Lisinopril, Sular, and Hair Loss in Your Mid-50s – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello

I am a 55 yr old male, and have had gradual hair loss since in college. I have used minoxidil since the early 80’s, and have had hair loss under control pretty well, although it got worse in my mid 40’s.

I begin taking Lisinopril/HCTZ 20-12.5 and Sular ER 30 mg for my creeping high blood pressure about 9 months ago, and my hair on top is looking very thin, and my hairliine is also thinning more than before. Do you think this could be attributed to the meds? If so, do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

Your hair loss may be attributable to the medication. However, medication is usually the LAST in the list of causes for hair loss. You may have a genetic component to hair loss or you may have other medical causes. You need to see a doctor and have your scalp hair mapped for miniaturization before you can hypothesize about your problem.

hi dr. rassman,
im having a procedure done of 2500 grafts and was told that coumadin and digoxin can cause hair loss. im on both medications right now for a-fib but may not be on them permanently. im 38 and in very good health otherwise. could you tell me if this is accurate to your knowledge as a leader in hair transplantation?

Coumadin and digoxin may cause hair loss. You need a good miniaturization study to see the quality of your donor hair and see if the medication has affected your donor hair quality, as you may have a small risk of further hair loss after the hair transplant. You should never discontinue any medication on your own, especially coumadin and digoxin, as prescribed by your doctor. Please express these concerns to your doctor so he/she can better address your concerns.

Hair Loss InformationEsomeprazole, Omeprazole, and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have acidity problem and I’ve taken omeprazole for 2 months then esomeprazole for another 3 months. This results in great loss of hair from my scalp. Now I stopped these drugs and trying with conventional antacids. Should I get back my loosing hair?

There is no way to tell if omeprazole or esomeprazole (Prilosec or Nexium) were responsible for hair loss. There is no way to tell if you hair will grow back. I do not suspect your hair loss was a side effect of these drugs, but if it was, your hair should grow back. You may have a component of male pattern hair loss. You need to be diagnosed by a competent doctor.

Hair Loss InformationSteroids and Propecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman…
Thanks for the input. i have some friends who work-out and take steroids or HGH and they believe if they use Propecia it will offset any negative effects of the HGH or steroids on their hairloss. Your thoughts sir… please respond
thanks

There might be some value to taking Propecia, but it won’t stop the hair loss and probably will see acceleration with the steroids anyway.

Isotretinoin and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I had a bad case of acne earlier due to which i had to resort to Isotretinoin treatment. now wherever i’ve read it says that alopecia is a known complication even after discontinuing isotretinoin therapy and i have been experiencing the same. i have a strong family history of baldness and am experiencing an increasing low hair density with slight temporal baldness for the past 8 months or so. i even had to shift to a new city and have noticed hair fall only after that. see any connection? Also could you advise me a suitable solution to the Isotretinoin complication?

Although hair loss is a documented side effect of isotretinoin, I could not find any study to prove that this is a permanent phenomenon. Having said that, the hair loss due to the side effect of medications could be irreversible if you had a lot of miniaturized hair and were about to lose them anyway. In this case, medication has only acted as an accelerator, not originator of this phenomenon.

Jintropin’s Impact on Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

If I take Jintropin, will it impact my hair loss?

Sylvester StalloneJintropin is manufactured and distributed by GeneScience Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. It is a potent brand of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and will accelerate any hair loss in men who are genetically prone for hair loss. It is worse than steroids for hair loss. There are many dangers in taking HGH, particularly without a doctor supervising the process. This has become a big business for baby boomers who feel extra vigor when they take this medication. Many good, responsible doctors feel that HGH raises the risks of stroke and heart attacks and the aging process may also be accelerated on it, even if the person taking it feels better.

In related HGH news, actor Sylvester Stallone just plead guilty to bringing Jintropin into Australia without a permit. From the Associated Press — “Stallone was accused of bringing banned substances into Australia after a customs search of his luggage during a Feb. 16 visit to Sydney revealed 48 vials of the human growth hormone product, Jintropin.” Ouch.

Hair Loss InformationThinning Hair in 16 Year Old – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

hi. i’m only 16 and for a year my hairs been thinning and scalp showing. i usually grow it out very long then shave it. now its shaved and once in a while theres mini hairs no more than 5 millimeters long here and there. i was also on a lot of steroids like protopic and hydro-cortisone for my eczema.

You steroids could be responsible for thinning. You need to discuss this with your doctor. There’s not much more I can offer without knowing more of your history and examining your scalp.

Hair Loss and Interferon – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have a question with regards to hair loss and interferon. I finished a six month regime of the drug and have noticed that the last few months my hair has been thinning considerably. This concerns me because fifteen years ago i underwent a hair transplant and have been blessed with a full head of hair, but now that it is thinning because of the drug I am worried about whether it will come back or not. Nobody can really give me any insight on this issue and I would appreciate some guidance here. Thanks in advance

Interferon is known to thin hair or cause hair loss, and that would include transplanted hair as well as other hair on the scalp. See http://janis7hepc.com/hair_loss.htm for more.

Nortriptyline, Migraines, and Hair Loss – Balding Blog

(female) I have been taking nortipyline for several yrs (20+), due to migraine headaches. I also had 3 months course of accutane 6 yrs ago. I have noticed for the last 3 yrs a significant hair thinning/ hair loss around my temple, left side greater than on the right. Is possible this is due to accutane from 6 yrs ago side effect or the nortipyline? I have taken extreme measures to care for my hair, weekly shampoos and conditioners. Please help.

If you stopped using Accutane 6 years ago, I highly doubt that it is the cause of your recent hair loss. Furthermore, before you consider your medications (nortriptyline) as the cause of your hair loss, you should explore other medical causes with your primary care doctor. Hair loss in women can be a sign of a medical condition (thyroid disease, anemia, etc…).

PAN Colitis, Prednisone, and Asacal – Balding Blog

Hi. I am a 31 year old female w/PAN Colitis. I was hospitalized in October 2006 due to my condition. Prior to hospitalization I was taking 800 mg. of Asacol 3xs per day.

After hospitalization, I was put on predinsone (varying doses — weened off in March 2006), asacal (1600 Mg 4xs per day — still on) & 6MP (50mg). After I stopped the prednisone, my hair started to shed, excessively. My docter told me to stop 6mp, which I did. Now three weeks later, my hair is still shedding. I know hair loss is a side effect of Asacal, however, is it possible after being on the medication for over a year? Or, does the 6mp take a while to clear the system? Any other thoughts on what it could be?

Both 6MP and steroids can cause hair loss. Chronic illness can also cause hair loss. Until you get on top of your medical problems, you may not get relief from your hair loss.
