Treatments for DUPA? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

You’ve wrote that minoxidil and finasteride may not be effective treatment for DUPA. What might be some of the more common treatments available to men suffering from this condition?

-Thanks

Unfortunately there is no medical treatment for DUPA (diffuse unpatterned alopecia). I have recently seen a patient with substantial reversal of DUPA on finasteride alone, but this is not what we normally see. For this young man, the reversal brought his hair back to almost normal fullness.

Hair Loss After Bump on Child’s Head – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello the question i have is about my six year old son. He fell and hit his head causing a large bump. After the swelling went down we noticed his hair fell out in the same spot. Is this normal and should we be concerned? I greatly appreciate any feed back.

Any trauma on the scalp skin can force hair follicles to enter the telogen (resting) phase. The telogen phase may last up to 6 months, so you should expect that your son start growing the lost hair back in about 3 to 6 months in that area. I am assuming that there is no laceration which caused a scar.

Tuberculosis and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

sir,
I have swelling in neck region lymph node from last three months. Positive for TB after FNAC test. Not yet taken medication. Doctors suspects extra pulmonary TB. Lungs are clear in
xray. I have hair loss. Is it just cuz of TB and will it be continue if i take medication regularly? Is it temporary or permanent hair loss? Or i regain hairs after treatment, cuz i have
no hereditary for hair loss in my family. i have very low density of hairs now. no bald spots but hairs density getting lower.

please help respond me soon

Before worrying about hair loss, you need to see a doctor (or continue seeing a doctor) to have your medical problems treated. Tuberculosis can manifest in many ways, which can include hair loss due to weight loss and chronic illness issues. If your hair loss is not genetic, it may be due to the stress on your body from the disease process, but if you add genetic hair loss on the disease problem, it will probably not come back. Generally you hair should return, but there is no guarantees and you do not have genetic hair loss compounding your problem.

From a historical perspective, hair loss was very common in the cities when TB ran wild. That was why a woman looked for a hairy man to qualify a man as a prospective husband. If a man lost his hair, the presumption was that they had TB and would probably die from it, not living long enough to provide family support for the long term.

Female Patient Still Hasn’t Grown Back Her Hair After Chemotherapy 3 Years Ago – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

(female) I am a 45 year old lung cancer survivor. I had chemothrapy and 2 surgeries. The chemo was taxotere and cisplatin this was 3 1/2 years ago.i lost all of my hair including eyebrows and eyelashes as of today my hair on my head has not grown fully back nor the rest of my body. The dermatologist I have visited do not know what to make of it.

Thanks

Congratulations on surviving lung cancer! Unfortunately, hair loss from chemotherapy is common. While your hair should return/grow back to its original state, sometimes it takes much longer (over a year) or for reasons unknown hair does not grow back to its original state. If your hair has not come back in over 3 years, there is a good chance it will not return. There are no known medications or treatments to grow back that hair.

When Transplanting, Do You Plan for Future Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear docter, great work on the website

I have a question concerning the long term results of a hair transplant patient and how you look at the long term when you transplant them.

Do you take in account how much balder the patient will be, in other words, if you continue balding after a transplant will it still look like a natural balding progression? Or will it not matter because if the patient is unhappy ten+ years later you know they’ll be coming back for another transplant.

thank you

You asked a very important question. If you have been following this site you would know the importance of the Master Plan when planning for hair transplant surgery. While it is difficult to predict how much hair you will lose, proper examination such as a miniaturization study and careful medical history will clue the doctor into the patient’s possible future hair loss. With that information, the surgeon can plan the surgery accordingly, which includes eventually transplanting into where the hair is miniaturized (planning for the inevitable hair loss) when balding occurs in that area. The patient may choose or need surgery in the future, but these are the things the doctor and the patient must review before the surgery.

Are Thinning Temples Part of a Mature Hairline? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Dr. Rassman,
I have been on propecia for close to 3 months now, and in that time I seemed to have noticed the temples thinning more than they ever had. The hair above the sideburns (that comes to a point above the eybrow) is also seemingly thinning. I notice much more blonde hair in these areas, yet I am a fairly dark haired person. Could this be just evidence of a maturing hairline (although I feel it is going beyond that) or could it be evidence of a shed from propecia? Or could it have probably happened anyway and hopefully propecia is slowing it? I’m sure you can’t tell me for sure, but any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

Block Quote

There is no way to answer to your question without a good physical exam, which includes a miniaturization study. To better assess the hair loss you are noticing we would need to compare your miniaturization state before you started Propecia and your miniaturization state now. Moreover, Propecia is not reported as effective on your frontal hairline and your temples (although I am not sure that I believe that it is completely ineffective). Thus, your hair loss may just be a part of your male pattern hair loss or your maturing hairline (depending on your particular pattern).

Balding, Obesity, and Heart Disease in Young Men – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is there an association between balding, obesity and heart disease in young men? The following link is to an abstract of the article that shows that such an association is probable.

Previous investigations have revealed an association of androgenetic alopecia (AGA), especially in younger subjects with severe early-onset AGA, with ischemic heart disease.

Iron Deficiency Caused Follicle to Die? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have been told my a so called hair expert that hair that fell out from iron deficiency could have caused the hair follicle to atrophy and die. What is the chances of this happening. My hairloss lasted about 4 months. Thanks

I would need to know whether you are male or female and if the iron deficiency resolved (you commented that it ‘lasted about 4 months’). Generally, if you are iron deficient, reversing the process should bring the hair back after a hair cycle has occurred. I do not know enough about your history to answer your questions more specifically, though.

My Twin and I Lost Leg Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’ve been reading some of the postings about hair loss on calf. You commented about not knowing age & also about role of DHT & hair being one of the benefits.

With that in mind, here’s another one for you. My fraternal twin & I have both lost the hair on the calves of our legs. Happened in late 30s-early 40s. All the males on father’s side are pretty hirsute, as we are. In my case, I have all the hair I’ve ever had everywhere else, including the tops of my feet and toes! I’m a little thin on top, too, as is my brother. But, I’m also now dealing with rampant eyebrow hair growth & hairy ears needing trimmed. I have pitting edema of lower calves as well, but normal warmth and good pedal pulses. What do you think?

Thanks!

Pedal edema (swelling of the feet) usually reflects some medical problem. With swollen feet, there may be a connection. Does your fraternal twin have pedal edema? Good chance that there is some genetic cause, but I am stumped.

13 Year Old Panics About Hair Loss! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am a 13 year old girl and have a perm from curly to straight and it would be very nice of you if you would pleeeease help me. I went on a winter vacation with my family for 3 days and the second day I went to the pool with out a cap. After a while I went up to my hotel room by myself and blow dried my hair. After the vacation was over I went home to wash the chlorine out of my hair with V05 conditioner and shampoo. After I washed it, I blow dried my hair some more.

Now, every time I comb my hair a whole chunk of hair comes out of the back of my head. This has been happening every single day for 3 weeks. I only noticed when my hair dresser told me it looked like a short boys hair cut. I started to cry for weeks. I did not want to go out in public, especially to school where my friends had better looking hair than I did. I felt jealous and lonely because a few of them had longer hair than me and it was straight without a perm. I don’t really want to show my natural hair because it’s crazy looking so if you would pleeeeease help to grow it back faster i’ll feel much better again and take better care of it. Thank you so much.

I know it feels horrible when you think your hair is a mess, but the only thing you should do at this point is wait it out and keep from perming your hair until it all grows back. Hair grows at 1/2 inch per month so it will grow back in time.
