Hair Loss After Total Hysterectomy – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I had a total hysterectomy 5 years ago. I immediately started HRT. I take Premarin and a testosterone cream. My beautiful thick hair is disappearing. It won’t stop thinning. What can I do?

Hormone Replacement Therapy can precipitate hair loss in genetically prone women. You might consult with the doctor who is prescribing the medications you are taking. The response to different medications vary with the person, so adjustments in the HRT may help.

Young Teen Girl Experiencing Major Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello. I have been experiencing excess hair loss, which is making me very stressed out. I am scared to brush and wash my hair that its so bad. I am only a 13 year old female, and I really do not want to go bald by the age of 14. Yes, I do have a full head of hair, and no, it is not getting thinner. My parents set me up an appointment with a very good dermatologist. Nobody, on both sides of my family, have any hair loss problems. Everyone has extremely thick hair, including me. I have a few questions though:

  1. I have experienced major vaginal yeast infections, so could this be the problem?
  2. Can puberty cause hair loss? If so, is it permanent or temporary?
  3. When you say hair loss can be temporary, how long is temporary?
  4. Can the Hair, Skin, and Nails vitamins treat hair loss?

Please pleaseplease please help me, sir. I can not force myself to have fun, when I know I am losing 150-160 hairs a day. I’M SCARED! HELP HELP HELP! :(
Thanks for your time, and have a good day Dr.

  1. Vaginal yeast infection is not a cause for hair loss.
  2. Puberty can trigger changes in hair character because hormones do influence hair thickness, but this report is unusual. I would rather look for other causes of your hair loss.
  3. Hair loss, if it is temporary, may return after a few months to a year as the hair cycles over the course of many months, but you must be healthy and I would first check out the various causes of hair loss in young women with your family doctor.
  4. Vitamins do not cure hair loss, but many supplement advertisers want you to think so.

You need to have a complete evaluation by a good family doctor as the cause of your hair loss most likely lies there.

Lowering African Female Hairline – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr. Rassman,

I’m a 24 year old female with African origin. I would like to lower my hairline through transplant. Would there be a problem for someone like myself with afro hair to get a hair transplant done? How much would it cost?

Women with African hair should not be a problem for hairline lowering procedures, providing there is no tendency to scarring. Costs of hair transplants will be about $6,000 (rough estimate) with possibly two procedures to accomplish the goals provided that the hair supply is adequate. The hairline lowering procedure costs can be found here and if any scar should show up, then transplants may be needed to address any widened scar.

Ambien and Female Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have been using ambien for like two years this past summer I got a bad color hair shed, broke off throughout. I got it cut to try to cut dead/damaged hair out and start over as of now my hair is thinning on the left side and it is sore., I have been wearing wigs to cover, Don’t know what to do I take more than the prescribed dose of the ambien because I have built up a tolerance. I also take a womens multi vitamin, ortho-tri BC and have a fairly balanced diet.I used to have long thick beautiful hair and I just want that back. What should I do first?

You should first see a good doctor and make sure there are no other medical conditions for your hair loss such as hypothyroid, low iron, etc. You history shows birth control pills, well known to cause hair loss. Female hair loss is very difficult to address, because there are so few treatment options. Get a thorough examination by your family doctor before going any further — then see a good dermatologist.

Female Hair Loss After Moving – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

(female)
Hi there.
Right after I moved to TX from CA, I’m experiencing a great amount of hair loss. I’m losing hair in patches all over my head. I went to see a doctor and he couldn’t find anything in my blood to indicate illness. Could water be the cause of my hair loss? IF no, what else could be the culprit for causing my hair loss? My diet is regular, no medications, no stress, and it does not run in the family.

If the hair loss is in patches, there is something wrong and you need to get a good opinion from a doctor. I would not think the water is causing your hair loss, unless there is something in your water that makes it different from anyone else’s tap water in California. I’m not sure what area of the state you’re in, but we are located in both San Jose and Los Angeles (Beverly Hills area) and you should consider a consultation. If you can’t make it to one of our offices, a good dermatologist should be able to determine what is happening to your head that is causing your patchy hair loss.

My Leg Hair Stopped Growing! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am 44 y/o and the hairs on my legs have stopped growing. Do you think that this is something to be concerned about? Is is possibly the start of menopause?

