Hair Loss from Accutane After 5 Months of Treatment – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I took Accutane and began losing hair in my fifth and final month of treatment. I lost about 30% of my hair. My doctor has emphasized to me that I have telogen effluvium and that my hair will grow back if given time. However, I am skeptical. It’s been 6 months since I lost the hair. And I am a 23-year-old male with some history of MPB in my family.

Interestingly, I stopped shedding 3 months ago. My question is: is it a bad sign that I stopped shedding but haven’t grown any hair back yet? And do you really believe Accutane causes a “pure” telogen effluvium, or are there any other mechanisms at work?

An answer to these questions would be appreciated. Thank you.

If it is pure telogen effluvium your hair should start to grow back after about about 6 months. In rare instances it may take longer. With some family history of MPB and if you also suspect some degree of MPB, you may consider a miniaturization study to see if there is a pattern to your hair loss.

With respect to Accutane, it may cause hair loss as a side effect, but there is no mechanism of why hair loss occurs. I have unfortunately seen people with Accutane hair loss that has not returned. Only time will tell.

Is Straightening and Blow Drying My Hair Causing Thinning? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi. I am 19 years old male and over the past 3 – 4 months I have noticed that my hair seems to be thinning on the crest area of my head. During the same peiod of time I began blow-drying and straightening my hair every single day. I have also been diagnosed with seborrhoeic dematitis, and was wondering if the constant starightening/ blow-drying is causing this thinning. Furthermore my hairline is not receding at the temple area and both my mother and father are in their late fifties and still have a good, thick head of hair, as did their mother and father.

Normal blow-drying or straightening your hair will not cause thinning or balding. If you are thinning or balding it is likely genetic, and a good, qualified physician can assess this. Genetic balding in men (male pattern balding, also known as androgenic alopecia) can be inherited without your mother or father or grandparents being bald, skipping generations.

3 Months After My Hair Transplant, A Bald Spot Appeared Between the Crown and Donor Area – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello

I find your website informative

Here is my scenario. My surgeon is on holidays for two weeks. I had a scar revision and small graft session into the crown 600 grafts.

About three months after the procedure………I developed a small bald spot (size of a penny) about an inch below the crown diagonally betwween where the grafts were put and a few inches above the actual donor scar line. It was native high density hair.

The area in question is still very numb and tender. I all of a sudden developed a thick scab…………it came off with a bunch of hair and it is very pink skin below and a bit rough in texture and completely devoid in hair.

I have put emu oil on it for the time being……..

1. What do you think it is
2. Will the hair grow back

Thanks…….take care

Female Hair Loss After Haircut — Should I Stop Blowdrying Every Day? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am seriously and desperately begging for a solution to my hair problems at the moment. I am only 19.

About 7 months ago, (in Decemeber), i had a haircut where the hairdresser trimmed by hair by thinning it as she felt it was “too thick” where in reality it wasn’t even thick. She thinned it
alot and this occured in Singapore (where i am from and was visiting for three months) and in singapore even after she thinned it, it didnt look too bad. But after i came back to america…
It looks horribly thin! I never had such thin hair in my life.

It currently looks so thin and with no volume. I do blowdry my hair from the roots everyday. DO you think i should stop doing that?

Please get back to me. I am sure i can get my hair back. Please…
Thank You.

I do not know what is exactly involved with a hair dresser “thinning” your hair other than cutting your hair in layers. If this is the case, then your hair will naturally grow back. Blow drying your hair should not make your hair fall out or damage your hair unless you have it at an unusually high temperature setting. Use your judgment.

Hair Loss with Chemical Burn — Is It Seen Right Away Or Delayed? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

When you put bleach on someones head and they get a chemical burn wouldn’t they notice it while the bleach was on their head and even more so once the bleach is taken off of their head? I had a client who had her hair done by me June 8th and she is just now coming back to complain about chemical burn on July 19th! Which I think is kind of odd. Usually when people get a chemical burn they know it right away, right? Or atleast the next day or definitely by the 2nd or 3rd day at the latest. Not a month and a half later. I need your help with this please!!!

BrushIn general, any burn or local scalp irritation can cause hair loss. Chemicals can work their way down the hair shaft to get at the growth centers which lies at the bulb (5-6 mm deep) or at the bulge (about 2-3 mm from the skin surface). For heat burns, you should have a second or third degree burn to the skin and see it quickly, but for chemicals burns, it might take weeks for the full damage to be known. If the chemical burn causes complete loss of the hair growing centers, then the hair will fall out in 7-14 days, but if there is partial damage to just part of the growing follicle, this may take more than a month to understand the damage. Varying insults may force hair follicles to go into their resting phase (telogen) and after 2-6 months, it may go into its growth phase (anagen). In your situation, hair loss may be seen as early as a few days after the injury or it may also take weeks to see the full impact.

