Hair Loss from Braids and Ponytails – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

(female) I used to wear braids and ponytails quite often. I stopped wearing them when I noticed hair loss in the center of my head. Now, I am experiencing hairloss in the center of my head as well as the right side of my scalp. It itches even after I wash my hair. There are also bumps in certain parts of my scalp. They seem to be hair bumps. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Tight braids and ponytails over time will often lead to traction alopecia, but without an examination or even photographs, I really do not have a clue what is wrong with your hair. The bumps you’re describing could be a variety of things, and once again, an exam is key. Make an appointment with a local dermatologist and discuss this with him/her. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Teen Losing Hair On Sides and Back of Head – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am a 17-year old boy and have been losing my hair for a year now. Im losing quite a lot of hair on top but thats not the thing, the thing is that im losing some hair on the sides and the back of my head and its really scary. There is no doubt that i have male pattern baldness but im wondering if lets say one becomes a 5 in the norwood class doesnt that person lose some(lose som density) hair on the sides and the back. Is it just the norwood 7 and beyond that lose their hair their there or what? Please answer there is no one that can answer my question!!

With a traditional balding pattern as outlined in the Norwood chart (see below), the sides and back are spared. All thinning is limited to the front, top, and crown in patients with genetic male pattern baldness (MPB). So if you do have thinning hair on the sides or back of your head, I might think about diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA) — but this is all complete guess work without examining you myself. The questions you asked me via email should be asked of your caring doctor in person following an examination of your hair and scalp. I don’t know what you’re seeing, so I can’t provide much more than that.

Norwood Chart

You need to establish some measurements with mapping your scalp for miniaturization at a minimum in following your hair loss. You also need to have a good doctor establish a Master Plan for your potential progressive balding.

If I Drink a Lot of Water, Will This Make Propecia Leave My Body Quicker? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i have heard that vitamins in high quantity pretty much wash right through your system. I have (safely) really upped my daily water intake. Will this make propecia leave my system quicker via urination and sweating?

thanks, love the site!!

Nope. Drink all of the water you want. Just be weary of water intoxication.

Existing Hair Falling Out In Transplanted Areas – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi, I’ve had 2 hair transplants to the front of my forehead where i still had a substantial amount of hair. The reason i did it was to thicken the area up. I noticed that after the surgery, my current hairs fell out next to where the implants were put, and a lot never grew back. The surgeon said that was because they were going to fall out anyway, but that was 8 years ago and it is still obvious where my hairs fell out, the other ones near them havent fallen out. My question is, Is it true that the trauma DOES make existing hairs die?

For people who do not take Propecia (finasteride 1mg), they run a higher risk of shock hair loss or an accelerated hair loss pattern after a hair transplant. Your doctor is correct, but the acceleration is usually about a few years worth, unless you are taking Propecia (by prescription and for men only).

Cheerleader Got Hair Ripped Out! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

hi Im a cheerleader and recently while I was stunting my partner and I were doing a trick where I start laying on the floor. Well while I was down there he stepped on my hair and then proceeded to throw me up in the air. The results were a huge chunck of hair coming out, at least 50-100 strands. I have long dark hair, about to my lower back, and I was wondering if that hair will grow back and if so how long will it take?

It will grow out, but it will take some time to grow to the length you have now. It might take a few months to get started, or it may start in as little as a few weeks, but it will come back.

Hair Loss Triggers – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

You mention “triggering” the genetic switch and “turning on the switch for male pattern hair loss”. Besides hormones and age, what else do you think could turn the switch? I ask because no one in my family has lost hair. My older brothers all have full hair. Yet, I appear to be losing mine, and the dermatologist said my older brothers would be the best gauge for how my hair will be. That was encouraging, but I already appear worse than what they have and they are years older. Could using Xanax one time trigger the gene? Could a few stressful months trigger the gene? If so – do you think it can ever be stopped without medication or am I doomed to bald and bald and bald progressively more due to a onetime mistake with Xanax I took to fly?

