Marijuana and Finasteride – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

hello doctor, i was wondering, does marijuana effect the side effects or progress of Propecia at all? that’s it, thank you.

I read so many concerns from people in emails and other various corners of the internet about the negative sexual side-effects of Propecia. Yet you ask about the effects of marijuana, which in itself gives you a low libido and other negative sexual side effects. So if you are a worst case scenario type of person, your chances of a negative sexual side effect most probably more than doubles. We also know that there are reports that marijuana may contribute to hair loss either directly or indirectly.

There is no interaction between marijuana and Propecia.

Using Steroids and Taking Finasteride – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

hi,

i’m a 25 year old male. I’ve noticed quite a volume of hair loss lately. Began using Proscar and Rogaine. I want to do a cycle of steroids. I want to do Deca because it safe on the hair. But i’ve been told using Deca with Proscar as a combination will make might hair loss worse. Can you please clarify and give me a professional answer.

thank-you.

SyringeAnabolic steroids (like Deca-Durabolin) are not something I recommend medically for weight lifting, but I have heard of other doctors who prescribe it for that purpose (see DomesticGear.com – Deca Durabolin). You should definitely be under the care of a qualified medical physician if you are taking anabolic steroids. Aside from the hair loss aspect which can be caused by this medication, you risk liver and other bodily damage. I recall the late NFL football player Lyle Alzado who passed away at only 42 years old from brain cancer, which he believed to be caused by his steroid abuse.

Frankly though, I do not know if using Deca-Durabolin and finasteride together would make hair loss worse. I certainly would not recommend doing the cycle of Deca, that is for sure.

Percocet, Gabapentin, and Female Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I fractured my C4 vertebra 3 months ago and underwent 2 spinal fusion surgeries within one week. Subsequently I was on multiple medications for pain and muscle spasms (percocet, gabapentin). I have weaned myself off the meds; however, in the past week I have noticed significant hair loss. When I brush or even just run my hand through my hair, it’s coming out in small bunches. I have a good diet and am taking a lot of vitamins and flaxseed oil. What do you think is causing the hair loss and what can I do to stop it? I do not take birth control pills, btw. Thank you.

People who have had surgery and stress, can lose their hair. Add to that birth control pills in combination with the surgery, and there are two contributing factors. I would have a complete medical work-up to determine if there are other contributing factors. Female hair loss is often associated with a variety of medical conditions.

Hair Loss from Depo-Provera in Just Weeks! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i have been on the depo shot for only like 5weeks and my hair has already thinned alot. I had thick hair and some of my length is even gone. What is a way to get rid of the effects ? Can i try a cleanser or something because i dnt want to be bald head!!!!

Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate injectable suspension) is a birth control medication used as one injection every 3 months. Interruption of hair growth or hair loss is among its reported side effects. You need to see your doctor to consider stopping this medication and discuss other methods of birth control. If you lost hair only as a result of this medication, you should expect to regrow your lost hair within 6 to 9 months after your last injection of Depo-Provera.

I Have Anxiety About Hair Loss from My Anxiety Medication – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’ve really learned alot about hair loss by viewing your balding blog. I’m not curently experiencing any kind of extreme balding (at least I don’t think) as of yet. But I’ve got a question thats eating away at me after reading about it on your Blog.

Anyway, I’m 29 yrs old & just started taking Xanax again after being off of it for about 5 or 6 yrs. I take it due to an anxiety disorder I suffer from & have had to go back to taking the generic for Xanax (Alprazolam).

The reason I’m contacting you is because you’ve gotten me a bit concerned with a few statements you’ve made about Alprazolam (Xanax) possibly causing hair loss. If I were to take a 1mg tablet two to three times a day, would I be at risk of it causing any type of hair loss? Is there any way you could explain to me how & why the Xanax could possibly cause hair loss?

Thank you so much for your time. If you could fill me in on anything concerning this, I would be extremely grateful.

Block Quote

If you do not have hair loss from this medication, I would not anticipate it. You should be reactive to what is happening, not what might happen. Focusing upon managing your anxiety is far more important, because stress is a significant cause of hair loss.

