Hair Loss InformationCyberhair – Synthetic Hair Fibers – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I went to this place to try cyberhair. They tied three artificial hairs to one of my own hairs and did this for a total of 100 hairs. After the procedure, there was pain in the area that they worked. A few hairs came out from the procedure. Is this legitimate?

CyberhairCyberhair was developed by Aderans, a large maker of wigs and owner of hair transplant chains Bosley and Medical Hair Restoration (which has recently merged under the Bosley name). It’s just a type of synthetic hair fiber that is braided to your existing hair, a technique that has been around for many years.

The biggest problem in having artificial hair braided to your own is that in many cases it causes traction alopecia. This results in progressive hair loss from the constant tugging on the original existing hair.

Pea-Sized Bald Spot on Crown with Small Hairs in the Center – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello there doctors

I was having my haircut when my hairdresser pointed out a bald spot just on the left of my crown, there is only one at this time, the size of a pea, its smooth, slightly raised and feels tough. She said it has about 10-15 hairs sprouting through and can see small holes where follicles are. I am 18 with a juvenile hairline and no signs of miniaturisation. 2 years a go my GP said i had a keratin horn near that location but he has since retired, could you shed some light on what the possibilities may be?

Thank you for your time

Pea pod A pea-sized, slightly raised bald spot where 10 to 15 hairs are sprouting? I have no clue what it could be. If your physician has retired, I’d seek out another physician for an exam. Perhaps a dermatologist would be your best bet. Based on your description though, it does not sound like male pattern balding.

Hair Loss from Hormone Replacement Therapy? – Balding Blog

Hello, I have been on male HRT now for about 4 months and have noticed my hair thinning almost from the beginning. I have had great with the therapy and would like to continue. I have had a full head of thick hair all of my life and have no MPB on either side of my family.

If I quit the therapy altogether or have my Dr prescribe me a medication ( Proscar )to block the DHT will my hair grow back to its original form.

Thank You

Everybody is different and will react to the medications differently. I’m obviously not familiar with your medical history, so I can’t comment on whether medication will help. I don’t know anything about your case. I do not even know why you would want to start finasteride in the first place if you do not even know if you have MPB.

I would think the first thing you should do is discuss your hair loss issues with your doctor who is managing you with the HRT.

Hair Loss InformationI Thought DUPA Was Diffuse All Over the Scalp? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

In response to My Hair on Top is Thick, But My Sides Are Thinning Quickly!

You said, “If you are thinning only on the sides, something that I have rarely seen, it’s often associated with diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA).

Doctor….How the heck can he have DUPA if only his sides are thinning and not the top? Makes no sense.

Block Quote

You’re right. In the above referenced post, I was a little quick in my reply. Perhaps what I should’ve said in addition to the above quote is, “There may be additional miniaturization in the front, top, and crown that you’re not noticing, but if the hair is longer it could be more difficult to detect.

Generally if the sides of the head have significant miniaturization, the rest of the hair on the scalp will also show the same. The degree of miniaturization may not be the same in different parts of the scalp, though. As I can’t see the hair loss through text sent in an email, I have to make guesses (educated or otherwise) when trying to answer a question like this. The individual needs to be seen by a doctor to examine their scalp, since who knows what is actually happening with their hair loss.

So just to clarify once more… in the case of someone losing hair on the sides of their head, chances are good that there will be hair loss elsewhere on the scalp. I apologize I wasn’t more clear about that in my earlier reply.

Small Hairs are Now Growing in My Facial Hair Bald Spot! – Balding Blog

So for about 4 months I’ve had to bald spot on lower right cheek. the bald spots were very smooth but now I fill little and blond hairs sprouting up. What caused this? Is it stress or alopecia or cancer? What can I do ?

Doubtful that it is cancer. It could be stress induced or it could be alopecia areata, but it’s impossible to say without an exam. I’d really doubt it is life-threatening or anything to be concerned about in regards to your overall health. See a dermatologist if you’re looking for a more direct reason as to why spots appeared in your beard.

Normal Moustache Hair Loss? – Balding Blog

How many hairs are lost each day from an average moustache? Is moustache hair more or less likely to fall out than hair on the head?

I have been working in the food industry for more than 20 years. Many manufacturers are beginning to require covering moustaches while working with food.

