Punch Biopsy to Help Determine Cause of Female Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

23 y/o female
All over hair loss for about 1 year.

I saw a dermatologist about a year ago, who did nothing but refer me to Rogaine. I am seeing a new doctor who suggested some hormone tests (all blood results came back normal last year) for FSH and a male hormone (she did not specify which). She then said “there is likely nothing we can do, but at least we’ll know the cause”. I am quite nervous about this, as I don’t wish to go through all the testing if there is nothing that can be done, and also because I have heard that with a punch biopsy hair must be shaved and hair will not regrow. She wants to do 2. Is it worth having this done? I am already losing enough hair and certainly do not want to voluntarily get rid of more…

Punch biopsyHair loss in women is a difficult problem, because most of the time there is no medical cure. Even if you correct the “curable” causes of hair loss, such as low iron levels or thyroid problems, it does NOT necessarily mean your hair will grow back. I suspect this is due to genetic causes, but women’s hair loss is different from men’s hair loss. Medications such as Propecia are not approved by the FDA (even if it were approved it may not work). Hair transplantation for women is also limited, because women’s’ hair loss is generally diffuse and there is no good “donor” hair area as there is in men.

Thus, often times doctors are left when a desperate female patient coming to them with hair loss and it is often times our reflex to order blood tests and biopsies to find the “problem”. Some conditions do show up on a biopsy, some of them are expressions of genetic female balding, and sometimes autoimmune type diseases like diffuse alopecia areata. Unless your hair loss is due to major medical problems, there are very few medical options available to you and Rogaine (minoxidil) is generally the main modality of treatment. When used as directed, the Rogaine works well in a small majority of women, and mildly in a larger proportion of women. Some doctors may offer a variety of steroid shots or other hormone altering regimen, but none of these methods have been universally accepted to work. The use of spironolactone injections have been discussed on this site before.

If you are losing hair and you need to know why, you can consider a punch biopsy. This is a question you need to address with your doctor, of course, as you weigh the risks versus the benefits. Your doctor should be able to tell you why there is a need for the biopsy and what he/she is expecting to see.

So Much Hair in My Brush Every Time — Is It Cancer? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m constantly losing hair and i’m getting worried…i’m 15 (female) and my hair lose has just got worse and worse…my hairs are everywhere around the house and even when i’m not brushing it i can still see strands and strand of hair dangelling and then when i do brush my hair my brush is completely full of hair after 2minutes of brushing it…i dont over brush my hair or underbrush it but theres a history of cancer in my family…my mum had cancer and my dads currently got cancer…could this be a sign of cancer?

This is most certainly not a sign of cancer. Normal people lose 100-150 hairs per day (not necessarily all on the brush, but throughout the course of a day). Some people obsessively count the hairs that come out, but if you are truly concerned, see a dermatologist or hair specialist.

I’m Looking for an African American Doctor – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i am a 31 year old black women. i was dianosed with alopecia a year ago (10-1-06). i was getting injection in the top of my head and around the temples with this medicine called (clearmgsin and depomedrol a steroid) but i am still bald in the top of my head. some of the side hair started to grow but not fully. the doctor told me that i should consider a hair transplant. i dont know if i am a candidate for transplant. i’m looking for a african american doctor

Alopecia means hair loss in Latin. Hair transplantation in an African American patient is difficult due to the curly hair that extends beneath the skin down to the roots. It is much more difficult to transplant than someone with straight hair. As such, you need to find a very qualified hair transplant surgeon with extensive experience transplanting African American patients. Having an African American doctor as your surgeon does not necessarily mean he/she would have the aforementioned experience. Moreover, most patients are not aware of the technical expertise required by the hair transplant staff. In other words, hair transplantation is a team effort and being an African American doctor will not be a solution for you without extensive experience with similar patients.

Hair Loss InformationWhat Is a Hairline Lowering Procedure? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m 17 year old female. I have had a high forehead since I can remember. I’m interested in the hairline lowering. What exactly are the procedures? Do you use my own hair? I have curly hair, how long after the surgery are you able to do hairstyles? How much is it to lower about an 1 inch?

Block Quote

The amount of lowering is about an inch, depending on the looseness of your scalp. A hairline lowering procedure is similar to a brow lift, excepting instead of pulling the scalp higher, it is lowered. Recovery is very fast and within a week. You should be able to have your hair styled, but there are sutures placed in the hairline which would have to come out in about a week.

Dr. Sheldon Kabaker’s website has a great Frequently Asked Hairline Lowering Questions page that should answer any additional questions.

Hair Loss InformationRegrowing Eyelash Hair with FabuLash Mascara? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

As you know, cosmeceuticals cannot be patented so you may want to reverse engineer FabuLash.

I was told about it by an esthetician who had marvelous eyelashes (no, I don’t believe what I’m told) so, rather than pay $150 for a tube of it (it’s applied as is mascara) I went on to eBay and bought some and began to test it almost a month ago.

Whereas one usually would easily see my eyeliner, for both my lashes and eyebrows are terribly thinned, I now have to dampen and then brush my eyelashes BEFORE putting on mascara to both untangle and to keep them from tangling while applying mascara and can also feel the tips of them on my brow bones. Yesterday I noticed that I’m going to have to do some judicious plucking on my middle eyebrow area.

