Scratching My Scalp So Much That I Have Bald Spots Now – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

About a year ago I started getting some scalp problems, primarily an itch. I would scratch the itch so hard I would develop some raw areas on the scalp that would scab over. Yet I continued to scratch and pick at the scabs until I noticed patches of bald areas on the top of my head where I had been scratching and picking. Will these areas grow back hair in time? Have I damaged the roots to the point no hair will re-grow in these areas? It looks horrible. Thanks.

You are clearly developing traction alopecia and these areas may stay bald. This is an obsessive/compulsive disorder and you should see your family doctor about his/her recommendations for treatment.

Do Men Have More DHT As They Age? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I was wondering Testosterone levels are supposed to be highest when men are in their 20’s, yet for most men the effects of DHT are not seen until later. Do men have more DHT as they get older (past the 20’s), even though produce less testosterone? Do men develop more DHT receptor sites when older or produce more 5AR enzyme when older to convert testosterone to DHT? They don’t have these DHT receptor sites in the scalp when younger, just older? Like a cancer that just appears after so many cell divisions and the genes reach a certain point? LOL, well just wondering why men have more DHT (hormone) when older if produce more testosterone when younger, I’m sure a lot of other people would be interested in that information, Thank you very much for any info or sites that may have info!

You ask a very good and interesting question. You sound like you are just about to take a biochemistry exam. Unless I am mistaken, DHT levels will correspond with testosterone levels. Generally, less testosterone (an aging problem) should produce less DHT. The reason why you see balding men who are older (when testosterone levels are relatively lower than their younger years) is that it is likely a late expression of the genes that affect hair loss. On a counter note, most balding men will report that their hair loss began in their late teenage years (when their testosterone levels were the highest).

My Hair Disappears At Night! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have minor hair loss, but it happened and is still happening during a long period of time. Last winter, i realized there was hair loss on my hair line. I have this skin condition, but my skin doctor told me that it wouldn’t make my hair disappear. I’m 15, and I don’t know what this is. Most of my family (that know about it) say that my hair isn’t disappearing but this is MY body and i know what changes are happening. Now, i have once inch of hair missing from my hair line, more hair above my ears, and the back of my neck. When my hair disappears, it does at night and sometimes after i take a shower. My hair grew very rapidly over a short period of time, and i don’t know what this is. Please, help me.

If what you are saying is that you lose hair at night because you see it on the pillow, you should do a hair count on those hairs you find. The average person loses about 100 hairs per day and regrows that number from below the skin. If you calculate this out, you will see that in three years, the 100,000 hairs on the head (losing them 100/day) will recycle. Get a good doctor who understands hair and teenagers and go about the analysis properly.

Will I Go Bald? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear doctor, I understand that you’re a busy person, but I’d really appreciate if you took the time to anwser a few questions. I’m a 19 year old male; full head of hair without any signs of balding. My father and my paternal grandfather both have thick hair with no signs of balding. However, I once read an article about baldness being inherited from one’s mother and my maternal grandfather has no hair at all. Does this mean that I should be worried about going bald? I guess all men lose at least some hair due to old age; around what age would you say that natural balding starts to occur?

The leaning to one’s mother’s genetics is 51/49%. You probably won’t inherit any balding based upon what you told me, but if I am wrong, you will see in in your mid-20s or later.

Head Fungus for Over a Decade – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

my best friend has a head fungus. she is 32 and as had it since she was about 13. she went to the doctor a couple of times back then but quit because she didn’t want her classmates to see medicine in her hair. i am trying to get her to go back to see a doctor but she thinks it is to late. so my question is if you have a head fungus for 14 years with no treatment can you get rid of it? please help!

Clearly this requires a medical doctor to make a diagnosis and then start a treatment program. If your friend does not want to do this and follow the advice given to her, I can not help her over the internet. Even if I could, I would need to examine her, test hair scalp for fungus and make a diagnosis first.

My Hair Regrows When I Leave the US – Hair Loss Returns When I Am in the US – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,

I am in US for last 10 yrs. My hair is thinning along the center partition on top of my head. This happened since I have been living in US. When I went to my country for an year two years back, I felt my hair regrowing and getting better. Please suggest the cause and treatment for this. also I feel some scalp pain all along the portion where I am experiencing the hair thinning.

Thanks

Environmental factors can accelerate the hair loss. Your case is rather unusual and interesting. Stress can activate or accelerate hair loss/thinning. Ask yourself if living in America is more stressful. Diet is another important variable that is different in different countries. Lack of certain elements in your diet can cause hair loss, but that would take an extensive analysis to understand what you are eating in and out of the US and how they compare. There are also certain food ingredients in certain geographic areas that may help hair growth (maybe you have some cure to hair loss from your native country in the foods you eat there). Look back and see what you have done and eaten during the time you have been away that affected your hair loss and you may reverse-engineer it and come up with a new solution that we can all talk about.

will my hair grow back once i leave this place?

FoodI doubt junk food or bad water are the sources of your hair loss. You may have genetic male pattern hair loss. It doesn’t matter if your mother or father both have full heads of hair. The pattern of inheriting the hair loss gene is not readily predictable.

Hair Falling Out in Patches – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My hair is falling out in patches it’s been about a month now. I’m 54 years old. I’m really stress out right now. Will my hair grow back and should I cut it.

If it is really coming out in patches, it is not normal and may reflect some disease like ringworm, alopecia areata, etc… To make that diagnosis, see a dermatologist.
