Hair Loss InformationI Take Excessive Retinoids and Have Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’ve been taking excessive retinoids for quite some time now. I started coincidentally thinning (just a little bit to the point of being 100% unnoticeable) around the end of last summer. I stopped taking the acne medications towards the end of the first semester of college (which was right around October/November). Then I went back on the retinoids in February, but developed a full, thick head of hair. I eventually upped my dosage and went on a more intense medication.

Side note: I also went vegan right before college. Second semester I ended the veganism. I was also taking a medication called doryx, which had reported side effects of hair loss, on and off. My slight hair thinning continued throughout the rest of the semester. I went to a dermatologist who didn’t really look at my hair, but prescribed propecia and rogaine. It completely ruined my hair and made it 70% thinner, more brittle, and with bald spots within 2 months. I took propecia and rogaine together for a total of 29 days.

My hair is still falling out rapidly. I also was taking acne medication throughout that period, but stopped in the middle of my propecia dose. I am no longer a vegan and no longer take retinoids or doryx, but my hair is still falling out severely. My dad started having thin hair in his 40s-same with my grandpa. I am only 19 years old. What exactly is going on?

Block Quote

Oral retinoids have been linked to hair loss if you take excessive doses (source), but there’s really no way for me to pinpoint what the exact cause of your loss is considering the medication you took, the change in diet, and your age. I don’t know your complete family history, and just because your dad lost hair in his 40s, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you would too.

You may have the genes for balding and the diet change or medication caused the loss to begin sooner. Or your genetics alone could be responsible for the hair loss starting at 19. Or you don’t have genetic male pattern balding, but the medication or supplements are causing it.

There’s just too many variables that make it impossible to come to any definitive cause.

Does Fine Hair Recede Faster Than Thicker Textured Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi! I’m just curious to know….
Let’s say that hypothetically, 2 men have the same balding pattern BUT one has fine hair and the other has thicker hair texture. Would they recede at the same rate because of genetics? Or will the fine hair textured man recede faster?

Block Quote

It is not about hair texture. It is about genetic predisposition. Having fine hair would make the balding look worse (because it does not provide coverage as well as thicker textured hair), but the hair character isn’t going to determine the rate of your hair loss.

Hair Loss InformationMy Wife and I Both Started Losing Hair At the Same Time – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Both myself (49) and my wife (47) had very very thick hair. Our parents in the late 70’s still has most of their hair. And no baldness in both of our family. But we noticed in the last year both of our hair is getting very thin and showing sign of pattern balding.

The perplexing question is why is it happening to both of us at the same time?

Block Quote

I am not sure what you meant by pattern balding and the overall information you supplied is scant. To do a proper investigation of the coincidence, would would want to look carefully at what this hair loss pattern is, what are the possible environmental factors involved and give both of you a very thorough hair and scalp examination, as well as take a very careful, detailed medical history.

Hair Loss InformationI’m 16 With Early Hair Loss, I Wash My Hair Twice Daily, and I Train Mixed Martial Arts – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am 16 years old and I think I am starting to show signs of male pattern baldness. I noticed a few weeks ago that the hair on the crown area and top of my head was thinning, but I haven’t noticed any major signs of a receding hairline. I started researching and found that hair loss can be genetic. So I asked my grandfather on my mother’s side when he began to lose hair and he informed me that he started noticing hair loss when he was 18.

Another thing I found while researching was that amount of exercise can be linked to hair loss. Which, if true, can be linked to my hair thinning because I was training in MMA fighting for about two months but recently stopped and suddenly didn’t do any exercise at all. As soon as I stopped training is when I began to notice that my hair was thinning.

Also, I am experiencing slight itching and tingling in the crown area of my head. Another thing is that I do shower and wash my hair, on average, two times a day. I was surprised when I noticed my hair was thinning because I grow hair on almost every other part of my body except for my back. I have already set an appointment with my dermatologist, but it won’t be for another few weeks.

I was wondering in the meantime if it would be a good decision to start using a thickening shampoo and take vitamins. So if there are any suggestions that you can provide I would greatly appreciate it.

Genetic hair loss in men can generally start with the onset of puberty. The hair loss seen after your MMA training could’ve been coincidental, and body hair growth is unrelated to scalp hair loss. I’ve read online chatter that exercise / weight training and hair loss are linked, but I’ve not seen that to be the case.

There is no stopping or reversing a genetic predisposition forever. Hair thickening shampoos and vitamins are not cures, but may make your hair feel thicker. If you are worried about hair loss, you may want an objective examination and diagnosis before starting on an expensive journey of investing in shampoos and supplements. At 16 years old, you should also get a parent involved.