Depo-Medrol Injections and Hair Loss – Balding Blog

Hi I was trying to find some info on your site regarding Depomedrol injections and hairloss. I am already losing my hair (I take Propecia). Due to the severity of my allergies, I’ve considered the possibilty of a Depomedrol injection. As it is a powerful steriod, I’m worried about drug interaction and as said before accelerated hair loss. A friend of mine receives a Depomedrol – 80 injection once a year during allergy season and he is rapidly losing hair when no other family memebers suffer from hair loss. Could this loss be related to the injection and are ther eany other radical side effects of a yearly Depomedrol-80 injection – liver damage, ect. ?? Thank very much for your time. I anxiously await your reply.

A single dose of Depo-Medrol should have no impact on hair loss. Frequent use of this steroid can contribute to hair loss.

Nitrix from GNC and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr Rassman,

I recently saw a neurologist because of fainting, everything came back good, however she did say (im paraphrasing and ill try to get the technical terms right) that my red blood cells were very mildly high & that this was normally seen with people who live in the mountains not at sea level and that its cause is possibly due to high testosterone levels and then i told her that I am taking creatine and nitrix (both purchased from GNC)and I spoke with a rep from gnc and he said the nitrix could have a link to increasing testosterone levels. my question is can the high testosterone levels possibly cause hair loss?

Thank you

High testosterone levels may very well cause hair loss in those genetically prone to male pattern balding.

Differin and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have been using Differin topical solution on my forehead every night for nearly six years. I have recently noticed that I am losing hair that was transplanted three years prior. I did some research on the web, and there is some mention that other people (although few) seem to have experienced the same. The drug company and the prescribing dermatologist made no mention of hair loss being a potential side effect. In your professional opinion, is it possible that this topical derivative of vitamin A (related to the dreaded hair loss drug accutane) could be causing my transplanted hair to fall out after six years of use? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Differin is a topical medication used for the treatment of acne. Losing hair is not reported as a side effect of this medication, but many of the acne drugs do cause hair loss. See the doctor who prescribed the medications to evaluate your hair loss. Maybe you are losing your native hair. It would be unlikely (but possible) that a medication that you used for six years without any problem is now causing your hair loss.

L-arginine, Pro Solution Pills, and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’ve searched for the answers on your site but haven’t found it yet. From what i can tell Testosterone such as HGH is best avoided as it may accelerate my MPB somewhat. Currently i take L-arginine and was thinking of taking pro solution pills as my libido has dropped and they were recommended to me. Both these products indicate they have ingredients NOT (Dehydroepiandrosterone)in them that promotes the making of testosterone. Will this accelerate MPB at all, I’ve included the sites if you have time. Thousands of people go to the same message board i do (discussing mens health) most of them use the product but nobody has posted a question in relation to MPB and a few of us are interested in the answer.

Thanks for your time

Nobody really knows what these products do and whether they truly work. There may be science behind it and what is claimed may be valid, but the evidence and non-biased scientific research are difficult to find. Moreover, the ingredients and its dosing are not regulated by the FDA, because it is a natural supplement, not a drug. If a product claims it makes more testosterone and you believe that to be true, it will in theory give you more DHT production and more hair loss.

Roaccutane and Female Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi! I’m a 25 yr-old female and have recently seen a dermatologist who told me that my hair loss is most probably due to my taking of Roaccutane (have stopped since about 2 to 3 months ago).. I understand that Roaccutane is a form of vitamin A, so is it okay for me now to consume health supplements that contain vitamin A 5000IU (daily)? Will hair loss be accentuated? thanks for advising!

Roaccutane is an active anti-acne medication containing the active ingredient isotretinoin. One of the side effects of this medication is hair loss. Although hair loss could also be one of the rare side effects of vitamin A, I am not sure they are acting through the same mechanism. In fact, hair loss is mentioned as a rare side effect in many drugs. If you take supplements containing vitamin A and your hair loss gets worse, then it might be an indication to stop the supplement and consult a doctor.