I Have So Many DUPA Questions… – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello,
I am a 23 year old male and am fairly certain I have DUPA. The hair on the sides and back is still pretty thick I think. However the hair on the top is thin from the normal hairline to the crown. It still isn’t that bad, I don’t think anyone would ever think I was going bald when it is dry, however whenever I exercise or go swimming it gets wet and almost looks as if I am malnourished or something; seriously. And God forbid it rain (I get extremely concerned when it rains and I’ve forgotten an umbrella) cause when it hits my head you can see straight to the scalp. My hair has always been very thin/fine ever since I was a child, but now I feel that it is getting worse. What I would like to know is if DUPA is not always caused by DHT, then what is it caused by? And it seems as though there aren’t many solutions to this type of baldness, except possibly Propecia, is there anything else? Also I have begun using Rogaine, is it worthless for DUPA? I know that’s quite a few questions, but to be honest that’s just the tip of the iceberg for me, I’m sure I’ll ask for more, Thank You so much.

Block Quote

You should see a physician to get a firm diagnosis of DUPA (diffuse unpatterned alopecia). You may not have DUPA if you have thick hair as you describe in the back of your scalp. Propecia (finasteride 1mg) in particular works by blocking the DHT hormone which causes AGA (androgenic alopecia) or MPB (male pattern balding). Since DHT may not cause DUPA, Propecia may not be of any benefit. BUT… I generally recommend male patients try a course of it, as some patients with DUPA do get a response from the drug. Keep in mind, nobody really knows what causes DUPA and drugs such as Propecia and Rogaine have not been studied for the treatment of DUPA.

Thank you for all the questions, but please keep in mind this site is NOT meant for the diagnosis or treatment of any medical conditions.

Dry Scalp and Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, I was wondering if a dry scalp can cause hairloss. Since starting Rogaine my scalp has become really dry and I am willing to put up with it, however, is a really dry flaky scalp a cause of hairloss? Thank you for your time! It is quite appreciated.

Having a dry scalp focuses additional attention to your scalp area where you are losing hair and you may be doing things that could cause hair loss (like rough brushing). With that said though, a dry scalp or dandruff are not related to male pattern baldness (MPB).

Can I Lose Hair From a Roller Coaster? – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman,

Is riding on a rollercoaster at an amusement park a smart thing to do when I have MPB? Would the stress (but it’s ‘good’ stress because the ride is fun) from the ride accelerate hairloss?
Does it depend on each person? FYI, I’m a young man.

Wow, I have answered some strange questions here before, but this one is a bit silly.

Male pattern baldness (MPB) also known as androgenic alopecia (AGA) is due to genetic causes. A hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is mainly responsible for hair loss in individuals with MPB. Baseball caps, masturbation, swimming, showering, blow drying, dandruff, and even roller coasters will not cause MPB.

Spina Bifida – Balding Blog

Hi. Im 15. I was born with spinabifida. About a year ago I started noticing my hair falling out. It wasnt much. Just a little but here and there when I combed it out. Then as time progressed, the amount of hair I was losing increased alot. Now every time I take a shower, I usaully comb my hair in the shower after I put conditioner on it. Massive amounts of hair come out. Its really scaring me. Is this normal or is there somthing wrong with me? Or does this go along with the spinabifida?
Thanks!

Hair loss in men and women usually has genetic causes that could be accelerated by other factors. There is no report to show that spina bifida is causing hair loss or that hair loss is one of the coexisting factors in patients with spina bifida as of yet. You can also see another posting on this topic here: Spina Bifida and Hair Loss.

Hair Loss After Hysterectomy – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’ve recently had a total hysterectomy at age 24. I’ve noticed that my hair has stopped growing. Is this something permanent or can something be done about it?

Stress and shock loss is something that we have discussed before in many posts in this blog. Almost any kind of stress can precipitate hair loss in some people. Women seem to be more impacted by stressful surgeries like hysterectomies, while men are more stressed by business, financial, or family problems rather than by surgeries. Any major surgery can cause shock loss and it is not limited to the scalp surgery. This is called telogen effluvium and is similar to what women experience after delivery of a baby.
