DHT and Milk – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman, I came across this interesting article. It talks about how there are DHT precursors in milk. What’s up with that??!

Cure-Guide.com

Could milk at all contribute to the balding process? Sure it might not cause baldness, but is it reasonable to believe that it could have an adverse effect on our hair growth?

CowEssentially, whatever the cow ate will be in the cow’s milk. The milking cow that is in high milk production will have considerable hormones circulating in her blood stream normally. The milk that “contains placenta-derived progesterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) precursors” will flow to the milk drinker. If the farmer put steroids in the cow as well, then you could get those into your system and any of these could potentially cause hair loss.

Now I’m not trying to cause a mass panic and tell people to swear off milk or dairy. The article that you provided the link to discusses what may be in the milk, but this has never been studied scientifically to my knowledge. I guess that there is not much money in studying it.

Could Pregnancy Cause My Eyelashes to Fall Out? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 10 weeks pregnant, and about 3 weeks go I noticed most of my upper eyelashes are gone. I haven’t tried any NEW makeup or meds. It looks like stubble is there as if it is growing back, but it isn’t. It’s looked the same for 3 weeks. Could pregnancy cause this?

You may have a telogen effluvium of eyelash hair, but I would wonder why it did not impact the lower lashes as well. There is not much to do other than wait this out for the moment. If it is caused by your pregnancy, then you can look past the birth of your child to see if it reverses. Let me know please.

Is DUPA Caused By DHT? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

i recently was browsing the internet looking for information about dupa and i came across this Canadian site which basically confirms DUPA is caused by DHT:

Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA)
DUPA is an uncommon variation of Androgenetic Alopecia in which the hair all over the head is sensitive to DHT and there is thinning everywhere. DUPA affects more women than men but the majority of women with AGA do not have DUPA. DUPA should be suspected if there are miniaturized hairs in the normally safe donor area. Hair transplantation is not an option for DUPA because there is no safe long-lasting donor hair.

I have my doubts that DHT is the cause of DUPA (diffuse unpatterned alopecia). I believe that there is a strong genetic influence behind DUPA, but if it was caused by DHT, it would be responsive to drugs like finasteride (Propecia) or dutasteride (Avodart). I have tried both on patients and the response has been very poor. So at this point, I will have to respectfully disagree with the opinion that DHT causes DUPA.

The typical female diffuse alopecias that impact all of the hair (including sides and back of the scalp) are not DUPA, but a genetic process which happens to have the same pattern (phenotype) as DUPA in males. It also does not respond to these drugs.

As I have mentioned in earlier blog posts, medicine is a descriptive science that often does not give us much insights to the cause of what we are seeing.

Bald Spots Throughout My Beard – Balding Blog

I recently retired from the Army. I used to let my facial hair grow on the days I was off and on leave with no problem. I would get a full beard over time. Now when my hair grows on my face I have bald spots. I have them on both sides of my side burns, on my left check, and on the mid part of my lower right neck. I have not shaved for about 2 weeks but the bald spots are still present. I am a 38 yr old caucasion male. Thanks for your time.

You may have alopecia areata, which appears as bald spots over different parts of the body, including the beard. See a good dermatologist to make the diagnosis, as I am only guessing from what you wrote and without seeing you myself, I can not really tell.

Chemical Relaxer Induced Genetic Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is it possible that a relaxer triggered hereditary hairloss?? I’m concerned because after using a relaxer, my hair has been falling out for about 4 years now and I know it’s been since I used the relaxer.

It sounds likely that you damaged your hair when you used the relaxers, as they are known to cause hair loss. Much of the time these changes are permanent starting on or around the time of the injury. If your hair has been falling out for 4 years, you probably have another cause for it and it should be looked at my a competent doctor who specializes in this area.

Seborrheic Dermatitis or Psoriasis? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello Dr,

I am a 29 year old male who developed scalp flaking problem last year. My doc diagnosed it as seborrheic dematitis but didn’t rule out psoriasis also. At that point there were no symptoms on my joints.

