Hair Loss from Asacol or Prednisone? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m taking prednisone and asacol, my hair is falling out quite a bit and the dr. doesn’t agree that it’s from Asacol. He thinks it may be from the prednisone. Will this subside? I’ve been taking asacol for about 3 months and about a month ago is when my hair started falling out drastically. Its getting very thin, and I’m afraid of going bald and as a female that’s very scary.

Based on the medications you are taking, I assume you have IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). Prednisone is one of the many medications that may cause you to lose hair or have thinning of the hair. It causes many other negative side effects. However, if you need to be on these medications for a medical condition, it is a catch 22 situation. You need to speak to your doctor about your side effects and your concern for hair loss. You should never stop taking any medication on your own without speaking with your doctor.

I Have High Blood Pressure, So What Can I Take to Treat Hair Loss? – Balding Blog

I am a male, age 59. Have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and control it with Diovan and Lasic. My father is near bald.

What if any products, medicines might I take to control the loss and hopefully regrowth of the hair I have lost?

THank you.

If you want a medical treatment for your hair loss, you should start by seeing your doctor and asking about medications such as Propecia or Rogaine. Propecia and Rogaine are the only two medications proven and approved by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss. There are also surgical options such as hair transplantation surgery. For more information you can visit NewHair.com.

If you are asking if there are any blood pressure medications that do not produce hair loss at all, the answer is probably no as a class of drugs, but yes for individual drugs that may have to be tested in you. This is something you need to work out with your doctor. Your blood pressure and heart should be more important than your hair.

Testim Testosterone Gel and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I wrote this to a web site ,, also I spoke with the pharmacist. Looking thru the papers that come with the testim. Trying to I am having something along the lines happening to me. But I am a male, 44yrs old. I started a treatment due to low testosterone( first happened) I started on Sun. It wasn’t until Wed. morning that I noticed a lot of hair in my tub. This is very strange since I have a full head of hair and never see any hair in the tub. Thought nothing of it till Thur at work. I was running my fingers thru my hair. When it seems to rain- startled by what I saw. I pulled a little to see if it was just a fluke. It hasn’t stopped and it’s gotten worse. The pharmacist said it wasn’t related to the Testosterone Gel – Testim. But I only started taking the Gel on that Sunday ,, with hair loose that Tues/Wed? Please let me know if this is truly related or what else could cause this?

There is no doubt that testosterone treatments can be a cause of hair loss. You must be under a doctor’s care, so I would ask your doctor about this side effect and if you should stop the medication. I just had a patient see me yesterday who was taking testosterone and Propecia and the hair loss accelerated shortly after starting the testosterone even though he was on Propecia. Clearly the Propecia did not cancel out the hair impact of testosterone on this patient.

Creatine and Body Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I recently read your entry about monohydrate creatine…I did a little reading & it seems that quite a few doctors think it causes hair loss. I take ce2 ethel ester creatine (28yr old male, caucasian), are you aware if this product can cause body hair loss? or would this most likely be restricted to head hair?
Thank you.

Bodybuilder“A little reading” can be dangerous, because you will always find conflicting facts or opinions.

The good news is that you have a choice! If you believe it causes hair loss, you have a choice not to take it. If you are taking creatine for bodybuilding and you are also worried about hair loss, you have to make the choice.

It is my opinion that creatine does not cause hair loss. It is also my opinion that creatine does not have much effect in bodybuilding. I have personally taken it for a year and I have always found harder workouts made me stonger/bulkier (without creatine).

Yasmin and Female Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I wanted to ask you a question re Yasmin, which I have been taking for almost a year now.

I experienced heavy hair shedding postpartum which could be contributed to the delivery itself and to my then overactive thyroid. My thyroid has been stable and normal during the last 5 months. After stopping for 2 months, I started experiencing heavier hair shedding recently. Since my thyroid is fine, plus no other deficiencies were detected (iron, zinc, B12), could Yasmin be the culprit? Or are other hormonal issues I should be aware of? I didn’t take the first pill of this new cycle and the shedding seemed to slow immediately. Should I consider an alternative contraceptive and will I have regrowth?