Thanks

Block Quote

I don’t believe that the loss of leg hair is a sign of menopause, but hair (even leg hair) does change as we age. One internet source about a lady who underwent surgically induced menopause, reported that there was loss of body hair immediately after the surgery. Also see Google Answers – Leg hair loss for an in-depth answer.

Percocet, Gabapentin, and Female Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I fractured my C4 vertebra 3 months ago and underwent 2 spinal fusion surgeries within one week. Subsequently I was on multiple medications for pain and muscle spasms (percocet, gabapentin). I have weaned myself off the meds; however, in the past week I have noticed significant hair loss. When I brush or even just run my hand through my hair, it’s coming out in small bunches. I have a good diet and am taking a lot of vitamins and flaxseed oil. What do you think is causing the hair loss and what can I do to stop it? I do not take birth control pills, btw. Thank you.

People who have had surgery and stress, can lose their hair. Add to that birth control pills in combination with the surgery, and there are two contributing factors. I would have a complete medical work-up to determine if there are other contributing factors. Female hair loss is often associated with a variety of medical conditions.

Using a Ceramic Ionic Blow Dryer and Flat Iron Daily – Balding Blog

I am a 46yr old african american fenale. I have thining hair and I am letting my hair go natural. The hair salon I attend uses a process where you sit under a steamer with the conditioner to build moisture and blows drys and flat irons your hair with a ceramic ionic blow dryer and flat iron. Since I am an active person I sweat and my hair converts back. The stylist says it is ok to use these items on a daily basis because it seals in moisture unlike the regular blow dryers and flat irons. Does this make sense? I don’t want to do any more damage. If this process is ok, do I need to wash my hair each time since it is sweaty? I’ve searched your site and can’t find anything addresee ceramic ionic tools. Thank you for considering my problem.

Heat treating your hair the way you do will cause damage to it. Is it permanent damage? Well, it could be. I would think that a good stylist learned how to balance the damaging elements for hair straightening. This is where the ‘art’ comes into play in what your stylist does. I can not comment on her explanation, but if what she is doing is working, then continue with her approach with caution.

Hair Loss from Depo-Provera in Just Weeks! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i have been on the depo shot for only like 5weeks and my hair has already thinned alot. I had thick hair and some of my length is even gone. What is a way to get rid of the effects ? Can i try a cleanser or something because i dnt want to be bald head!!!!

Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate injectable suspension) is a birth control medication used as one injection every 3 months. Interruption of hair growth or hair loss is among its reported side effects. You need to see your doctor to consider stopping this medication and discuss other methods of birth control. If you lost hair only as a result of this medication, you should expect to regrow your lost hair within 6 to 9 months after your last injection of Depo-Provera.

Hairline Lowering Questions – Balding Blog

hi, i’m a female with a high forehead. I want to do a lower forehead surgery. I have some questions about the surgery.

  1. will it be local anesthesia or will i be put into sleep.
  2. how long will it take to look normal after the surgery.
  3. will the scar be obviou during the recovery period?
  4. will people notice that i did a surgery if i go out one week after the surgery?
  5. do you have any recommendation for doctors in toronto area?

Thank you very much for your time.

I will answer your questions as if you mean the hairline lowering procedure through excisional surgery, and not hair transplantation.

  1. This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia with some sedation.
  2. The effects are immediate, although there is swelling for up to a week. There is a scar at the hairline, so if you have bangs you should use them to cover the hairline scar. These scars are usually detectable for a few weeks. A small number of people will develop a white scar at the surgical site which can easily be treated with a limited hair transplant.
  3. Yes, the scar may be obvious while healing, but most patients can cover it pretty well with their existing hair.
  4. It depends on your art of styling that you use to cover the incision area and the lower hairline. As I said above, the use of bangs is a good idea because the new lower hairline should be introduced slowly so that the change will be more transparent. In a hair transplant, the change is so slow that no one usually notices it, but with this more radical surgery the final results of the new hairline is instantaneous. If you want to pull the hair back, the incision could be seen.
  5. No, unfortunately I do not have a recommendation in Toronto. Check with a good plastic surgeon in your area. Look for recommendations online, I suppose.