For the last 1.5 months I’ve again developed the flaking problem. I went to the local physician and he gave me Fluocinolone acetonide to apply locally. It aggravated my condition (lots of itching and more flaking). I discontinued the medicine but around 2 days back I noticed red spots (small swellings) on my left elbow and knee. Is this a sign of psoriasis? Do the shampoos that work for seborrheic dermatitis also work for psoriasis? Any other treatment or self care that I should be doing?

I am going to visit a dermatologist soon. The current situation is causing a lot of mental anxiety within me.

Thanks a lot

I really couldn’t tell you what you have without an examination, but psoriasis may start off with red areas on the skin leading to flaking and eruptions. These red areas, when they impact the scalp that is covered by hair, may not show up well. There is a fine line in the diagnosis between seborrhea (also known as dandruff) and psoriasis at times. I realize you are looking for help and anxious about your problems, but you are doing the right thing by making an appointment with a dermatologist.

Ringworm on My Stomach — If It Spreads to My Scalp Will I Lose Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have ringworm on my stomach. I am kinda freaking out about it! Every little itch I have, I think it’s going to be a new spot of ringworm. I have a really dry scalp as it is, but my main question is, if the ringworm has spread to my head, will my hair fall out? Does this happen in every single case of ringworm on the scalp, or can it possibly not cause hair-loss and continue to grow?

If you have ringworm on your abdomen, it can be treated and it will not necessarily spread anywhere if it is under good treatment. Ringworm is not really a worm, but a fungus. See a doctor about this soon so you can stop freaking out!

Itchy Scalp After a Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello i just want to ask you a question, i had a hair transplant about 4 months ago but lately i have been getting a itchy scalp and when i itch it, there are alot of flakes that come off. What could this be?

Healing can produce itching. You might consider applying conditioners that are made for dry skin and see if this solves the flaking problem.

Anti-Nuclear Antibodies (ANA) and DUPA – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Doctor, when a patient have DUPA, his/her ANF (Anti-Nuclear Factor) is positive? I have no balding parents nor relatives (until the 4th generation above myself), but I think I’m suffering DUPA and it began just after a heavy stressing period

Block Quote

The diagnosis of DUPA (diffuse unpatterned alopecia) is made by mapping out your hair and scalp for miniaturization. A good examination is critical. Hair loss in men comes about for four reasons:

  1. Genes
  2. Male hormones
  3. Stress (you seem stressed)
  4. Time (the longer #1-3, the worse the problem will become)

To avoid confusion, ANF and ANA are the same thing (see Wikipedia for more info). I am not familiar with a positive ANA factor as a participating cause of DUPA. Conditions like DUPA can occur with a variety of autoimmune diseases of which some of them may have positive ANAs.

18 Year Old Taking Propecia and Ritalin – Balding Blog

Hi doc,

I’m 18 years old and have been taking propecia for 5 months now, but the treatment doesn’t seem to work… My hair stopped falling during a while (I think) but I’m losing it worse than ever (find about 50 on the pillow every morning and 10 when i pass a wet hand through my hair, can’t imagine in the shower). I started Ritalin 3 weeks ago and got sunburn on my scalp, could either of these two have a negative effect?? I really thougt propecia would work because of my young age.

I also suffered from eczema these last 3 years and from excessive sweating from the armpits (use sudaxyl). Could all this be due to any kind of hormonal problem?? I lost more than half my hair on the frontal part of my scalp in a period of six months… Can’t imagine going out without a cap anymore, and quit my job for cause of depression… People my age give me 5 to 7 years more and I find all this very hard to come over.

Thanks for your precious advice.

This is when a direct examination is critical for a doctor in determining what is happening to you. I honestly couldn’t just guess on these things without examining you. Given the chance, I’d provide an exam and map out your hair for miniaturization. Propecia should protect you to some degree. Ask your doctor about what he/she would recommend and if you are in California, come pay me a visit (no charge to you).

You can call my office at 800-NEW-HAIR to setup a consultation (and this goes for any reader that would like a free consultation).