Thank you for your time.

We’ve answered a similar question on the contraceptive medication, Yasmin. As we’ve explained before, Yasmin is a combination of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Loss of scalp hair is a reported side effect of this medication. The hair loss from most birth control pills is benign and self limited. Losing hair in this situation is thought to be through inducing hair follicles to go into the telogen phase. You should stop taking Yasmin and speak to your doctor regarding alternative birth control medications or methods.

Hair Loss InformationHair Loss and Blood Pressure Medication – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have been taking LisinoprilHctz10/12.5 and ziac 2,5 together for high blood pressure i recently stopped the ziac and increased the lisinopril to 20/12.5 my hair started coming out ,my question does a beta blocker block dht to some fashion, because from what i have read it should make my hair fall out when taking it not when stopping it.I thought it was my imagination but it has happened 3 times now, or maybe its the shock of getting off the drug,, any ideas!!!

Block Quote

You are on some medications for controlling of your high blood pressure. I am gathering that you have stopped Ziac, one of these medications, a few times and every time experienced hair shedding afterwards. The medication Ziac combines two antihypertensive agents; a synthetic beta1 selective blocking agent (bisoprolol) and a diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide). There is no report of enhanced hair growth with any of these components. Although physical and emotional stress can enhance hair loss, I don’t believe that getting off medication qualifies as one. Think back and see if there was any other factor enhancing your hair loss, besides changing medication.

Hair Loss InformationDutasteride Causing Frontal Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Doctor: Have you heard anything about the use of .5mg of Dutasteride associated with frontal hair loss or thinning? I have been taking .5mg Avodart and 2% Keto shampoo for the past 3 months. I have noticed a cessation of the hair loss on my crown, and a mild thickening, but my widow’s peaks appear to be progressing with a mild diffuse thinning. Any thoughts? Also, I am hearing that topical caffeine is beneficial for hair growth. Any thoughts? Thank you very much!

Dutasteride, as far as I know, has NOT been linked with causing frontal hair loss. Moreover, dutasteride is not FDA approved for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. I do know that there are patients that use it for treating hair loss, but it is a very potent drug and I trust you have had a long discussion of all of dutasteride’s pros and cons with the physician that prescribed it to you.

I’ve written on topical caffeine before…

Putting Birth Control Pills in Shampoo to Thicken Hair?! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Just received this email from a man asking a question I’ve never been asked before….

I was told to get a birth control, grind it and put it in a bottle of shampoo, and it would make my hair thicker. Would that work?

Block Quote

I have a few questions…

  1. Who told you this?
  2. What do you think? Take an educated guess…
  3. How would you (being male) get a hold of birth control pills? You’d need a doctor’s prescription, unless you take the pills from your girlfriend/wife. In that case, instead of hair you would probably end up with a baby.

No — birth control pills used topically will not thicken hair. There may be a misconception that since hair loss is related to the male hormone DHT that a female hormone agent such as birth control pills may work. This is NOT true.

Ritalin and Hair Loss – Balding Blog

I turned 17 about 2 months ago. I’ve been taking ritalin SR for 5-6 months now. I’ve noticed recently that my hair has been receding slowly. Currently it looks like my hair line has gone back about a good 1/2 inch.

If I stop taking this medication will my hair ever grow back?

Ritalin is used to treat ADD — Attention Deficit Disorder. It is commonly used and there are some reports of hair loss associated with this drug, however, at the age of 17, you might be seeing the early maturation of your hairline and you should want to get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to be sure that you do not have genetic balding. As you are in California, come visit me at my Beverly Hills or Newport Beach office to find out and I will map your hair and scalp (no charge for the visit).

DHEA in Multi-Vitamin – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I saw on your site that DHEA can trigger baldness. I did not realize the multi-vitamin I took had it. If I stop taking the vitamin, can I stop the new baldness (if indeed DHEA caused it) or am I doomed forever for those few months I took the vitamin?

Stopping it won’t hurt. I doubt that your short run with DHEA will cause long term effects, but what you lost may not come back.