I highly doubt Xanax would trigger hair loss. I believe you are too focused on the “trigger” that can cause hair loss, and are missing the big picture. If you have the gene (or genes) for hair loss, then it doesn’t really matter what you do, because you will lose hair. You really do not have much control over your genetic fate. While extreme stress (physical illness or metal stress) can precipitate the start of the hair loss, it is still tied in with one’s genetic predisposition.

High Prolactin Levels, Masturbation, and Hair Loss – Balding Blog

An abnormally high level of prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) is a condition characterized by elevated serum levels of the hormone prolactin in non-pregnant individuals. Hyperprolactinemia may cause progressive pattern hair loss due to an indirect effect on increasing free testosterone level.

I’ve read this in one of your post…So you say high prolactin levels are responsible for some degree of hair loss.Prolactin levels are usually very high after masturbation, yet you said masturbation had no effect on hair loss.

Any connection between masturbation and prolactin levels can not possibly have an impact on hair loss (if that is where you are taking this question).

It has also been shown that prolactin levels after sex are 4x higher than prolactin levels after masturbation (see PubMed). So I suppose you’re suggesting that:

  • Having sexual intercourse will lead to a 400% greater chance of hair loss over those that masturbate
  • Masturbating (instead of sex) results in a lesser chance of hair loss

I realize the two bullet points are the same thing just worded different ways, but I really want to make sure your points on masturbation were clearly outlined. There is simply no connection between hair loss and masturbation, as many of these hormonal changes are very short term.

Using Probabilities to Assess Future Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Dr Rassman,

Do you use probabilities when assessing future hairloss in a man who has MPB? I’m 23 and on Propecia. Men on my mothers side and fathers side are basically Norwood 7: both of my uncles were Norwood 6. My father is Norwood 7. His father was Norwood 7. My mother’s father was Norwood 7. If you had a patient that has a similar history of balding as me, what would you tell him? Would you say there is a high probability that he’ll become a Norwood 7?

To let you know how much balding I currently have:

I definitely have reduced hair density all over (not actual visible balding yet). There is some slight visible balding in my crown. My hairline is starting to recede past the “mature hairline” area. I’ve been on Propecia for about 1 1/2 years and it’s slowed down the balding significantly but it hasn’t stopped and grown hairs. I understand it might be difficult to answer my question without seeing my hair but any information you provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There is now a blood test which will look at your genetics to assess your risk for hair loss (see HairDX Genetic Hair Loss Test System). Predicting possibility through a test like this, however, has minimal value in my eyes, because it does not tell you what is happening to you, but it makes it known that you carry the genetic marker. Getting your hair mapped out for miniaturization will tell you what is happening now and it will allow you to follow your hair loss over time and judge the effectiveness of the treatments. Or, why not do both?

As hair loss can skip generations, I couldn’t say what the probability is for losing your hair without an exam.

Bald Spot Growing After Getting Hit with a 2×4 Years Earlier – Balding Blog

My boyfriend is 26 years old. When he was a teenager he was hit by his brother with a 2×4 on the back right side of his head. A scar was there after healing, but only about an inch long. A small bald spot remained there also. About 2-3 months ago we noticed a much larger bald spot there. It is about 2 1/2 inches across now. It is very smooth, there is no hair on it at all. Do you think he needs to see someone about this? I am worried there is something wrong. He just tries to forget about it and is hoping it does not get any worse. I cannot do that. What do you suggest? Thank you

The photo you sent is below (click to enlarge). Thank you for permitting me to post this.

If you or your boyfriend feel there is something wrong, then by all means go see a doctor. I viewed the photo you sent and I doubt a new bald spot like that can appear many years after a scarring injury, but it is clearly there… and there for a reason. What that reason is though, I couldn’t say. There are many other medical conditions that may be causing the balding, but a diagnosis-by-photograph is often very difficult to make. Unfortunately, my only suggestion is to have your boyfriend see a doctor for an in-person exam.

X-Rays and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

can MRI or x-rays cause hair loss? i had four mri and two x-rays and full body scan with dye in the last 10 months. thanks

Nope, I don’t believe that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-rays, or even CAT scans can impact your hair and produce hair loss.
