Hair Loss InformationRecent Transplant in 19 Year Old – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I would like to get some information on hair loss. I’m 19 and lost my hair on the temples. It’s not that bad because I can cover it. It’s the only hair loss problem.I had hair transplants in that area done by Dr [name removed], 250 grafts on each side. it’s been 2 and a half month’s now, can’t see any results yet. also the Doctor prescribed propecia for me but he say’s it only stops the hair loss in the crown area and there my hair is full and is in my family as well!!! I have been taking it for 5 months now and am not sure if should continue taking it!!! What would you recommend? I don’t want to lose anymore hair and also after I see the results from the transplant I had and want to still fix my hairline I really like what you are offering!! Please email me on your suggestions!! Thank you

If it has only been a few months since the transplant, you must wait this out. I suspect that you had 250 grafts in each corner, similar to a Norwood Class 3 pattern. The full benefit of Propecia will take 8-12 months, and the transplant should show 80% of the benefit in 8 months. Keep on the course you have started and do not stop the Propecia.

I am concerned that you had a transplant at the age of 19. If you are in Los Angeles, please come by and introduce yourself for a second opinion. You need to have your scalp hair mapped out for miniaturization and you need a Master Plan in hand, particularly now that you already started the process.

14 Year Old with Thin Temples – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello, I am 14 years old and I recently cut my hair very short. I noticed the the area near my temples seem a lot thinner than the rest of my hair. I am asian, chinese to be specific. I was wondering what is causing this, or is this normal?

Block Quote

Considering your age, I would suspect that you are moving toward a normal maturing hairline. Your hairline (including the temples) that are shown in the photo you sent show that your frontal hairline is still your youthful hairline. Changes in both the frontal and temple hairlines occur as boys become men (usually at age 18-20, but it can start as young as 13). You can either wait and see what further changes occur or take the next step to have your hair mapped out with a densitometer or magnifying video-camera for miniaturization which will give you a more thorough evaluation by looking for the patterns of hair loss (unlikely based upon these photos) shown in the Norwood Classification chart. Look to your family’s male members and see if their temples reflect the changes you are experiencing, just further down the road. Also, get your parents involved with this — at only 14 years old, your parents should be able to help you along the way.

Suggestions for 23 Year Old with Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I just turned 23, and I have expierenced hair lost for some time now. I would have to say beginning at 8th grade. The kids would make fun of me and tell me I needed rogaine. Well its obviously not stopping and my hair is not coming back. Its curly and long due to not having a hair cut in a while, and everytime I wash/condition my hair, I can see clumps come out everytime. My self esteem is way down and I have tried products before that just dont work. I even joined the Hair Club and spent lots of money for no improvement. U have any ideas/suggestions what I can do or what causes my loss so much. thanks.

Nioxin, Minocycline, and Hair Loss – Balding Blog

I am 17 and noticed that my hairline has started to recede. My hair line has always been some high on my head but now that ive noticed some hair loss it doesnt look very good. I just want to know if something else can cause receding hairlines or is it just MPB. If it is MPB can propecia help me? Im going to see a dermatologist to get a referel for a hair specialist to get a miniaturization done. Also what are your thoughts on nioxin hair products? And last i would like to know if minocycline can cause hair loss?

The rise in your hairline may be the maturing process common in men between 17-29. It rises about 1/2 inch in the front and up to an 1 1/2 inches in the corners and this is not genetic hair loss. Nioxin makes a good set of products that are popular but there is nothing in it that will stop hair loss. Minocycline is an antibiotic which is often used in the treatment of acne. If you are being treated for that, are you taking other medications? Some acne medications cause hair loss. I need a better profile on you, but it sounds like you already have a good doctor so stick with him/her.

Hairline Lowering in 15 Year Old Female – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am a 15 year old female from Michigan. I have been dealing with the unfortunate inheritance of a high hairline. It has made me suffer through a lot of insecurities for most of my teenage years and I would like to learn more about hairline placement through the insertion of new hair follicles that weren’t present in the area before. I would also like the find out the average cost for both 1 and 2 procedures for future reference if possible. Thank you!

The hairline lowering procedure is a good one. The best way is probably the surgical approach where the actual hairline is lowered by up to an inch. The results of this are immediate (hair transplants take time) but there will be some minimal scarring in the frontal area for a while (most disappear over time) and these can be covered with bangs or other hair styling techniques. You must get your parents involved and there must not be a history of female genetic hair loss in the family. Cost for the hairline lowering procedure (one time surgery) is $9,000-$11,000 (there are no extra charges for anesthesia and the surgical room).

The cost for a hair transplant solution goes by the graft, so I would have to see pictures (with your forehead creased by lifting your eyebrows) both from the eyebrows up and full face as well (front and sides). Graft prices vary depending upon the circumstances; standby pricing is the least expensive at $5/graft, regular scheduling is $6/graft, and the fees are a bit higher if you request that I personally do the transplant procedure. Transplant estimates may range between 900-1300 grafts per session. Some people can get it done in a single hair transplant if their hair and skin color have low contrast and the hair shaft thickness is not fine. I Don’t Want to Lose More Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr. Rassman,

I am just a college student and worrying about losing my hair. I can already see that I have a receeding hair line and wondering what I can do to stop losing hair. I am fine with the amount of hair I have. I do not need any replacements or regrowth. I just dont want to lose anymore. Please give me some advice as to what I can do. Thank you very much.

