In the News – Teen with Alopecia Crowned Beauty Queen – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

A Salt Lake City woman is preparing for the next round of a beauty pageant, after winning a crown in a competition last weekend. The catch, she has no hair.

19-year-old Angelica Galindez was diagnosed with a condition called Alopecia, when she was 12. “The hard part was just looking at myself in the mirror,” says Angelica, who is now completely bald.

Alopecia is a type of hair loss that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. Angelica lost nearly all her hair by the time she was in high school. “It was very challenging, I cried a lot, I slept a lot, just to sleep away the pain,” says Angelica.

Hair Loss InformationMy Daughter Had Chemo for T-Cell Leukemia and Her Hair Never Regrew – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My daughter was diagnosed with t-cell Leukemia 10 years ago. She had 2 years of chemo and 2 weeks or radiation to the brain stem. She is now 14 and has very, very thin hair with much breakage. We were never prepared that her hair loss could be permanent. You can see her scalp through her hair. We have tried many things with no luck. We have no idea where to go for help.

I looked for a Trichologist, thinking they would have answers but cannot find any in Michigan. I don’t know how she would feel about having a hair transplant at this time or should we go to a Dermatologist? Wigs did not work so if you have any suggestions on what we should do, we would greatly appreciate it. (she had T-cell Leukemia)

Thank you for your time!

If the hairs never grew back after almost a decade, unfortunately there is not much you can do. Hair transplantation will likely not work since the donor hair will also be depleted. From a medical or surgical perspective, unfortunately there’s really nothing I can think to offer.

If your daughter has some hair density, there are hair camouflaging products like DermMatch or Toppik — and there is also a permanent camouflage called Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP).

Hair Loss InformationFemale Hair Loss from Graves’ Disease? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

(female)
I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism) a few years ago and it has caused hair loss. I’ve been taking prenatal vitamins to help prevent the loss but it is still thinning fast. Is there any help out there for me? Desperate for Answers

Block Quote

Other than getting control of the Graves’ disease, I don’t know of any specific treatment for hair loss resulting from it. If you have the disease under control, the hair will likely come back! Give it a full year.

I Saw Immediate Rash and Shedding After Starting Rogaine – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,
I am a 45 yr old female and have been diagnosed with hereditary loss. I started rogaine 5% about 10 days ago, I immediately developed a rash and started to shed more than 200 hairs a day and worse when I washed it? My hair was already diffused on top and now it is ten times worse.

I want to stop use because i cannot afford to continue to shed like this. Will the hair I lost grow back without use of rogaine, or is it gone forever?

There is no way to predict if the hair will grow back, but I suspect it will once the allergic reaction passes. It will take months to see the positive impact on regrowth.

Could I Be Allergic to my Chemical Hair Relaxer? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello,
I am experiencing hair loss in the crown of my head the size of a quarter. I am an african american woman. When I keep my hair braided with no chemicals, the hair grows back, so I know that it has the ability to grow. When I put a relaxer on my hair, I experience itching from within in only one area, then a month or so later the hair will fall out, but it only comes out in the same area. Could I be just allergic and sensitive in only one section of my hair. What do you recommend?

Block Quote

Yes, an allergy would be highly probable. It might also be a chemical burn. I have no suggestions other than speak with your stylist or your dermatologist.

Is Tetracycline Causing My Female Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m 17 years old female. I have been taking tetracycline for about 2 months for acne and have recently noticed a fair amount of hair falling out of my head when i wash/dry/brush it. This has been happening for about 3/4 weeks. I just wanted to know if there’s a link to it and if i stop taking it will my hair be okay? I’m really worried. I haven’t noticed that its going very thin, or any bald patches.

Block Quote

The relationship between tetracycline and hair loss is known, though rare. If the only change in your medication schedule over the two months was tetracycline and the hair loss started with this drug, then there may be an association between the two. Speak to your doctor about this problem and possible alternatives to tetracycline.

Using Rogaine on Chemically Relaxed Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

can an african american female who relaxes her hair use rogaine? are there any known cases where using minoxidil on relaxed hair has caused breakage.

Block Quote

These are two complex issues which should be overseen by a competent doctor who knows about minoxidil and relaxers.

Generally speaking, minoxidil (Rogaine) will work on African Americans who use relaxers with no difficulty, but it is recommended that you don’t use the minoxidil on the same day that your hair is chemically relaxed, as it could cause scalp irritation.

My Mom’s Dermatologist Prescribed Clobetasol for Months and Her Hair Loss is Even Worse! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My mom’s hair was thinning a little. She went to see a dermatologist. The doctor prescribed Clobetasol ointment & Clobex shampoo. She was using these for 6 months straight. Her hair was falling out in clumps & getting a lot worse. The doctor kept telling her it takes time. Everything that I read about Clobetasol states not to use it more than 2 weeks. Would Clobetasol and/or Clobex make her hair loss worse? Please help.

Thanks!

Heavy doses of Clobetasol (a corticosteroid) can cause hair loss, among other systemic side effects. If you are concerned about this treatment, I would ask your mother to seek another opinion by a physician you see face to face, not over the Internet. I do not know the diagnosis here, so I can not comment on the treatment plan.

Hair Loss InformationI Saw a Bald Patch Appear After My Mom Died – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

(female)

My mother died in 10 months ago. The night before the service i washed my hair and noticed a patch of my hair was gone. It is now 10 months later and no hair has come back, but the patch has not gotten any bigger. what can i do?

Block Quote

See a good doctor to make an assessment of your problem. There are many causes for hair loss and an experienced doctor can give you a diagnosis after a good examination of your hair and scalp.

It’s possible the stress from the loss of your mother caused your loss, and if that is the case I would expect some hair to start growing within a year.

Hair Loss InformationI Have Chrome Pain Syndrome, Hair Loss, and Other Ailments – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 53 year old caucasion female (post menopausal) with fibromyalgia and some sub-clinical auto-immune syndromes, chronic pain syndrome, failed back syndrome, and on and on. I have also been experiencing hair loss from the entire head and have several plaques that my rheumatologist is concerned about, because the skin is tightening. I have also had numerous spots of alopecia areata. Mometosone furoate 0.05 cream has stopped the general shedding, but i am still dealing with the alopecia spots. I want to have injections (kenalog or similar) to get the hair growing fast in those spots, while they can still be treated. could you comment on some or all of the following treatments:

1) oral prednisone
2) aldacton
3) aldara
4) very brief and minimal use of mometasone furoate ointment 1/g on the worst spots.
5) if a woman begins treatment with rogaine, do she have to use it forever?

Thanks if you are able to answer any of these questions. i realize this is not the equivalent of seeing a physician.

Block Quote

I really can not go into the multiple medications you discussed, as I am not your treating physician and don’t have your medical history. Alopecia areata can come and go, and any doctor that is going to manage your medications and various conditions should be a doctor who you respect and like.

Rogaine (minoxidil), when used, takes at least 12 months. If it is effective, it must be considered a lifetime medication or any benefits will cease if the treatment is stopped.