Best regards

The best I can tell you is that the overall moustache hair cycle runs between 2-6 months. The telogen (resting) phase follows the fall out of the moustache hair lasts up to 2 months. All hair is likely to fall out as it cycles.

Could Putting On / Taking Off Hat Over and Over Cause Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello doctor. Thank you so much for taking the time to loo at and answer this question.

I know a question like this has been answered many times before, but I have a slight variation in the question concerning baseball caps and hair loss. My job (part-time) requires me to wear a hat and I have to wear it for about 5-8 hours straight each shift. I keep it a little bit loose so it doesn’t cause a cut off in circulation, but my question is, sometimes I adjust my hat, for example take it off and put it back on or shift it around a little bit.

I’ve read on other sites that putting your hat on/taking it off if you do it often/a few times can cause hairs to pull out/fall out. I do not know if there is any truth to these sources, so I am asking a professional. Is there ANY risk of thinning by wearing a baseball cap for long periods of time 3-4 times a week?

Also, how about hair nets, do they cause any damage/thinning to your hair?

Thank you so much and I hope this question doesn’t cause any irritation as it is a common one.

Block Quote

CapIf the hat is not pulling on your hair, taking it off and putting it on over and over again should not cause any impact. Same goes for hair nets.

Basically, if something is tugging on your hair for extended periods of time, that is when you run the risk of developing traction alopecia, which is commonly seen in women with tight braids.

My Hair on Top is Thick, But My Sides Are Thinning Quickly! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

First of all i would like to take this time to say that this is the most helpful internet site about regarding hairloss.

My question is that i have began receding and thinning badly on the sides of my hair. From the side burn to just above my ear. My hair on top is thick and i am slightly receding at the corners, but at the side of my hair it is getting extremely worse quickly. why is this? what options do i have?

Block Quote

This is a good situation for mapping out your miniaturization. This will put numbers to what you are observing. A good doctor will know how to do this for you.

If you are thinning only on the sides, something that I have rarely seen, it’s often associated with diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA).

Different Genetics for Hairline and Crown Balding? – Balding Blog

Dear Doctor Rassman,

I read a recent post on your blog and it got me thinking.

-Propecia usually does work on the crown.
-Propecia usually doesn’t work on the hairline.
-Propecia blocks DHT.

Is there a posiibility that the genetics of frontal balding and crown balding are different?

-The baldness on the crown is more dependant on adrogens then frontal baldness.
-Maybe crown baldness is more of a result of the androgen receptor mutation then frontal baldness.

It’s just some random thoughts.

Genetics for front balding and crown balding are different, and there is a Norwood classification to describe the differences.

I suspect there are some differences in how the DHT affects the crown versus the front, but I do not think it has anything to do with mutations as you suggest. I think we have not completely solved all the mechanisms of why we bald, and I’m suspicious that much of the different rates of balding has to do with the length of duration of the balding process.

So far only DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is recognized as the hormone that relates to balding, but it does not mean it is the only hormone related to balding. I suspect there are other discoveries to be made.

I’m Seeing Asymmetric Temple Regrowth from Propecia – Balding Blog

Hey Drs at NHI,
I am currently on my sixth month of finasteride and have been applying rogaine for about a month and a half (once a day). I am a Norwood 3 at 18 years old (turning 19 very soon) and cannot tell if the drugs are working. I have however, noticed growth at the temple area of very small hairs (1/4cm – 3/4cmm). It is growing in asymmetrically though, I have more growing in on my right side than my left and I can see an “outline” of where my hair would be if I had a perfect hairline. I just want to know if it is a good sign? It does seem like my hairline is continuing to recede but I am wondering if it will eventually reverse, despite it being a frontal loss.

And just out of curiosity, Dr.Rassman could you tell me more about your son who had success with frontal regrowth? Like what balding pattern he was at and his age when he started using finasteride?

Thank you your blog is very insightful and has helped me in my high school years.

Asymmetrical hair loss is common with genetic balding when it occurs, and reversal of that loss can also be asymmetrical. I’d say any regrowth is a good sign, particularly at the temples.

I believe my son was in his mid-20s at the time he started on finasteride. He was thinning in a Norwood Class 3A pattern and the drug reversed all signs of miniaturization symmetrically.
