My 18 Year Old Daughter Is Losing Hair – What Should I Do For Her? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Could you please tell me what type of doctor you should take your 18 yro daughter to if they are experiencing considerable hairloss. Her hair is thinning all over her head, and especially on top in the front. Our general practitioner sent us to a derminatologist. We went to the dermatologist for around 6 months without any progress. He tried to tell us it was hereditary hairloss, yet no women in the family on either side has thin hair.

They finally ordered blood work that I got a copy of. They never even called us with the results. It showed her MPV was low, 6.4 fL and her Ferritin was only 12ng/ml. Not sure what MPV is, but I know ferritin is iron. I’m having her take a multivitamin in the morning and an iron supplement at night. I would like to get her into a good doctor who gives a darn and could help her out. She is very athletic and does a lot of working out and sports. Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.

Also, should I have her give Mens 5% Rogaine foam a try to see if we can accelerate the progress?

Ferritin of 12 is in the low side of the normal range. The best thing you can do is to see a good internist to treat iron deficiency if present and also to check for other medical conditions that can cause hair loss in women, including thyroid disorders, immune diseases, and PCOS. If there is a genetic component, then having her hair mapped out for miniaturization will show the classic signs of the genetic process in women.

Will Minoxidil Have Any Effect Now That I’m In My 60s? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’ve read that minoxidil works best in the early stages of balding and when someone is in their 20s into the mid-30s. After the mid-30s it is less effective. I’m in the mid-60s and began loosing hair when I was in the Navy in my late teens and early 20s. What’s the chance that minoxidil will have any effect? Is there anything else available other than an expensive transplant?

Block Quote

It is true that minoxidil and finasteride work best in the early stages of balding, but this is more true for finasteride (Propecia) than minoxidil. If you do not have any hair at all, minoxidil may not work as well, however, it may still be worth a try, as there is very little to lose.

Hair Loss Information17 Year Old Concerned About His Hairline (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman,

I am a 17 year old male concerned about hairloss. I have not noticed any receding or thinning or extreme shedding or any typical symptoms of hairloss. However, I have always had a very high hairline ever since I was 2. And from the front my hairline looks like a U shape when I pull my hair back. However, as you can see from the pictures my hairline lines up perfectly even with the side of my hair and does not go farther back like the diagram of the “receding” hairline does. I just want you to tell me if my hairline is a receding one or if it is the normal mature hairline that 95% of all caucasians get. What do you think? I have always and still do have a very thick head of hair, I just need to know if you think my hairline is abnormal or balding, or does there appear to be nothing to worry about. PLEASE Respond. YOU MAY USE MY PICTURES ON YOUR SITE!

Thank YOU SO Much!

Thank you for your permission to post your photos.

A high hairline at your age is most likely genetic and not a sign of hair recession or balding, particularly since you’ve had it since childhood. If you look back at your family tree, you could probably find someone in the family (either side) with a similar hairline. If you are happy with your hairline and there is no sign of hair loss in the area immediately behind it you don’t need to do anything. If you are unhappy with having a high forehead or you think the appearance of recession make you look older, you can treat it with either a hairline lowering procedure or hair transplants — but these solutions are not for a 19 year old male who may bald as he matures. This restriction does not include women.

Hair Loss InformationI’m Losing Hair at 14 Years Old! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

hi ! thanx for all the help you are providing us youngsters!

now to my problem. i am a 15 year old male, and have really thin hair, and the left portion of my head, and the top part are thinner than the rest. i had perfect hair that was envied by my friends till last year when i was 14. my hair used to be thick, straight and shiny.but 2 years back,it started getting wavy and i finally started using hair straightening creams to get my straight hair back. i used the cream a few times. i also used to eat very poorly. last year, i started losing hair at the temples. a few months later, overall thickness was lost and resulted in very thin hair. when i wet my hair, you can even see my scalp. and lately, i have lost hair on the crown of my head. even though i have improved my diet, i still experience a high amount of hairfall. can it be due to DHT or any other hormone? even my forehead is getting bigger now. what should i do??? help me!!! i need to regain my thick hair….please help. thanks

Poor diet can cause hair loss and changes in hair characteristics. Getting out of your adolescence will also cause hair to change. You have to be careful that you are not damaging it by what you do and you will need to see a dermatologist for a diagnosis, not from me over the internet. Good luck.

Atopic Dermatitis in Baby – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My 9mos.baby has Atopic Dermatitis, Doctor prescribed use of Cetaphil Lotion as shampoo. Now her hair is falling and she has itchy scalp. If it is allergy to the lotion how can i treat it to return to normal condition?

Block Quote

It seems that you are asking for a second medical opinion. This is not a place for such advice. If it is an allergy, it is very important for you need to go back to the doctor who prescribed the medication and ask him/her about your concerns. Your baby’s relationship with the doctor did not end with a prescription and the doctor needs to be kept in the loop if something is not going well.

I am not evading your question, but you should know that my practice is basically hair loss in adults with a leaning to surgery as a solution (when necessary). Clearly, the area of a 9 month old with atopic dermatitis is outside my relm of expertise.

