Mixed Connective Tissue Disease and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My husband was diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease. He is 55 and is currently on prednisone (20mg) and celcept. He is seeing a rheumatologist who is trying to get him off prednisone with very little success. All other medications he has tried are causing severe side effects. He has been in the hospital 3 times since being diagnosed 5 months ago. His hair is thinning and we told his doctor but he has not said much about what to do about it. His disease is still not managed. We would like to get a second opinion. Anyone in San Francisco area or bay area?????

Unfortunately, I do not have any suggestion for you on treatment. Autoimmune diseases can have hair loss as a side effect and the use of steroids can also be a cause. Ask your doctor for a second opinion. For the readers that wish to learn more about this rare disease, please see MayoClinic.com.

Hair Loss InformationScalp Pain and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have shedding/thining all over my top of head with no family history of MPB. I have an intense burning sensation in my scalp that is very painful. I have gone to three different dermatologists who have perscribed topical steroids and still no relief of pain or from thinning. Nerologists perscribed amitriptyline for the pain but is has worked very little. Is there any rational explaination for this hairloss and pain?

Head painYou need to be evaluated by a hair specialist to determine the pattern and type of your hair loss. You may be experiencing a typical pattern baldness that is aggravated by other medical disorders. Some medical conditions such as iron deficiency or skin inflammatory conditions can accelerate the hair loss in pattern baldness. If this is the case for you, treatment of the underlying cause may stop or slow down your hair loss. The next step is to get to the root of your underlying problem. I think your primary care doctor and dermatologist are the best people to start with.

Hair Loss InformationNew Shampoo Causing Thinning in Teen? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 16 year old male and I’ve been noticing since about a week or two ago I’ve started losing much more hair than usual. When I take a shower, a lot more hair collects on the drain than ever used to before and when I comb my hair at least 10 hairs fall out. I’ve always had very thick and strong hair and it’s worrying me. I also notice that each hair that’s falling out is very thin and weak-looking. I have been using Head and Shoulders Intensive Care for a couple months now. Do you think it could be the cause?

Block Quote

ShampooI doubt that the shampoo causes your hair loss, but the underlying factors that make people use the shampoo may do that. Head and Shoulders shampoo is used for seborrheic dermatitis, which is an inflammatory disorder of the skin. This condition can possibly initiate hair loss or accelerate the loss due to the other causes.

Hair Loss InformationCan My Traction Alopecia Reverse? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

i’m a 15 yr old girl and i have traction alopaecia-i have really long hair and i’m not allowed to cut it so i braid it really tightly every day- if i change my hairstyle, will it grow back?

Block Quote

Traction alopecia may not reverse if it has been a chronic problem. Some hair may grow back, but there is no guarantee. If you are worried about hair loss from traction alopecia the best advice is to stop the offending cause (stop braiding your hair). Your circumstance may not be as easy as words of advice, but at the least do not braid your hair so tightly.

Hair Loss InformationDemodex Folliculorum and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I recently read about Demodex folliculorum. From what I understand it is a parasite that lives in the hair follicles and feeds off the sebaceous glands. I have also read reports stating that this infestation may cause diffuse hair thinning.

Is this true? How common is this condition, and how is it treated?

Block Quote

Demodex folliculorumDemodex folliculorum is a tiny mite, less than 0.4 mm long, that lives in pores and hair follicles. It is usually seen on the nose, forehead, cheek, and chin, and often in the roots of your eyelashes. Demodicids look like worms. People with oily skin, or those who use cosmetics heavily and don’t wash thoroughly have the heaviest infestations, but it is not uncommon for adults to carry a few demodicids.

Follicular inflammation produces edema and results in easier epilation of the eyelashes. Loss of lashes may happen when there are abundant mites located near one hair follicle. Demodex are harmless and don’t transmit diseases, but large numbers of demodex mites may cause itching and skin disorders, referred to as Demodicosis.

Diagnosis is through a high index of clinical suspicion. This condition usually doesn’t cause any symptoms. If symptomatic, patients may experience itching and local (not diffuse) hair loss. Treatment for the symptomatic cases include cleansing the area and even antibiotics for severe cases.

Hair Loss InformationDoes Too Much Sex Contribute to Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Over the past year my hair has been falling out dramatically. To the point that it is now visible. However i dont believe it is balding. It is thinning evenly all over (not normal male pattern balding). I have had a thyroid test, negative, and am now on propecia. It has been 5 months and my hair has only gotten thinner. it did seem to stop for a while, but now is just as bad if not worse. If propecia isnt working does that mean you are not balding and you have some other medical condition? My father didnt start balding until 40,and both grandfathers still have alot of hair on top.