Hair Loss InformationMy Hair Has Become Thin, And I Wonder If It Is From Cigarettes – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

some time ago i’ve noticed my hair becoming thin, i also have a bad habit of smoking cigs which ive been smoking for 2 years. so i figured if i stop smoking my hair might grow back thicker and fuller.well i just recently stopped smoking cigs for about a week.

not enough time has gone by to see if my hair would grow back, but i wanted to see if i could save my hair and whether or not cigs have anything to do with it

Block Quote

I don’t know anything about you other than you’re losing hair and smoked for 2 years. Smoking might contribute indirectly in some way, but I doubt that it is the reason your hair is thinning. In the great majority of cases, it is your genetics that causes hair loss. Of course I recommend that you stop smoking for your overall health, but I wouldn’t expect that quitting smoking would make your hair regrow.

If a Man Gets Castrated While Losing Hair, Does the Loss Just Stop Immediately? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Doctor Rassman and Pak

I have a question about castration. Does castration only stop hairloss if a person were to be castrated before puberty(hence before male pattern baldness starts), or does it also stop hairloss once hairloss has started as well? for example lets say there is a 30 year old with active hairloss, he gets castrated, does the loss stop, or will it still continue regardless of the castration?

Im not thinking about castration lol, just want to know for knowledge purposes

Block Quote

My educated guess is that once the hair loss starts you cannot completely stop the process even with castration for the hair that is scheduled to be lost (i.e. apoptosis). I could be way off base, though. I’m not going to suggest castration to prove it one way or the other.

In the News – Baldness Cure is 2 Years Away? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

They are already talking with pharmaceutical firms about making the product, which would work by stopping the effects of a single guilty enzyme.

US-based dermatologists announced earlier this year that they had found that an enzyme, called prostaglandin D2 (PGD2), instructed follicles to stop producing hair. They identified it by screening 250 genes implicated in hair loss.

George Cotsarelis, head of dermatology at Pennsylvania University, said the one responsible for levels of PGD2 played “the major role”. He said he was now talking with several drugs firms about creating the anti-baldness product.

Read the rest – Baldness cure could be on shelves in two years

Two years seems like a bit of a stretch, considering there is no actual product yet… but the media is easily excited about hair loss “cures” as anyone that has been waiting for new treatments has surely seen. Apparently this new hype is based on a study of 17 people, but I don’t know where this idea came from about a proven safe and effective product being available by 2014. Whether or not PGD2 will be the next great hair loss treatment, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done first.

Just to sum this article up — apparently we went from a small study on PGD2, all the way to the miracle hair loss “cure” being on the shelves in a couple years even though there is no product just yet. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Hair Loss InformationCan It Take 6 Years Before Propecia Side Effects Show Up? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I started using Propecia when I was 27 and I am now 43. I didn’t really notice any side effects until I was 33. I started having erectile difficulties then which are offset by daily Cialis use. The difficulties were loss of erection during sex and reduced ejaculate. Is it possible that it took 6 years for the sexual side effects to kick in from Propecia?

The drug has definitely helped me prevent hair loss and I would like to keep taking it but I have also dealt with some anxiety and depression issues over the last few years.

The basic question is: Can it take that long( 6 years) for side effects to show up?

Block Quote

You need to see a medical doctor and have a physical exam. Many men in their 40s or even 30s have erectile dysfunction (ED) without ever taking Propecia. It’s just that they do not openly talk about it. You might also have undiagnosed medical conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, etc) that can cause ED. Or you can be taking other medications (blood pressure, anti-depressants) or drugs (marijuana, cocaine, etc) that may be causing the ED. Maybe you smoke cigarettes or you drink alcohol. I don’t know enough about you and since you’re not my patient, I’m just taking wild guesses here as to possible causes.

I suppose it is possible that after 6 years in a healthy man with none of the things discussed above, some sexual side effects may develop over time. That being said, it is more likely that if you were going to have side effects from Propecia, they would appear within the first few weeks.

I’ve written about this before here.

I Was Prescribed a Steroid for Facial Scaling and Redness, But Now I’m Losing My Eyebrows – Balding Blog

(Female)
Hi,I was having some redness and scaling over my both eyebrows for about a week. It was very itchy and tingling. I also experienced eyebrow loss, about 1 to 2 each side everyday. I was prescribed with a combination steroid and dakarin cream. My condition improved after 2 days, less itchy but still finding my eyebrows dropping. May I know what should I do?

You should ask your doctor what condition he is treating. Was it for an allergy? A fungus? An infection? As I have not examined you, I can not give you an opinion on your problem.