I have NO idea how this works… or why. It’s NOT just a thickening of the hair or a darkening of it for there is no color change of the hair … there are hairs on both my eyelids and eyebrows that haven’t BEEN there in years (and I never DID have lashes like this, even when I was modeling) so I haven’t a clue. I have eyelashes into both the corners of my eyes and way out on the ends of the eyelid. The stuff does NOT sting my eyes either.

I started putting it on my hairline as well to see what may show up there but that was just 3 days ago and I’d have no noticeable results in so short a time.

Thought you might find this of use.

FabuLash
This email actually came in from an acquaintance of mine. Take what she said here as an honest report of one woman’s experience.

I’m often asked about regrowing eyelash hair, and while I can’t give a medical reason for this phenomenon, I nonetheless wanted to share it with the readers of this site. I do have great doubts that what she reported reflects reality, so take this for what you will. Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products which claim to have drug-like benefits (anti-aging creams, for example), and Revlon FabuLash would fit that loose definition if it did indeed regrow eyelashes.

There is a tendency for us to talk ourselves into believing that the impossible is possible. If anyone else tries this, please let me know the results.

Hair Loss InformationCan I Pass My Alopecia On To My Baby? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi I was diagnosed with alopecia two years ago and was receiving treatment and had hair regrowth then stopped treatment and got pregnant I am now 7 months and I’m having rapid hair loss. My question is about the baby, does my problem have any effect on the baby and will I pass it on to him in any way. I also want to know if i will loss all my hair or what should I expect to see after the baby is born and what kind of treatment is best after pregnancy.

Block Quote

I could have answered your questions much better if I knew the type of your alopecia. “Alopecia” just means hair loss. For example, is it female pattern alopecia, alopecia areata, or another type? You need to see a hair specialist to diagnose your hair loss. Most types of alopecia disorders have genetic influences. Genetics go from father and mother to children.

I recommend you to see a good dermatologist for treatment of your own condition and speak with your obstetrician about your concerns for your baby.

Total Hysterectomy and Hair Loss – Using Estroderm Patch and Nizoral – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Doctor I am a 51 year old female. I had a total hysterectomy last Oct. My hair has been thinning since. My doctor put me on a 0.05 estroderm patch and shampoo with nizoral shampoo 2 to 3 times weekly. My twin has not had a hysterectomy but has gone through the change and her hair is thinning significantly. What else should I do. As women, we would prefer not to be bald. Unfortunately our grandfathers on both sides were bald, so I am almost certain this is familial. What else should I be doing? This is very disturbing.

I found a good response on DocShop.com which states: “Hair loss may occur in patients who undergo major surgery. About three or four months after major surgery or a serious illness, patients may lose a large amount of hair. This type of hair loss is the result of stress associated with the illness, and the hair loss is often temporary. Hair loss is normal after major surgery, so it is important for patients to speak to their surgeon about this possible side effect before undergoing the surgery. If you would like to know more about hair loss after major surgery and ways to treat it, consult a hair restoration specialist.

I agree that you need to see a hair specialist. Hormone manipulation can cause hair loss and aging is included. Balding on the male side of the family may not correspond to female hair loss and I would look to the female side of your family (mother, aunts, grandmothers, etc.) for some insight as to what may be in your future.

Zithromax (Z-Pak) and Female Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 58yr old female, my doctor gave me a Z-pak steroids for a sore knee, 10 day treatment. Ever since then I’ve noticed my hair is falling out. Do you think the steroid pak was the cause? If so what can I do to stop it?

Block Quote

ZithromaxSounds like you might have hair loss from a steroid. The one-to-one relationship between taking the medication and the hair loss seems to relate based upon your history.

Zithromax (azithromycin), which is often referred to as a Z-Pak when in tablet form, is an antibiotic used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. I haven’t read or heard anything about Zithromax causing hair loss as a side effect. Speak with your prescribing doctor more about the hair loss and clarify if you did take steroids or Zithromax or both.

I Have Female Hair Loss – My Doctor Is Concerned, Too – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello,

I’m a 34 year old woman that has always had a full head of naturally curly hair. Unfortunately, my hair has started to shed ALOT. It is noticably thinner and I’m starting to freak out. My doctor is somewhat concerned and has ordered blood work done (waiting for results) In the meantime, I have a few questions:

  1. I lost approximately 30 pounds in 5 months the right way-diet and excersise. Can this be a factor? My body fat has went from 29% to 19%.
  2. I have always had dandruff???? But is seems to be getting worse.
  3. My hair was pulled severely in an accident 3 months ago. Would this start the process?
  4. If my tests come back fine, what avenues should I then look toward?

Block Quote

  1. Malnutrition or poor diets can cause hair loss along with any rapid history of weight loss.
  2. Dandruff does not cause hair loss, but excessive scratching will.
  3. A one time pull of your hair will not cause permanent hair loss.
  4. It seems that you have a good doctor, so ask him/her what the plan is for you after your blood work is back.

Woman Grew Facial Hair After Using Minoxidil for 2 Weeks! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,
I’m a 27 yrs. old female experiencing hair loss for quite sometime. I started taking minoxidil 5% about 2 and a half months ago and noticed facial hair growth in 2 weeks. I stopped taking the medicine about a month ago but the facial hair hasn’t reversed yet. Is this side effect reversible and how long does it usually take to reverse the facial hair?

Block Quote

Minoxidil facial hair growth was seen in the days it was used for the treatment of high blood pressure. I am told that it does reverse slowly over time. I don’t have a definitive answer for you, though.
