Norwood Class 3 Hair Loss in Women – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Norwood Class 3Male pattern balding is thought to only affect males and rare indeed is the female with this type of balding, according to popular belief. Yet, I have seen some relatively young females (in their twenties at most) with a hairline resembling a Norwood Class 3. What is this about? Perhaps I should buy myself a set of spectacles, or is it really true that females may develop male pattern balding to a certain degree?

Many women get a very thin corner that develops over time. The hair is miniaturized, but most often not lost. It grows slowly and rarely bothers the women. It has been suggested that women with this corner thinning, may have some form of genetic balding like the Class 3 males with corner recession.

Hair Loss from Braids? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I washed my hair one day after pulling out braids. I went to my personal hairdresser to get my hair redone only to be told “Honey you know you have a bald patch” then she proceeded to rub it with her finger. It was as smooth as could be. It now has a few strains of hair and i have bought things specifically described for hair loss near to the neck. It itches a the bottom of the spot. Just tell me what exactly to do please cause it really bugs me out.

You describe a condition known as traction alopecia, where hair follicles are permanently damaged with constant traction (in your case braids). That area may never grow hair back. You need to see a hair specialist (a good hair transplant surgeon may help), but you should wait for 6 months to see if it does grows back.

Hair Loss InformationRogaine Foam for Women? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I went to the doctor yesterday to address the on-going issue with my hair loss ( i am 29 and have been experiencing this on and off of the last 12 years) and he recommended rogaine but the 5% foam. even though its not for women. I called rogaine and they pretty much said that if the doctor said i should use it then i should.

Im just concerned because i havent read of alot of women using it. I go in for blood work in two weeks to rule out anything serious ( ie iron deficiency, thyroid issues etc). But im just a bit concern as to why women can’t use the foam.

Thanks

The 5% solution of minoxidil for women or men are just the same. The women’s version has an alcohol base (easier to style), while the men’s has an oil base (harder to style). I generally recommend 5% minoxidil for all my patients (both men and women). The foam is better for effectiveness and styling. Women can use the Rogaine Foam.

Using Hair Dye After Chemotherapy – Balding Blog

In April, 2007 my wife completed chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkins Lymphpoma (R-CHOP Protocal) Her hair began to grow back after her 4th of 6 treatments and was coming in well. Once she had enough hair to color she went to a hair salon to have it colored. Realizing it was ridiculous to pay for the coloring for such little hair, she decided to use a store bought permanent color. She has done it twice since and after the last coloring her hair began falling out. She has spoken to the medical staff at her oncologist’s office and was told NOT to use “permanent” coloring but “temporary”. They acted as though she was nuts but no one ever told her not to. Anyway, she was also told it would come back.

Have you ever come across this situation before? Will it come back at a normal pace?

Thanks

We have answered similar questions in the past regarding hair dye causing hair loss, although not specifically about dying hair regrown after chemotherapy. The reality is that dye can cause hair loss by itself, as it can make the hair fragile. These substances can burn the skin and they can work their way through the follicle from the skin pore and burn each and every follicle causing damage. That is why professional hair dyes in the hands of professionals are the best way to have the process done. As your wife’s hair is in ‘recovery mode’ you must be extra careful. Your wife needs to wait a few months and should grow her hair back if there is no other condition causing her hair loss.

Going Through Menopause and Losing Pubic Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have been having thinning pubic hair for about a year, I am 59 and have gone through menopause, although I still have the hot flashes, just not as strong as they use to be. I take no horomones at all, I am just managing on my own. Could this problem be hormone related, or is alopecia as you sometime refer too? I have no other hair loss at all, I have always had very thick head hair and still do. What do you think? thank you

If the loss is just limited to your pubic area (or underarm area), then I would assume that it is hormone related. Many people feel fortunate to have thinning pubic hair in today’s culture. If it bothers you and you are healthy, hair transplants from the scalp to the pubic area is something that is available. We do a few of these each year.

Green Coffee Beans to Treat Female Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

From Scotland on Sunday:

Scientists Bill and Iain Forbes have been carrying out experiments on raw coffee beans after discovering they had properties which could stop women’s hair from thinning, a problem which affects 50% of women by the time they are 50.

Now, after signing a “six-figure” contract with the major high street chemist Boots, the duo’s product is expected to become a major seller when it hits the shelves next month.

Last week, Boots unveiled its Expert Hair Loss Treatment Spray for Women, which is said to improve the thickness of each individual hair and has been shown in trials to significantly increase hair growth.

The full article can be found here — Eureka! Father and son make hair grow with magic beans

While interesting, I really don’t know the value of green tea or green coffee beans, so it is difficult to comment. While both the green tea and coffee claim antioxidant properties, that should not produce hair growth. Claims are easy to make for herbal remedies, as the standards are not stringent for such claims. It just goes to show that there is a huge consumer demand for hair loss treatment products and it continues to be a buyer beware market. I doubt that the use of green coffee will do any good or produce any harm. If I see evidence to the contrary, I’ll reserve the right to change my opinion. In the meantime though, regardless of how much the contract they signed with Boots (a large pharmacy chain in the UK) was, it appears to be just more hype.

A quick Google search turned up a forum on HairLossHelp.com discussing this new product:

I Want a Hair Transplant, But I’m Prone to Forming Keloids – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i’m an 19 year old girl suffering from androgenetic alopecia. i’ve been losing much hair and tried everything(rogain 2%, hormone therapy) but didn’t see any major results. i’m considering of having FUE on my frontal hairline, the problem is, my skin is prone to forming keloids. I know that keloid will probably form on the donor area but is there any possibility at all that keloids will grow on my hairline??

Yes, you are at risk of forming keloids on your recipient area (frontal hairline), but the risk is low. In all of my years, I have never seen a keloid in the recipient area. At a medical meeting some years ago, we polled the audience of about 300 hair transplant doctors to ask them to raise their hands and tell us if anyone ever saw a keloid in the recipient area. No one raised their hands.

You must also consider that androgenic alopecia in a 19 year old female is very rare and make sure that you have the correct diagnosis along with realistic expectation of what you are trying to accomplish and the fullness that you are going to have from a transplant. In other words, you must weigh the risks versus the benefits and you absolutely need a diagnosis by a competent doctor.

Woman Picking at Sore Spots on Her Scalp – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

(female) I have very sore sporadic spots only on my scalp. If I pick at them it is agony. They are really tiny and have a little white head. Also if i rub my scalp with my fingertips little hard white bits come out like they were the hair follicles. Most disturbingly my hair is getting shorter, thinner and has become dry and extremely frizzy. I used to have beautiful long curly hair. I am so distressed. I feel so embarrased. I have just turned 40 also. Have you ever heard of anything like this.

You describe a condition known as trichotillomania.

From Wikipedia: Trichotillomania (TTM), or “trich” as it is commonly known, is an impulse control disorder characterized by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, facial hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows or other body hair.

There are support groups and learning centers such as Trich.org.

Hair Loss Information » Doctor Prescribed Spironolactone and Rogaine for My 19 Year Old Daughter – Balding Blog

I have a 19 year old daughter with thinning hair. She has been tested for thyroid issues which came back negative.

Her dermotologist has prescribed spironolactone 25 mg/2x day and rogaine treatments. I’m concerned about possible side effects especially at her age. Please advise. Thank you.

I personally do not go that route for reasons like you suggested. The evidence is not strong that it will have an impact unless there are clear hormonal elements that she is being treated for. Ask your/her doctor for more information. For previous posts about spironolactones, see here.
