Hair Loss InformationDifference Between Hair Loss and Hair Breakage – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

What’s the difference between losing hair and hair breakage? If there is a difference, which are the causes of hair breakage and the possible treatments? Thanks for your time!

Block Quote

DamagedHair breakage means that the the hair shaft has been broken, leaving the hair shorter and at times with split ends. There is no actual loss of the follicle/root. You will have new hair growing out continuously on the part of the hair that is emerging from the scalp. Hair breakages occur when the hair gets too long, too dry, is traumatized by vigorous brushing, or damaged in the management of grooming. Breakage can be also be due to chemical dyes or treatment, excessive blow drying , or the force of pulling the hair shafts apart from any rough handling.

The definition of hair loss means that the root/follicle disappears or become so fine (miniaturized), that it effectively has no bulk associated with it.

Hair Loss in UK – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Everything in the following article is not completely accurate, but worth reading if just to get another cultural variation to discussing hair loss. In reference to comments in this piece about Elton John’s hair transplants, I believe that he does wear a hair system (wig) and did not have a successful outcome for hair transplants as he received them in the early days when the technology was deforming. They call him a toupee wearer, but also say that his transplant was effective. I guess it could be weaved into his hair system to keep it on his head, thereby being effective in that way. Aesthetically though, it can’t be good.

I Lost My Hairline to a Mascara Brush – Balding Blog

i’m a 26 yr. veteran cosmetologist and surprisingly i lost my hairline to a mascara brush trying to cover the gray hairs! i thought i was being gentle by using no hairdyes and no relaxers, but with my luck i guess the curly hairs caught onto the brush wand.i don’t wear weaves, braids or ponytails.never in 43 yrs. have i had a problem with my hair falling out.i’ve been massaging these areas and using nioxin ,i’ts been almost 7 months and no hair in sight.also why is it that i can pluck my chin hairs several times a week and they grow back overnight?what’s the difference in these hair follicles vs.the scalp hairs?i did see a few white bulbs at the end of some of the hairs but didn’t pay it any mind cause the gray was covered! my girlfriend told me that a doc. gave her clobetasol cream to rub on her scalp when her hairline fell out from ponytails and she said it took her months to get to a doc. after the baldness and it grew back.last guestion if you still see a hole where the hair came from and the skin is not fused or scarred shut does that mean it is a possibility that the hair can grow back because it is not nickle smooth?

In answering this, I will first assume that this writer is a man — I apologize in advance if I’m mistaken. It is unusual that one plucking of a hair will result in permanent hair loss. I would certainly wait a year before assuming that the hair loss is permanent and with a pore present, that might suggest that the follicle may yet return. If it does not come back, you might have plucked out part of your juvenile hairline, which in many men is not permanent. Plucking out non-permanent hair like this or hair that is impacted by male genetic hair loss, may not return. For a woman, the juvenile hairline is called a female hairline and is stable for most of a woman’s life, so although I would still wait a year or so, the causes for failure of hair to return are not as well defined here.

With regard to clobetasol, it seems that this is part of the homeopathic drugs that are not well documented in their benefits. Lots of chatter about it on the internet, nothing firm from any credible source.

I have many questions for you: Are you male or female? Are you balding? Is the entire frontal hairline plucked out, if so how far back? I would expect that some of the frontal hairline must still be present. Did you use some harsh dye that could have damaged the hair follicles? The benefit of the FOX/FUE technique is that it cause no noticeable linear scar in the donor area. In term of shock loss, I believe that it is due more to making site at the recipient area than the harvesting area in the back of the head. I have seen diffuse hair loss due to the stress of the surgery. It is hard to predict shock loss, though the pattern has been more common in patients who have an active process of hair loss going on.

I Lose Hair In The Shower, But My Friends Say They Don’t – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr. Rassman,
Im 17 an i have been noticing when i shampoo im losing quite a bit of strands, i know its common to loss up to 100 strands but i ask my friends if they lose any strands of hair in the shower an they all say no. Also none of my family members have ever gone bald, so does this mean that i can or cant go bald?

ShowerYou are correct in that 100 (and even as many as 200) hairs a day and is normal to lose. Hair grows in cycles, so sometimes you may notice more hair loss. If your hair loss is within that range, I wouldn’t be worried. Your hair may be in a cycle where it is in its shedding phase, but when we go into a hair loss cycle associated with genetic hair loss, the loss in the shower may be higher. The best way to judge is to:

  1. compare what you are seeing to what you had been seeing in the past
  2. see a good doctor who will map our your scalp for miniaturization looking for the findings that are always present in genetic hair loss

Hair loss in your genetics can skip generations, so even if you do not see it in your immediate family, it does not necessarily mean that nobody in your family has experienced balding to some degree. And chances are that your friends do lose hair in the shower and it goes down the drain. I couldn’t tell you for sure though — I do not shower with your friends.

Paxil and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Doctor,
I started taking Paxil about 3 months ago and have recently been expieriencing increased hairloss. Prior to taking paxil I hadn’t expierienced hairloss for about a year. Do you think there is a connection between the paxil and the hairloss, and is the hairloss irreversible if it is?

It is not clear if you are male or female, which is important in the way I construct the answer. I will assume that you are a male. If you had hair loss 1 year ago when you were not on Paxil, maybe this a coincidence, maybe not. Hair growth and hair loss both go in cycles, so perhaps you just kicked in the loss cycle.

