Extreme Weather Change and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 24yrs old female and last night my husband spotted a bald spot on back left of my head. Its about a quarter size n pink in colour and it still has 3-4 hair in that area. Now i am worried about this as this was not their long ago. I had been living around in different environment like extreme hot and cold as i was an air hostess. And i am an indian. Reason for telling you all this is my husband asked one of his friend and she told him that one of the reason can be the weather initially in hot weather and now in cold areas. Please suggest me something. Can this be rectified. i want my hair to grow fast. Please suggest me something.

Weather does not cause hair loss. We have something called asynchronous hair growth, which means that hair does not shed, but grows throughout the year. Animals will shed in the summer and grow hair in the winter. If you have lost hair in a spot on your scalp, the two most common causes are alopecia areata and ringworm. You will need a good doctor to evaluate it.

Hair Loss InformationHair Loss in Teenage Girl After Atkins Diet? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I need urgent help! I am a 15 year old female. These past months, i noticed my hair has been falling out dramtically. Every morning when i wake up i see hair on my pillow, about 10 or so. As the day goes by i see hair of mine on my clothing and so on. Every where i walk a hair comes out. When i brush it, it’s even worse,a large amount of hair is on the brush. It’s never been this bad before, and i don’t know what to do! Not to long ago i had gotten on a diet. (Atkins) It was good for about a month or so and i started going back to my old habits and not eating right. I’m not sure if that would be the case? Crash diet? Maybe it would be genetic. My mother also suffers from hair loss, and so does my grandmother. But they started loosing hair at an older age. Is it a genetic thing? I need help & answers please!

Dieting can cause hair loss, particularly crash dieting. You should see your doctor and go over your overall health issues, though. I couldn’t say that the Atkins diet is the cause for your hair loss, as the dieting may be completely unrelated. It is common and normal to lose 100-150 hairs per day.

Losing Hair At Nape of Neck – Balding Blog

I have had hair loss in the nape area of my head for the last 3 or 4 years, my hair falls out completely down to the scalp it seems to happen around the same time each year but the symptoms are itching, burning and tingling. the hair grows back but falls out all over again. is this a sign of beginning Alopecia? Im 27 years old

I have seen people lose neck hair, but I have never heard of it cycling every year. I am sorry, but there’s really not much I can offer you, particularly without examining your scalp and seeing what you’re seeing. The word “alopecia” means “hair loss” so the question is not not precise for a cause of the hair loss. Various adjectives are used, such as traction alopecia (caused by pulling on the hair) or androgenic alopecia (caused by genes).

Today Show Tells How Women Can Stop Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Every bit of information educates the public. Interesting reading.

From the article —

We normally have, on average, 100,000 hairs on our scalp. And as evinced by our changing hair lengths, roots and visits to our hairdressers, those hairs grow; in fact, 90 percent of our hair is actively growing at any given time. Hair is the second fastest growing tissue in our body after (I’d love for you to guess) … bone marrow.

Major Simultaneous Stresses, Low Iron, and Female Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am a 40 year old woman. In the past two years, my menstrual cycle has become much heavier and longer. Since April of this past year, I have had several stressors, one after the other, that usually don’t occur this simultaneously(i.e my 4 yr old son had surgery, my house flooded, and my husband was going thru some real medical issues). In July-Aug (within a 2 week timeframe), I lost a large amount of hair from the top middle-left side of my scalp. I just had a full CBC and hormone level count done and my iron was just a line below normal. I am now on an iron therapy. My doc thinks it could be iron deficiency coupled with a lot of unusual stress. Does this sound familiar to you?

Yes, it does sound familiar. Stress can certainly cause hair loss and getting this stress under control will generally result in the hair growing back within a year, though this is not a guarantee. Adding this stress to a pre-existing iron deficiency does sound like a recipe for hair loss in a woman.

