stress to your body, which could be one of the many possible reasons you are experiencing hair loss (much like what your doctor already told you). The most important point is to get your health back in shape and control the diabetes. If the hair loss is from stress, it should recover within a year.

I’m a Breastfeeding Mom And My Dermatologist Told Me to Just Deal with My Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I went to see a dermatologist in Raleigh NC. After he learned that my hair loss started 15 years ago, then got excessive in the last 3 months since I am a breast feeding mom, he came to the conclusion that I have the genetic type of hair loss and I have 2 choices if I am not going to have more kids – propecia or rogaine.

I mentioned that my scalp is irritated and I have a lot of pain. His response was that this may not be related to hair loss. Bottom line he said that he wished that he was a hero and could fix my hair but he is not and he asked me to look at his bald hair. He basically said there is no cure yet and just deal with it. This experience was so hard because I had hope that I will get some kind of help, instead I had to hear just deal with it and use rogaine.

it has been 2 days since then and still asking myself if I went to see a very honest dermatologist that happened to be a rude doctor or if there was some test and other practices that he should’ve proceeded with but would not or could not do.

Block Quote

I wish I was a hero too, but I am merely a doctor who has to inform you that there is no medical cure for hair loss in either men or women. Maybe your doctor was too blunt or was not sensitive to such a delicate issue, but I think your doctor was being honest.

In general, the only hope for women that want to treat hair loss (after excluding any medical reasons for the loss) is topical minoxidil, also sold as Rogaine. Propecia (finasteride) does not really work for women unless there is a clear diagnosis of androgenic alopecia and it should never be prescribed to any woman who might get pregnant. And since you’re a breastfeeding mother, it should be pointed out that it is unknown if the medication can be passed through breast milk. Besides that, even if you have androgenic alopecia, Propecia is generally not recommended for women since we do not know the potential side effects (including cancer). The cancer part may be very rare, but since there have been no large scale studies it might just be a worst case scenario that has been theorized.

The final option may be hair transplant surgery, but this is also a limited solution for women who generally have diffuse thinning. And since you were curious about tests for possible causes of female hair loss, they are listed here.