As I stated in a blog entry from just last week, but it is worth repeating –

I have three important points to make with regards to medications causing hair loss:

  1. Before identifying a drug as a possible cause of hair loss, you should find other medical causes.
  2. People take medications for a health problem. You should not stop taking a medication just because you think it may be causing hair loss. Your health should come before your hair (especially if you are not certain that the medication is causing the hair loss).
  3. Most importantly, you should follow up with your doctor for medication changes and concerns.

Shower’s Water Pressure Causing Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Could water pressure in the shower be causing hair loss? I just moved to a new state about a month ago and the past two weeks I have been noticing hair everywhere. When i wash my hair, it is stringing between my fingers, all over my pillows, i’m having to clean hair out of my brushes constantly. Could it be the water(what’s in the water), shampoo, or conditioner too?

Hair loss is not from shower pressure, and I really doubt it could be the water itself (impact in a month) or in any change in shampoo or conditioner. It would be more likely to ask yourself if you are stressed from the move and living in a new place. Stress can cause hair loss. If it is only going on for a few weeks, calm down and wait it out.

Patchy Hair Loss — Is It Fungus? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have had patchy hair loss for about 9 months or so, I went to a derm, he said it did not appear to be normal male loss, he gave me some shampoo and wanted me to come back in 2 month, I did, he did not see any improvememts, the bald spots still become very red, and burn. I just went to a new derm, he also said the hair loss doesn;t appear to me male pattern, he gave me some foam called olux and said it may be a fungal thing, he said if no new hair growth are seen in the bald patches in 4 week, he wants to do a scalp biopsy, what will this show? I really don’t understand, what things can it biopsy turn up, what conditions could make my hair fall out in patches, also the patches are on the top part of my scalp. thanks you and any info would be helpfull.. thanks again

To answer your question I would be giving you a course in dermatology. To answer your question about the scalp biopsy, I believe he is looking for fungal infections (it would show the actual fungus interacting with the skin), autoimmune diseases (it would show certain primative defensive cells attacking the hair follicles with reactive tissues around it), and the like. It sounds like he knows what he is doing, so stick with him.

Wrinkles, Shock Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Did you say that scalp excercises and massages actually CAUSE wrinkles in your forehead?

Also, Im not sure if you answered my question regarding hair follicles, but if you have a hair transplant and hairs fall out due to shock loss and dont grow back….does that mean that the follicle is actually destroyed or is it still intact, but just not producing hair anymore.

Thanks for your help

Sleeping BeautyMassages do not cause wrinkles in the forehead, nor will exercising the forehead muscles make that happen. You may be thinking about what I said when a person is trying to find out where their hairline was when they were youths. Wrinkling the forehead will produce a line at the top of the forehead muscles (frontalis muscle) and that line marks where a child’s hairline or a woman’s hairline starts.

‘Shock loss’ from a hair transplant may grow back if the hair is permanent hair (most women) or hair that is not at the end of its life cycle (such as an accident with a scalp wound in a non-balding man). When the balding process is at the end of the cycle for those hairs that fall out from shock loss, these hairs may not grow back. Miniaturized hairs which result from genetic balding are ‘weak’ hairs that will not live through a major stressful event.

When it does grow back in balding men, it is because the hairs that were lost are usually not at the end of their natural life cycle. If they grow back, then clearly there is life still left in them. Hair that does not return after shock loss in the male is for all practical purposes hair at the end of its ‘life’. With that said, I do not really believe that the hair is ‘dead’, but rather impacted by whatever the defect that causes male patterned genetic hair loss. Some day, hopefully in my lifetime, a medication will be produced that will take up all of the ’seeds of hair’ that I believe are still in the scalp, closing the defect so that the hair will start to grow… in a way much like the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty, I suppose.

Sometimes ’shock loss’ can be minimized by being on Propecia prior to having the hair transplant. Shock loss does not happen to all patients who undergo hair transplants, just some of them. Most people are quick to forget the robust nature of permanent hair which comes with the hair transplant process. Shock loss should be something that is explained to you before you get hair transplants. It is a part of the informed consent process and you need to know all of the risks involved when you undergo a hair transplant (or any surgical procedure).

Asymmetrical Hairline – Balding Blog

Dear Doc, is it normal to develope a very asymmetric hairline at the age of 18-19 ?
I have the right part of my hairline very regular, but the left side is extremely high… it seems that I losed hair only on the lef temple region. In the other areas of my head I have a full density of hair. Is it a normal thing? Could my stress have caused this recession, or was this something impossibile to avoid anyway?
Thanks for your help Sir

Hair loss from genetic causes, can start on one side and then eventually the other side will catch up. Get a diagnosis by mapping out your scalp for miniaturization to determine if you have genetic hair loss. Then tackle it with a good doctor and the appropriate medications that work really well in young men.

My 3 Year Old Is Losing Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

My little girl is three and her hair is falling out. When it does it looks and feels like a fur ball from a cat. When she was one she had milk indused anemia. She has been on iron drops since. Her iron levels are now normal, but she is still taking iron drops. Can this have any bearing with the hair loss? Could it be too much iron in her body? She was tested for thyroid, diabetes, and other tests that could cause hair loss – all normal. The way the hair started to fall out was on one side only and now has started to fall from the top of her head. One day at her day care, another girl pulled her hair and a clump of it was sent home to me in an envelope. She is very petite for her age. She is a very nervous little girl. I am a single mother, although she sees her father several times a week and he spends time with her on the weekends. Help me with some answers. Hair loss is not an issue in the family. My hair is red and very thick. With this info please help me?

You need to see a pediatric dermatologist, a specialty in itself. I wouldn’t know how to treat hair loss conditions in a 3 year old over the internet. Sorry.