I Had My Hair Permed Twice in One Day, Now Its Falling Out! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am 24 years old female. I had my hair permed in August and I started losing my hair after a month. before the perming I had very healthy virgin hair.(nothing done to them ever no coloring nothing).I am very worried about my hair I am loosing every day and they just fall without my touching them. I am getting split ends as well. Another thing they had to perm my hair twice because it did not work first time at all. please tell me what do you think is going on

You may have damaged your hair with the perms, or maybe it is just a coincidence and you have some cause of hair loss that requires a doctor’s examination. Unfortunately, there’s not much I can do for you without an exam. Female hair loss can be quite difficult to find a cause for. I suggest you make an appointment to see a dermatologist in your area.

Hair Loss in 74 Year Old Woman – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, I am a 74 year old female and my hair has started to fall out. My scalpe is itchy red and flakes alot. I have had this condition most of my life but have always had a good head of hair, only recently has the condition got worse and the hair started to come out. Is this just old age ???

Block Quote

I wish I could give you a clear answer, but I honestly have no clue! You need an evaluation by a physician in-person who can ask pertinent questions and conduct a proper physical examination. I suspect if you had this condition most of your life, it probably is not related to your age.

I’m a Woman and Not Having Children — Can I Use Propecia? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am a woman in my late 40s and have thinning hair and a hairline that has receded somewhat due to menopause and discontinuance of HRT (I think).

Would you recommend Propecia for me? I will not be having children — is there data related to breast cancer and Propecia? Or, what is your opinion of the new laser combs or devices-specifically the X5 Laser from Spencer Forrest which appears to be superior to the Laser Max comb? Also, do you know anything about “virtual hair” — a membrane similar to your scalp custom-created for the client, with real hair attached, and glued onto the scalp? Of course, as the hair grows, the glue becomes dislodged, but it was featured on “Good Morning America” and looks terrific — so natural. Please, any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated

I would not recommend Propecia (finasteride) for a woman unless there were high androgens present on her blood testing, and even then I would have to think about it. This is provided that she could not get pregnant and there was no breast cancer gene present.

With regard to Virtual Hair, anytime you attach something to your scalp, it can produce traction hair loss… which could become permanent. And I’d rather not comment on special customized lasers.

Can Allergy Make Me Lose My Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m an 18 year old female with such thinning hair there is not much left, i’ve been to two different dermatologists and many a few doctors i’ve had every blood test done to come up with a solution, multiple times and yet the most common response is, everything is normal but we can prescribe you a medicine that may help. there is definitely something wrong but nobody can tell me what it is. i take vitamins, healthy diet, drug free. possible solution or diagnosis? i’ve heard possible allergy could do it but what could i be allergic to? ever heard of this?

I do not believe that general allergies can cause hair loss. Allergy to topical dyes and such may cause hair loss, however. Without seeing you and examining you though, I can not do anything. You have already seen two doctors and you must press them for an answer.

Minoxidil Helped, But I’ve Stopped It Since Becoming Pregnant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Sir,

I have been diagnosed with androgenic alopecia a couple of years ago, during which I have been on 5% minoxidil. I am 32. THis has helped, but now I am pregnant and of course, I discontinued the use of it. On the recommendation of my dermatologist, I used Thymuskin product for up to the 8th week of my pregnancy, but discontinued that as well, as advised by my Obgyn. I have noticed that in the first trimester, I lost a lot of hair, which can be either the cause of discontinuing minoxidil and/or hormonal changes in pregnancy, I guess. Now I am in the 2nd trimester and I am not losing a lot of hair, however, the hair is not that shiny and it seems to be thinner. Even though pregnancy should be a good period for the hair, I also read that pregnancy can trigger such hair loss in women with AGA that it sometimes is irreversible (on the frontotemplar area). I am of course extremely worried because I have experienced an improvement with minoxidil, but now with pregnancy I am afraid everything will go away and especially be irreversible on the front part (where my hair looks worst, to be honest). I am especially afraid of the post partum and breast feeding period, as I have read that then increased shedding will occur. Is there anything I can do now already during pregnancy to work against this or can you give me a word of consolation at least :).

Thank you very much for your reply

Focus on your pregnancy and your baby. Hair changes do occur in pregnancy and much of it reverses after the baby is born. The recent hair loss does sound like minoxidil withdrawal.
