DHT and Permanent Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 57 years Old. Over the last 6 years I have had a series of hair graph procedures and have been very pleased. I recently have been working with an anti-aging physician who has me on HGH, DHEA, and injections of low dose of testoterone. although I understand the conversion of T to DHT can cause hair loss. Is the graphed hair succeptible to lost in this situation.

The transplanted hair (as long as it is taken from the right area of the head) resists DHT, which is why we call it permanent hair. If you do not have any genetic balding, then the rest of your hair may also be considered permanent.

Hair Loss InformationMale Losing Pubic Hair – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Sir,
im 26 years old male but have been loosing my pubic hair and my head hair at a very bad rate since i was 16 years old. now at the age of 26 its getting obvious that you can see my scalp and my pubic hair has thinned as well. I had very very thick hair. other parts of my body like my chest hair seem to be dropping, but not as bad. When I shower or just run my hands through the pubic hair it just drops at least more then 10 strands sometimes, and my head hair is the same, dropping all the time. I have taken a blood test and waiting for results, what else should I do, can you please advice thank you. im desperate for help.

Head hair loss has been addressed extensively in this blog, almost every day. With regard to pubic hair and body hair, I would like to know what medications you might be taking. The problem with internet advice is that it is one sided, question to me (alone, often without supporting information) and no real opportunity for me to probe further for info. I often tell medical students that the best doctors can make 90% of the diagnosis without ever laying a hand on a patient — by just taking a good and careful history. My interest in helping people is why I became a doctor. Unfortunately, I won’t able to be much help here without knowing more first. Without two way communication, I can not take a careful history, which is why a visit to a good doctor’s office is what the practice of medicine is all about.

Hair Loss InformationLoss of Neck Hair – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

This man has a not-uncommon finding that shows the difference between scalp hair and neck hair. I always tell my patients that neck hair is not permanent, and even at 30 years old, this person’s neck hair is already disappearing. Too many surgeons use neck hair for a hair transplant with the idea that it is finer hair and makes for a better frontal hairline. But as you can see from the picture below, had neck hair been used for the front of his transplant, it would be falling out already. Even worse, neck incisions tend to produce wide scars. If this patient had recieved a hair transplant using his neck hair, he would have been deformed and would probably regret that he ever had done anything to begin with.

The key to good transplants is that every transplant stands on its own, and that no transplant can be seen as a person ages, loses more hair, or changes his hair style restricting his freedom. Please click the photo below to enlarge.

I Have OCD And Didn’t Wash My Hair For a Long Time – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 20yr old male who didnt consistantly wash my hair from the age of 14-18 because of suffering OCD. Its hard to estimate but its possible I went a month without washing my hair in that 4 yr period. Although I did take a shower everyday and even sometimes twice, so my hair did get wet daily.

I was wondering if its true sebum buildup causes hairloss? IF so is this hairloss permenent or should we assume once the problem is corrected, any loss would grow back.

I also have oily scalp which makes me assume, I might have had sebum buildup.

Is the sebum builup story about causing hairlos true or false?? Please respond as your response will really relieve my worries and anxiety, since I do suffer a few mental problems and have been worrying about this for some time. Also if the sebum buildup applys to my case, would a dermatologist be able detect that by observing my scalp??

Thanks

Sebum buildup does not cause hair loss. What may happen is that if you brush or comb you hair and the hair is stuck to your scalp, you may pull it out. Wash with a good shampoo and use a conditioner as well to prevent pulling the hair out.

I Have Thick Hair, But Not As Thick As 10 Years Ago – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman, I am a 43 year old musician and I am very lucky to have thick shoulder length hair. However, although still thick, it is certainly not as thick as it was 10 years ago, and I am beginning to notice some slight thinning at the crown and although my hairline is still low, some very slight thinning there too. My question is, should I use Rogaine preventatively? Is it better to start Rogaine at the very beginning of what might be a problem? Will I see benefits from Rogaine if my hair is still thick? Or at 43, have I likely escaped a serious hair loss problem and just take some vitamins or something? Thank you so much for your help.

To me, thinning hair either represents a change in hair thickness (possibly aging) — something we see when a baby becomes a young child, and then often when a young man takes the turn into puberty -or localized miniaturization in the areas where you notice the hair being not quite as thick as it previously was. To make that diagnosis, as I have said before, you need to get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and then the microscopic analysis will be clear as to what you are seeing with your eyes. In men, miniaturization is best treated with finasteride (Propecia), not Rogaine (minoxidil) as the drug of first choice. I now have an office in Newport Beach, and since you indicated that you are in Orange County, why not get your hair mapped out and find out that is happening to you?

Taking Avodart and Propecia At the Same Time? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hey Doctor,

Thanks for continuing to answer all my questions. I had a consultation with you about 4-5 months ago.

I have been on Propecia for about 7 years now…and it seems to be less effective than it was before. I am losing more hair, especially within the past 3 or 4 months. I have read your comments on Avodart…and it seems for some people, Avodart is more effective than Propecia, especially when Propecia stops losing its effect.

If I want to try Avodart out for a little while (I know it’s not FDA approved), would you continue taking Propecia at the same time?

Thanks again.

If you take Avodart, there is no point to using Propecia. Be careful about dosing, unless you are under the care of a good doctor.

Thinned Hair From Continued Stress – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have gone through a period of very high stress and very poor nutrition, and my hair has thinned dramatically from the full head of hair I had. I am 58. My Father and Mother both had full, thick hair when they died. Will this come back as long as I have stress in my life, and is there anything I can do to help my body repair. My nutrition has improved. Thanks.

I know nothing about your sex (male or female) or if you’ve had any medical tests that may indicate disease, and on and on. See a good doctor and be sure you are completely healthy first. Then a hair expert will have value for you.

If it was there when you went to sleep and not there in the morning, and there was no hair anywhere in the bed, no hair in your fingernails… hmmm.

Shedding from Highlighting Hair Months Ago – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Black female 36: Hair is thinning from shedding due to highlights put in months ago. What can be done to help this?

Block Quote

Don’t assume that your thinning is from the highlighting. It sounds doubtful. I can not blindly stab at an answer to your questions without access to you, get your correct history, examine you, etc. You should see a dermatologist if the hair does not regrow. Not much I can do online at this point.

Length of Hair and Miniaturization? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello, my question is this. Ive recently been take propecia but ive noticed my scalp gettin really itchy. Is that normal. One more question. If your hair is balding. Dont your hair folicules get smaller every time that they fall out. Because they get smaller they can only go to a certain length, then they just fall out again? Am i right, or would you be able to grow your hair out to a length u wanted without the hair falling out? Id hate to grow my hair and it all fall out.

Block Quote

There is a good point in your questions. When hair shows miniaturization and the hair shafts get thinner, the hair stops growing to its normal length. I suspect that the length it grows to will reflect the amount of miniaturization. The more miniaturization, the less the hair length. Many men with advanced miniaturization of the frontal hairs will notice that the hair does not grow at all. It may stay there for a few years, but eventually the hair that is not growing will fall out. The normal cycling of the hair is what is producing this problem. Hair that is not growing is not cycling into its sleep phase (telogen), and when it does go into a sleep phase, some of it may not grow back. The itchy complaint may be something that has to be evaulated by a doctor who understands skin problems. Too many possibilities to address over the internet.