Also. Does to much sexual activity lead to balding i.e. sex/masturbation

thanks

If sex and masturbation lead to balding then we would all be bald!

Propecia (finasteride) takes 6 months to 12 months to see its benefits. At only 5 months it may be too early to tell if it is working for you. More importantly you should have had a diagnosis of male pattern hair loss before taking Propecia to make sure it was the right medication for your condition. You cannot draw a medical conclusion without having all the medical facts. It is impossible to answer your questions without a complete medical and physical examination including a miniaturization study.

At the least take comfort in knowing that your “sex/masturbation” life is safe from the effects of balding.

Hair Loss InformationHair Loss and Scalp Acne – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

HELLO,
I am 37-year old woman from Finland.I have suffered from severe acne on my scalp and hairloss ever since my mother died suddenly on 1994. It was a horrible shock to me,and soon after that my face became infected with pimples as well as my scalp.I got some antibiotics and it helped to the face but not to scalp.During past years I have spent a lot of money to different kinds of shampoos and liquids, with no results. The only thing that helped for a while was Roaccutan which I took for about six months. After I stopped, hair became again very oily and the scalp irritated.Lately I have tried Revivogen, Tricomin and Thymuskin and the result is…..hair gets oily and sticky. My question is,is there any solution to this problem and what products should I use every day in able to keep my hair and scalp clean?? I recognize that when I’m stressed, the problem gets worse. Please answer!!

It seems you have tried many products for your acne and hair loss problems for over 10 years. Although you have tried many products, you have not indicated that you were ever evaluated by a qualified medical doctor. If you have seen a doctor for your problems, I do not believe I can offer any significant help. Hair loss and stress are closely related and there is no definitive cure or answer. Unfortunately, acne and hair loss is a difficult combined problem to address.

Hair Loss InformationCould Cleaning Products Be Causing Female Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

25 year old spanish female losing small amount of hair. She has no bald spots hair is thick but seems like to much of it is falling out. She works as cleaning lady. Could it be the cleaning fluids she’s around everyday. thank you

It is possible that some cleaning products have chemicals in them that can cause hair loss. Most people don’t breathe these directly and it might take substantial doses of these chemicals to produce the toxic effects from those ingredients.

Hair Loss InformationI Think I Have Triangular Alopecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello:
I am 19 years old, male. I have been strugling with what, I have recently found, must be Congential Temporal Triangular Alopecia. I’ve had a receded hairline, mainly on the sides, including the temples, for as long as I can remember. My hair has always been full enough in the widow’s peak, front, portion that I could style it to (try to) hide it. (I feel like I am getting to old for that now though, I’m going to have to admit my terrible hairline exists eventually.) But it’s always been there; in fourth grade the girl I sat next to in class first told me that I had a receding hairline. Since then, it has been un uphill battle. I’m now a freshman in college, and my hair is getting to me more than it ever has before. It’s hard to see most of my classmates enjoying their youthful hair, and I’m left with a hairline worse than most 50 year olds.

But, back to the condition. I have bald temples, more or less, on both sides. The right side seems to be a little worse than the left. As far as hair loss, I think I may have been experiencing it my whole life (I have always toweled off my body first when I get out of the shower, or else I will get little hairs, from my head, all over my body,) but I can’t be sure as to the extent, since I have nothing to compare it with. I have never had hairloss come in patches, though. And I don’t know if I am actually losing my hair, or if it’s just my naturally bad hairline playing tricks on me. I know you are going to suggest that I see a physician to find out whether or not I am experiencing genetic balding, which I will do, but my concern now lies in the condition itself. I haven’t been able to find out much about it. I am also interested in treatment options. I have considered, later down the line, maybe transplating some hair to my temples so my hairline doesn’t go back like a V and STRAIGHT down at the sides (like it does now). I have included pictures, but I ask that you do NOT publish them, I’m sure you can understand why. Thank you so much for your time; I have been struggling with this for so long alone, and it feels great to have someone knowledgable on the subject to ask questions of.

Thanks again

As per your request, I have not published the photos you included with your email. Thank you for sending them though, as it is a big help when answering questions like this.

If what you have is indeed triangular alopecia (it looks that way to me), hair transplantation is a good option. I would want to know if you have any miniaturization anywhere else in your scalp. You could also have genetic balding that is not seen in your photographs, and it may not yet appear at your present age. If you have genetic balding as you get older, then you may not have enough hair (supply / demand issue) to follow back the further hair loss. Am I correct to assume that the triangular alopecia shown here in the photographs you sent to me is stable now?