Get your metrics done with mapping out your scalp for miniaturization. You need a diagnosis and a Master Plan to determine what is going to happen for you. At 21, not all young men show the impact of miniaturization. If this is the case for you, then you will have to follow it over time. When and if you develop male patterned hair loss, the mapping will show it. If you are just developing a mature hairline (the hairline normally moves up about 1/2 inch), this is not considered genetic hair loss.

Hair Transplant in Young Adult – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

When I turned 18 I noticed that my hairline began to recede a bit and as the months went by my hair got thinner in the frontal area of my scalp & still getting worse. I tried Rogaine for a while but it irritated my scalp and caused flaking and I didn’t see any results, I was also on propecia for 2 ½ months then later stopped (kinda expensive). A month ago I saw an ad on tv about this product called scalpmed, (& it looked really convincing believe you me) they say its better than propecia & rogaine with no side effects. When I told my parents about it they were willing to support me but when we visited the website there was no return address, and I tried calling their customer care # and there was no answer. Now my mom gets the impression that it must be a scam or something. Basically I am just frustrated, but I would like to know the procedures taken in your hair transplants? is it safe for my age? How much will it cost? I hear its expensive. I just think transplant might be the only solution right now. Finally I hope I didn’t take up your time Dr and am looking forward to hearing from you.

When tackling male pattern balding, do not experiment and lose valuable time. Drugs like Propecia work best if early hair loss is treated, so time works against you and transplants in a person under the age of 24 (mostly) may be too soon to develop a good Master Plan for your eventual ending hair loss pattern. I generally discourage transplants in some men when I can not ascertain the final hair loss pattern. You need to have a diagnosis, so mapping out your hair for miniaturization is critically important to get a base line for the diagnosis and treatment. After 8 months of Propecia, you can get another assessment for miniaturization and see if you gained hair numbers and hair bulk.

If you are in California, come by for a consultation. Then we will put the entire power of what I know to work for you.

Native American Indian Female with Thinning Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m a 50 year old Native American Indian lady living in Phoenix, Arizona and would like to know why my hair is already turning white and thinning out. I’m thinking that I may have an illness that I don’t know about. Because it seem like I’m sick all the time. I am also going through my menopause so I don’t know if that’s triggering it.

I have gone to see the doctors and they taken blood tests, but keep telling me there’s nothing to be alarm about. But the point is I’m so wary about this matter and I see alot of the people in my age group that still have a mopful of dark hair and not going gray/white. Not only this, it seems like my face has age about 10 years older within the last year or two. Am I thinking (stressing) about this to much? What type of herbs or shampoo will help my hair? Or, am I lacking some type of vitamin deficiency? I don’t mind the aging gracefully, but not this fast. Please, let me know. Thank you.

I would have to write a book on what may be the cause of your hair loss. The fact that you feel sick is an indication that something may be wrong with you (such as hypothyroidism, eczema, alopecia, dieting, malnutrition, autoimmune, drugs, infection). Considering that you are an American Indian, genetic hair loss is uncommon, so I would start looking for a medical condition. Also, I would suggest that you get your hair and scalp mapped out for miniaturization, as that may point to genetic hair loss in the case that you are the exceptional American Indian with a genetic cause of it. In non-American Indians, hair thinning is present in almost half of females going through menopause.

Balding at 21 – What to Do Next? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Thanks for the blog. I’m male, 21 years old and started taking propecia at age 18 when I noticed some receding in my temples. I’m not exactly sure when the hairloss started but I did notice junior and senior year in highschool that I was shedding large amounts of hair which I thought at the time was normal. Although it is not yet “socially” noticeable as you put it, it still bothers me a lot and I feel that it is only getting worse even with the propecia. I don’t want to have hair loss be a problem or something I worry about in my life so I was wondering what I should do at this juncture? If I feel like it is only going to get worse, should I consider a hair transplant? Or should I start taking other medicines like Rogaine or Revivogen?

Block Quote

The key is first getting a diagnosis by having your hair mapped for miniaturization. This is when you have a doctor examine you to determine if you have genetic balding in the first place. There is no point to treating yourself, because you will never know if you actually are balding and whether the hair loss is getting better or worse.

Rogaine or Revivogen may have a place in your regimen, but in the unknown place you are presently at, you need to get a diagnosis first. Transplants on any 21 year old, except in extreme circumstances, would be inappropriate.

Hair Loss InformationLower the Hairline Without Surgery? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m a fifteen year old guy that has a high forehead. I would like to know if theres any way to lower it without surgery.

Block Quote

At 15, surgery is not really an option, unless there would be extenuating circumstances. The appearance of a lower hairline can be accomplished by shaving the front of your hair and putting glue to hold a wig in place. However, wigs produce traction alopecia (hair loss from pulling the hair), so using a wig will guarantee long term hair loss. I do not recommend doing this, but it is an option nonetheless. You might just have to learn to live with it. When you get to 30, if there is no male pattern balding that shows up, the lowering the hairline may be a good surgical option. You have a few years to wait on this.
