Water Quality Causing My Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i recently moved to new york, and i noticed a difference in the water quality when showering. the water seems to take longer to rinse of soap and shampoo. after a few days, i notice my hair was much more prone to breaking and falling out. when it falls out, i notice even the root of the hair has fallen. i am 19 years old and have very good genetics for a thick head of hair. i have already switched to a thickening shampoo (l’oreal) and plan on gettinga shower filter.

whats happening and how can i resolve it?

Some parts of the country have hard water, which contains a high mineral content and impacts the way soap suds. Water softeners are commonly sold in those parts of the country where the water is hard. For more on hard water, see Wikipedia.

Don’t jump to conclusions about the water, but you may be correct to change your shampoo and probably use a conditioner.

70 Year Old Woman Just Started Thinning – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr. Rassman,

I just found your web site an hour ago. I have a very specific question:

My hair has been thinning at the hairline (above the forehead and can see through to the scalp) Thinning last 2-3 years. The sides above my ears have thinned out also. I am 70 years old, still wear long hair (my previously feminine crowning “glory.”) I take estrogen-all appropriately prescribed by my gyne. Good homeostasis with estrogen!

Why is this happening? My late daddy was bald at age 30. Any genetic connection to me. Anything safe I can use to stop any progression. I notice people look up at my forehead hairline so I know they see the same thinning scalp which concerns me.

Yes, Dr. Rassman, it is just as important at age 70 to be beautiful as age 20. :-)
Won’t you respond to me?

I totally agree with you that “it is just as important at age 70 to be beautiful as age 20”.

Several question and answers are posted about female pattern baldness in the Female Hair Loss category of this site.

You need to be seen by a hair specialist for confirmation of the diagnosis and pattern of your baldness. Women with baldness need to be tested for some medical conditions that may cause hair loss; among those, thyroid disease, iron deficiency, hormonal and autoimmune diseases. Some of these conditions can be easily treated and the process of baldness may be reversed.

You need to know that women do not necessary follow the phenotype of baldness of their male ancestors. Unlike male pattern baldness, female hair loss is generally more diffuse with no preserved area of hair that could be used for transplant. That is why for a typical female pattern baldness, hair transplantation is rarely indicated. Minoxidil is the only FDA-approved medication that will treat hair loss in women, but first you must be sure that the hair loss is not medically induced.

Woman with Bumps and Hair Loss on Top of Scalp – Balding Blog

I’ve read some of the cases and almost feel that I may have “traction alopecia”. I’m a black female with balding hair for over 20 years, it’s been a very very slow process as you can see. But the top of my head is extremely thin and I have a quarter sized dead spot which has no hair at all. I get tiny bumps, razor bumps, bleeding if massaged on occasions. My hair is very short. It will grow on the sides, but the top front to the crown is stuggling for survival. Any advise? Thank you!

You need to be examined by an expert. Since you indicated you were in New Jersey, Dr. Robert Bernstein in Fort Lee, NJ could help you.

My Horrible Self-Image is Crippling Me – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m a 19-year-old male. Dr., my life is constantly affected by my high hairline. I literally don’t go out as often as I used to, I hesitate to get a job, and my self-image is at an all-time low. I’m OCD to begin with, so I constantly mess with my hair every time I see a mirror (or any reflective surface). This constant brushing and twisting of my fingers through my hair, undoubtedly, is a huge factor. Although, my parents used to call me “pumpkin-head” even as a young child. I’ve always had a big head/forehead. I’ve also had 2 instances of major crash-diets in the last year and 1/2, (one of them being brought-on by adderall) which is obviously not helping either.

My mother’s side has high hairlines, but they don’t go bald. It just recedes to a certain point. So my hair is thick, but still embarrassing. Ever since seeing a special about the daily treatment of beautiful and ugly people on some show, and how your looks affect the way you’re treated on a daily basis, I’ve been utterly terrified about the way I look.

Suggested treatments? And a very (General) price-estimate of each?

First, with your overall description, you should seek psychological help. There are medications that may help. Addressing a high hairline with a wide forehead can be evaluated by a hair restoration expert, but at your age (because of an unknown balding pattern that might develop) it is not a good idea to undergo a surgical procedure. Still, get an in-person opinion from a doctor. One can not price out costs until the problem is defined. But with a poor self-image, your primary concern might be what is inside your head not outside of it.

Hair Falls Out When Running My Hand Through It – Balding Blog

I’ve noticed recently when I run my had through my hair that there will be a few single hairs on my hand. I don’t know if this is a sign of going bald or just natural? My older brother is bald, but started going bald when he was about 23 or 24, I’m 27 and this is the first I’ve noticed hair falling out. I don’t see hair falling out in clumps, but could this be an early sign of balding?

Hair loss in a 27 year old man may start the way you are telling me about. You need to get your hair examination and mapped for miniaturization and that will tell you if you have genetic balding in its early stage.

Kidney Stones and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

hello doctor,
i’m a 27 yrs old Sri Lankan woman and have always had thin, fine and flyaway hair (no bald spots). In 2005, I went to Canada for a project and stayed there for a year. During this time, my hair fall was alarming. I came back to my home country in early 2006 and eventually learned that I had kidney stones, which could have been the reason for my hair loss. But that was a year back, and in the past 6 months I have become bald near the crown. I have been to so many dermatologist, but none are able to pinpoint a definite cause for my problem. One says it is telogen effluem, another says it’s just chronic dandruff, and an ayurvedic practitioner told me that it could be bcos of aggravated sinusitis. I am simply lost. Everyday I lost about 100 hairs. Please help… what should I do now?

You need to be examined by an expert. I would doubt dandruff, kidney stones, or sinusitis as a cause. Sounds like you have a problem that under good medical care, a diagnosis can be understood.

Nitrix from GNC and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr Rassman,

I recently saw a neurologist because of fainting, everything came back good, however she did say (im paraphrasing and ill try to get the technical terms right) that my red blood cells were very mildly high & that this was normally seen with people who live in the mountains not at sea level and that its cause is possibly due to high testosterone levels and then i told her that I am taking creatine and nitrix (both purchased from GNC)and I spoke with a rep from gnc and he said the nitrix could have a link to increasing testosterone levels. my question is can the high testosterone levels possibly cause hair loss?

Thank you

High testosterone levels may very well cause hair loss in those genetically prone to male pattern balding.

Would a Testicle Infection Cause Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

no family history.except half brother.(we have same mother.)he went bald early from the crown first.no one else on mothers side is bald at all.could infection in testicle produce high testosterone. And my head has been itching alot throughout the day for a couple months now.would rogaine damage what i have there if i tried it just to ease my self conciensce?

Block Quote

Norwood Class 4AI do not think that your testicle infection should be the cause of high testosterone or your hair loss. If you have a high testosterone level, I would want to know why. Your hair loss pattern from the pictures you sent show an incomplete Norwood Class 4A pattern. That is fairly extensive in your frontal area. Rogaine may help, but finasteride (Propecia) would probably be better for you. Usually frontal hair loss does not respond to medications and only wigs or hair transplants will give you the coverage that looks full. African hair is generally better than Caucasian hair because of the curly nature of it (it wants to cover better). If you are in California, consider visiting me at either my San Jose office or my Los Angeles office.