Ceramic Hair Straightener and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,

I’m 19 years old and I am wondering whether ceramic hair straighteners (overuse) can cause hair to fall out. I had long hair and i used it almost daily without heat protection and I wasn’t exactly incredibly careful when I was straightening my hair. However I have recently developed a small thinning area on my crown, actually teh hair all over my head has thinned. I have therefore cut my hair short and have started taking specially extra potent vitamins recommended by my dad who is a pharmacist and so somewhat knowledgeable. How long would new growth take?

I am worried actually that I might just be going prematurely bald due to bad genes as well as the fact that from teh age of 15 i noticed a lot of hair fall however it is only now (my hair is/was extremely thick) that it has become noticeable.

Ceramic hair straightenerDamage to hair with heat from curling irons, ceramic hair straighteners, etc, can potentially make your hair brittle and cause loss due to heat damage, but it should not cause balding. If your hair grows back it can take as long a one year, as hair goes through cycles of growth.

Vitamins do not grow hair.

If you are female, I highly doubt you will go bald at the age of 15 from using a ceramic hair straightener. There may be a rare instance where you may have other medical conditions that you may not be aware of that is causing your hair loss. In that case you need to see your primary care doctor for further work up.

If you are male, I also highly doubt you will go bald at the age of 15 from using a ceramic hair straightener. If you are balding, it may be due to genetic male pattern hair loss, as it starts at the onset of puberty.

Restoring Pubic Hair in a 70 Year Old Woman – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

what can you tell me about restoring pubic hair in a 70-year old female?

Block Quote

At NHI, we’ve transplant hair to the pubic area in many women for whatever reasons they have. In a society where most young women are trying to shave or wax or laser off their pubic hair, we see older women requesting pubic hair transplants, as hair in the public area may tend to disappear with age in some women. As such, we do about 3 to 5 cases a year.

The last patient we performed pubic hair transplants on was a 60+ year old lady. She just called me a few weeks ago saying that the hairs have grown in and she is very happy with the results.

From Anorexic to Bulimic to Losing Hair – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I used to have extremely thick and curly hair when I was younger. When I was 15 I was anorexic and my hair thinned, but when I got over it, it all grew back. Then I became bulimic when I was 16, and abused laxatives until I was 17. It was only when I cut down on the laxatives and then stopped taking them completely when I started losing hair again. It’s more obvious this time too. The back of my hair is extremely thin with bald spots, and also near my ears. I started eating well, lots of protein, and I’m taking a multivitamin in case of missing vitamins or minerals. It’s only been about 3 weeks that I’ve been eating well again, but it’s still thinning, just a bit less. Do you know what could have caused the hair loss, or if it’s too early for me to know if it’s going to stop or not. What can I do? I’ve had a blood test for anemia, thyroid disorder and diabetes, but I’m only going to find out the results in about a week.

Yes, weight loss can cause hair loss and sometimes it comes back, while other times it does not. I can’t say for sure what the cause of your hair loss is, however. It sounds like you need to be managed by a good doctor, in person. I can’t tell you much more without an exam and medical history. I’m glad that you’re taking better care of yourself now. Please see a doctor about this.

3 Year Old Has Scaly Bald Spot – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

My 3 year old grandson developed a bald spot on the top of his head about the size of a half dollar. He is not scratching it and says it does not hurt. It’s slightly pinker than the rest of his scalp, and it is white and somewhat scaley, but not peeling. It’s slightly textured. He also has dry similar places on both elbows. What do you suggest?

He should be taken to see a pediatrician. Ringworm (a fungus) is the most common cause of this problem in young children and needs the attention of a doctor. I cannot diagnose your grandson’s condition with just descriptions, though. He need a good physical examination and history by a physician.

Vegetarians, Nutritional Deficiency, and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 17, male, and have been loosing the hair in the front of my head for about a year and a half now. I do believe during that time I had used a hair product I was allergic to, as I had a sore scalp in some ares. But I have discontinued it’s use, and was wondering:

  1. how normal (or not normal) it is to begin having a receding hair line at 16 years of age?
  2. being a vegetarian, could it be a nutritional deficiency?
  3. in other answers, I have seen you mention “normal ‘maturing’ hairline development”, or something of the sort. What IS a ‘maturing’ hair growth pattern?
  4. could masturbating or not exercising affect that, and if so, in what way?
  1. Yes, a receding hairline can start at 16 years old. Normal? That depends on the person’s genes.
  2. If you do not have a balanced diet and have a nutritional deficiency, you can thin or lose your hair — this has nothing to do with meat-eaters or vegetarians.
  3. You should get your scalp mapped out for miniaturization to determine when it is a receding hairline vs genetic hair loss. See Maturation of a Hairline — Moving From Juvenile to Mature for more on the maturing hairline.
  4. Neither masturbating nor exercise will cause you to lose your hair.

My best advice for you at this point is to see a doctor who can develop a Master Plan for your balding problem and work with him/her, as hair loss is a serious business.
