My Girlfriend Has an Itching, Burning Scalp That She Picks At – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

please help – my girlfriend is suffering from itching and burning on the top of her head – and she has little red bumps in that area. she picks at them until they peel or flake off – and now she is seeing her hair fall out in little small circles in this location. what can she do and what is causing this??? just some information: she is 50 y.o, in menopuase and has had this condition for about 3 months now. please help.

If she continues to pick, these bald spots may become permanent. The red areas you are looking at may be traumatic in origin from the picking. This is an obsessive condition called trichotillomania. She needs to see a good dermatologist to lock in a differential diagnosis and pick up therapy from the recommendation of the dermatologist. The signs of trichotillomania are very characteristic on an examination of the scalp, so a good doctor will easily identify this as a cause if it is what is happening to her.

Sarcoidosis and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i have sarcoidosis. my hair is starting to fall out. i’m 29 male. please tell me if it will grow back

There is no way for me to know that your hair will grow back. You need a good medical examination and a correct diagnosis. Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease of unknown causes. It affects more women than men. It affects all organ systems including the skin, which may contribute to hair loss. While sarcoidosis may be a factor in your hair loss, you may also have male pattern hair loss. There is no way to tell unless you get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and then follow-up with your doctor for his/her interpretation of that mapping pattern.

Hair Loss InformationArticle – Fighting Insurance Companies to Pay for Wigs – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Insurance companies generally exclude any hair treatment (wigs, transplants, drugs, etc) as a benefit of the insurance plan. For accidents, I have had insurance companies pick up the bills, but that is unusual. Read this interesting article about a woman fighting insurance companies on behalf of those with alopecia…

Hair Loss InformationHypothyroid Condition and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have been told thet i have a hypothyroid condition. I take synthroid. Since I have been on this medication my hair has had severe breakage at the top and middle of my head. I have been using olux foam and selseb shampoo. I still continue to have sore spots in my head and several bumps to come in these spots. I am a 59 year old afro american female. I have also had injections in my head. My hair still does not seem to be starting to grow back. Do you think I am on the right track or should I talk to my doctor about some other type of treatment.

Unfortunately, it is impossible for me to really know what is happening to you just by reading an email. Hypothyroidism can produce hair loss and changes in the character of your hair. Apparently you are under the management of someone who is injecting something into your scalp. I can guess what that is, but rather than do that, I would suggest that you ask the doctor who is treating you the question you asked me. Any good doctor will discuss the treatment plan and his/her expectations with regard to that treatment plan. These bumps you are getting need a professional opinion, not something I can do competently over the internet.

Bald at 3 Years Old – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am most pleased to contact you from Tbilisi, Georgia. I am male, 24 years old.

I would like to tell you about my problem which occurred at the age of 3 when my hair started falling out (circumscribed alopecia) which has resulted in full baldness and continues till today. It should be noted that a genetic factor is absolutely excluded as far as no one in my family have ever had similar pathology. My parents associate this disease with a strong stress and fear. The treatment which I have undergone over many years in my country yielded no result and therefore, I am kindly asking you to assist me.

I learned about your clinic a week ago and I was greatly delighted as after many hopeless years, I am filled with strong hope. Please advise me if you are able to cure me at your clinic and let me know terms and conditions of treatment.

Thanks for attention! It is interesting to me, what result have been received at treatment total alopecia(circumscribed alopecia) in your clinic. Whether in my case probably treatment in your clinic and what result will be received? How many will manage the treatment in your clinic?
Thank’s for your attention

I believe what you are describing is a condition we call alopecia universalis. There is a population of people who have this condition appear at about 3 years old. The hair falls out in clumps and takes less than a year to complete. The end results are bald children and the condition is not curable. Please send me pictures of yourself now and if you have pictures of you at 3 years old, that might be helpful.

No Hair Anywhere on Body – Balding Blog

My brother has lost his entire body hair at the age of 6, due to medication. He had been suffering from typhoid and small pox at the same time then. Since then we had tried lot of medications, both homeopathic and allopathic. He had a patchy growth of hair during these medications at the age of 18+. Right now he is totally bald, no body hairs and no eyelashes and eyebrows. He is of 26 years of age now.
Can you please help me out.

It seems your brother may be suffering from a condition known as alopecia universalis or alopecia totalis. There is really nothing much you can do in terms of regrowing or transplanting hair.

Contact Dermatitis and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Can you please help me? I have a contact dermatitis and have been picking it- is the hair loss permanent or temporary?

Can you also recommend a good dermatolgist and endorcolgist in London? We have bupa but my gp is not good with hair problems.

Thank you . I am very impressed with the time you give others with this awful, life destroying conditon

Contact dermatitis usually is not related to hair loss. However, you seem to describe a condition of compulsive hair-pulling (called trichotillomania) and it may be secondary to your contact dermatitis. Hair loss from pulling is often permanent if it goes on for any length of time. Fortunately if you stop pulling at it, your hair may still grow back. People who pull at their hair often have some obsessive/compulsive elements in their personalities and may require medications to stop the process.

I Think I Have a Diffuse Alopecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman,

I’m a 20 yr old white male and I’ve seen my beautiful dense hair reduce it’s volume to about 40% over a 7 months period. It all started about a month after I relocated to another city. 2 months ago I went to a dermatologist. She gave me this treatment: Hairgrow 2% Minoxidil, Ducray Sabal shampoo and some vitamins. I don’t think it’s working because I’ve analyzed my scalp and I have less hair than 2 months ago. The thing is, I don’t have MPB but rather a diffuse alopecia. I honestly have no idea what the cause is because I have a healthy life style with balanced meals and workout. My father has MPB so in the worse case I should have developed MPB as well.
I would be forever grateful if you could shed some light on my problem. Thanks in advance.

When you describe a diffuse alopecia, I really do not know what you are seeing. When I describe a diffuse alopecia, I expect to see miniaturization of hair throughout the scalp, including the rim of hair around the sides and back (we call this the permanent hair zone). When miniaturization occurs in the permanent zone in a man, this is a very bad omen for long term deteriorating hair loss, something that is not easily managed with drugs and certainly not transplants. Rather than go into the complex area of the real diffuse alopecias, their diagnosis and management, I would suggest that you get your scalp mapped for miniaturization to find out what is really going on. Is this real? Is this a disease that you are manifesting?

Blister-Like Bumps on Scalp After Chemo – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Doctor,
I have had 2 cycles of chemo, Taxol and Carbo. My hair started to thin out and 14 days and due to the massive shedding, I had my kids shave my head. About a week later my head was covered (no room for another)in what looked like chicken pox blisters without the fluid. After a while I figured out that these might be ingrown hairs. Do you have a solution on how to rid these sore and annoying bumps. It seems my hair is still growing a little bit, I bet that will be short lived after round 3! Thanks so much for your help!

Have a good day

Chemotherapy makes you more susceptible to infections. If you shaved or clipped your hair, did you damage your scalp with nicks of bleeding points? I would worry about folliculitis, and would suggest that you get to your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
