My Left Temple Thinned and Now I Have Scars After Using Head & Shoulders – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Im 20 yrs old guy and 2 weeks ago I saw the hair in my left temple looked fine. It’s thinning out really fast and I dont know what’s wrong. My hair in the left temple is thinning fast.I noticed this after getting head and shoulders. I used a comb to scrub my head with H&S (I tried to clean something out of my head) Could this be the cause? My temple thinned in a 2 week span. Also I notice I have about 2 scars in my left temple now.

Shampoo isn’t going to cause scars on your head. It’s possible that you had the scars, but they were covered by surrounding hairs and not noticeable.

If by “temples” you mean the corners of the hairline, the loss you’re describing sounds like a maturing hairline (particularly at 20 years old). Many people call the hairline corners the “temples”, even though the temple peaks are actually the points between your hairline and your ears.

How Much Exercise is Recommended if You Have Hair Loss Concerns? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman,

I understand that exercising may increase the amount of Testerone and possibly DHT. For someone concerned about hairloss what level of exercise is recommended? Personally I am on propecia, and I dry to drop a couple of pounds.

Normal exercise has nothing to do with hair loss or DHT that causes hair loss. If you wish (or do not wish) to exercise, do not correlate it with hair loss.

Hair Loss Information » Understanding Catch-up Hair Loss After Stopping Finateride – Balding Blog

My question is to do with ‘catch-up hairloss’ after quitting finasteride.

If DHT gradually destroys the hair follicle and finasteride protects the follicle by reducing DHT, then why would there be such a fast ‘catch-up’ hairloss after quitting finasteride?

My thinking is, say your follicles have 3 yrs left before DHT finally destroys them. Then you go on finasteride for 5 yrs before quitting, surely your follicles would then still have 3yrs left, much like weather proofing a wooden fence?

Good thought, but finasteride does not block 100% of DHT… and DHT may not be the only factor here. More importantly, as much as your logic may seem true or make sense, in the real world catch-up hair loss from cessation of finasteride does not work that way based on many patients we have observed. We all have an internal clock, and your follicles are still on that clock (call it the apoptosis clock) so that the clock’s time advances regardless of whether you are on finasteride.

We’re just observers to a body process we barely understand.

Workplace Stress Caused My Alopecia Areata – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Doctors

A while ago I wrote in with this question – Pea-Sized Bald Spot on Crown with Small Hairs in the Center

After visiting my doctor it turned out to be alopecia areata that was triggered by workplace stress I was going through at the time. The stress was relieved and the area grew back within a month.

My next question is unrelated though – when you look at a hair that has been shed, is there any difference between a white hair bulb and a dark hair bulb?

Thank you

In my humble opinion, alopecia areata is an auto-immune issue where your body attacks its own hair follicles (to put it simply) and it has been occasionally linked to stress as a precipitating factor. It may have been a triggering factor. Hair loss from alopecia areata often will grow back with time (with or without any intervention), but it may come unexpectedly at any time in the future.

Finally, there is no difference between white and black hair bulbs.

Traction Alopecia from Pushing Down on Hair? – Balding Blog

Hair bandCould a head band cause hair loss? I know the answer will probably be “if it pulls on the hair it may cause traction loss” which I understand, but I honestly don’t know if something like this has potential to pull on the hair.

Here is a photo of the item in question, it would be good to hear your thoughts on the possibility of traction loss: Photo

I guess another question is, since something like this pushes down on the hair, is traction possible from something pushing down on your head like this would? Thanks.

The band you are using does not appear tight. If that is correct, I would doubt that this would be a problem.

After Playing Sports in Freezing Weather, I’m Seeing Hair Loss – Balding Blog

Hello Doctor

I am a semi pro soccer player . Last week i had to play a couple of 90 minute outdoor games , running up and down in below zero temperatures and freezing north wind (no head cover allowed in soccer games ) . Ever since i think i notice more hair falling when showering or combing . Corellation or causation ? Permanent or temporary loss ?

I just returned from a trip from Antarctica. I didn’t notice any more bald people in the freezing weather down there. I do not believe your 90 minutes of soccer play and shower has any correlation with hair loss.

Teen depressionI am sorry that you are having a hard time with hair loss. Losing 20 hairs a day is very normal, as one can lose 100-200 hairs a day and this can be normal in many men. In its place new hairs are growing without you even noticing it to replenish the hairs that have fallen out.

If you have genetic androgenic hair loss, there are medications that can also help. Empower yourself with education and knowledge about hair loss. If there are other issues, speak with your parents, your counselors at school, your friends, or relatives. Someone will listen, so don’t give up. The problem may not be as large as it seems. Get a medical assessment to find out if you are really losing your hair.

Hair Loss InformationHepatitis B Vaccine and Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I just started the Hep B vaccine and am experiencing hair loss at 54. Will it grow back?? I’m very concerned because of my age.

Block Quote

All health care workers receive hepatitis B vaccine, yet health care workers are not at any increased risk for hair loss. What you may be experiencing may be coincidental or very rare.

I did find this quote from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases: “There have been rare reports of hair loss after hepatitis B vaccination, with the majority of individuals regrowing their hair (Wise, 1997). Studies are in progress to better quantify the possible slight risk of hair loss.

The Only Side Effect I’m Getting from Propecia is Needing Less Deodorant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman,

Hello and Good day.

I just wanted to say thanks to Dr. Pak. At 25, with only slight recession, Dr. Pak saved me a great deal of time and heartache by getting me on medication first. Believe me, I consulted other clinics and they were all too willing to transplant me. In addition, I saved a great deal of money by getting the generic drug instead of Propecia (NHI was the only clinic to offer this and save me money!)

I also wanted to quickly chime in on the whole Propecia side effects debate. To be clear, I am now 27 and healthy. Since Dr. Pak started me on Proscar a couple of years back I have had no negative side effects from the drug. Everything is normal.

The only side effect I have experienced since starting the drug (other than not losing hair)is a palpable decline in the amount of deodorant I have to use. What was one a daily routine is now limited to heavy exercise. Have you ever heard of something like this from any of your other patients?

Weird, huh? Thanks again!

Block Quote

Thanks for the kind words. Glad to hear the we also saved you money on your deodorant use. What you’re reporting is unusual, but I have heard of a similar side effect only a few times in the many years. It must be rare, along with reports like less body hair growth.

Syphilitic Alopecia – Balding Blog

How do you distinguish between Syphillytic Alopecia and DUPA Androgenic alopecia? I’m probably experiencing Andro Alopecia diffusely around my entire head but I just want to make sure. Is Syphillytic alopecia treatable? How do you test for it?

Thanks

In a very basic sense, physicians diagnose patients by taking a history and examining the patient face to face. In more recent years with the advent of the Internet, many self diagnose and run into conflicting information and/or scare themselves with wild diagnoses.

If you think you have syphilitic alopecia, diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA), androgenic alopecia (AGA), or any other form of alopecia, a good start is a visit to your doctor. And if you do believe you have syphilitic alopecia, I’d think hair loss would be the last among your list of concerns, since other symptoms of syphilis would be hard to ignore. Tests are available to diagnose syphilis.
