Healthy Lifestyle and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello, I am 24 years old, around a year and half ago I noticed a lot more hair coming out when I combed and in the shower drain. Prior to that and pretty much up till now my lifestyle was poor: gained weight, bad diet, no exercise, smoking marijuana, bad sleep… Also I was dealing with depression (and still am in some ways), took Wellbutrin, a common anti-depressant, for a little bit, but stopped when I noticed my hair thinning fearing that it was the cause. Things are better now and I am getting back in shape, gradually and getting my life back together. My hair is nowhere near as thick as it used to be, so my question is: Will living a healthier lifestyle now get my hair to the way it was at all, or are the hair follicles just dead and this is as thick as it will ever be? Thank you very much for your time.

Often, men with genetic hair loss will accelerate it when they live the lifestyle you’ve described above. The drug Wellbutrin does have hair loss as a side effect. Living healthier is clearly better, but if you are undergoing aggressive dieting, it will not help your hair loss as that is another cause of hair loss. Eating a healthy diet and consistency on that diet is the key. Get a good hair doctor and find out if you have genetic hair loss, get a diagnostic mapping of your scalp for miniaturization to confirm if it is actually male patterned balding and then being smarter you can decide what, if anything, you need to do.

Ritalin, Adderall XR, and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have been taking Ritalin since I was in grade school, which I am 24 now. However, four months ago my Doctor switched me to Adderall XR. Could these medications be causing my hair to thin? If I stopped taking them will my hair regrow? What Vitamins as well as foods could I take to supply sufficient nutrients to promote hair growth?

Adderall and Ritalin can produce hair loss. A good diet is important as a general health issue and hair health reflects your overall health. If you have genetic balding, you need to be diagnosed by mapping your scalp for miniaturization. At 24, there are many things you can do, but first you need to get a Master Plan to be able to know what your future options will be.

In your case, if Adderall or Ritalin are the cause of the hair loss, stopping them may help, but with genetic hair loss it is possible that your hair may not regrow. Vitamins and good foods are healthy things to do, but unless you are vitamin deficient or malnourished, these things will probably not reverse any genetic hair loss.

Topamax, Low-Ogestrel, and Female Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have been taking Topamax sprinkle capsules for my migraines for almost a year (onyl 45 mg per day). After the first few months on the drug, I noticed more hair on the floor in my bathroom and that it was falling out when I ran my fingers through it. In November of this year, I switched my birth control pills to Low Ogestrel,a low dosage monophasic pill so as to keep my hormone levels more stable and keep headaches at bay. After doing this, I noticed an increase in my hair loss. Now, in the shower, there is hair everywhere. Hair on my pillow, and hair on my clothes. I’ve noticed that my hair looks thin at my widows peak and on the sides of my head. It’s frightening. I got off the Topamax two weeks ago and the hair loss has continued. I am going off the birth control this month to see if that stops it.

Just wondering if you’ve ever heard of these drugs causing hair loss? Perhaps the combo of the two has wreaked havoc on my body for some reason? My doctors keep saying “It’s possible, but uncommon.” I’ve had all my bloodwork done and every checked out ok.. I just want this to stop. If it is the pills, how long before it will stop?

Thanks for any help!

Hair loss is associated with each and every one of the medications you use. I am sorry to report this to you, but these things have a cost in side effects and finding the balance can be difficult. Some people may be more sensitive than others. It may take months to see any regrowth after stopping or switching the medications. When medications are used in combination, it makes identifying the problem medication(s) more difficult.

Nioxin, Minocycline, and Hair Loss – Balding Blog

I am 17 and noticed that my hairline has started to recede. My hair line has always been some high on my head but now that ive noticed some hair loss it doesnt look very good. I just want to know if something else can cause receding hairlines or is it just MPB. If it is MPB can propecia help me? Im going to see a dermatologist to get a referel for a hair specialist to get a miniaturization done. Also what are your thoughts on nioxin hair products? And last i would like to know if minocycline can cause hair loss?

The rise in your hairline may be the maturing process common in men between 17-29. It rises about 1/2 inch in the front and up to an 1 1/2 inches in the corners and this is not genetic hair loss. Nioxin makes a good set of products that are popular but there is nothing in it that will stop hair loss. Minocycline is an antibiotic which is often used in the treatment of acne. If you are being treated for that, are you taking other medications? Some acne medications cause hair loss. I need a better profile on you, but it sounds like you already have a good doctor so stick with him/her.

Are Antibiotics Causing My Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 16 years old / female and I am having problems with my hair. My hair used to be thick and had volume but now I find my hair falls out easily in the shower and while it is wet, all u have to do is run your fingers through it and hair comes out. My hair is thinning and does not grow as thick. I am on anitbiotics for pneumonia and have been for a year or so now… could that be the reason why? And if not… than what is?

If you have a chronic illness and the antibiotic is for treating it, the illnesses itself could cause hair loss. Any form of medication may have hair loss as a side effect and without knowing what drugs you are taking, I can not tell you its side effect concerning hair loss. Research your antibiotic on Google for potential hair loss side effects.

Hair Loss from Propecia – Balding Blog

Hey. I’m 20 years old and I have also had a further back hairline, but only on the side. it looked fine. A year ago i asked my doctor about it because it was a little thin on the right side and he prescribe propecia. Well i had been taking propecia for about 8 months every other day, when all of the sudden my hair was coming out like 15 hairs at a time. when i ran my fingers through my hair tons came out. I lost about an inch and a half on my hairline in 2 to 3 months. My hairline was fine before but it was just thin on the right side. It crazy its bother me alot. So i quit taking the propecia a little less then a month ago. I mean i cant even grow facial hair. so it feels weird that im losing my hair. PLease help. Could this be temporary?

Dealing with someone like you over the internet is very difficult or almost impossible. As I have said many times on this blog, you first need a working diagnosis. Getting your hair and scalp mapped out of miniaturization should at the least establish a proper diagnosis. Having someone with my experience, for example, is critical in making the judgments you need. Questions that stand out for me include:

  1. Are you going through accelerated hair loss?
  2. Do you have other causes of hair loss?

I would want to go through an extensive history on your overall health and the family tree in terms of balding, hair growth (when and where), etc. Get a good doctor and do not treat yourself. It has been said that “A person who treats himself, has a fool for a doctor”.

Hair Loss from Zoloft, Surmontil, Xanax, or Temesta? – Balding Blog

Dear Dr. Rassman

I am 33 and suffered from depression and anxiety attacks over a period of years and took numerous antidepressants including Zoloft and Surmontil. In addition I took sedatives such as Xanax and Temesta. During that time I did not notice any hairloss, even though I experienced a huge amount of stress. I am on the way to recovery now and stopped taking the antidepressants over 6 months ago and am weaning myself off the Xanax. For the last 6 months I have been experiencing mild hair loss, especially noticeable on the front hairline. Gaps are appearing in the hairline, which was normally full. I wash my hair about 4 times a week and comb my hair when washing it. In total I notice about 20-30 hairs on my hands and comb every time, which I never did before. I have no family history on either side of baldness. I have the following questions:

1) Is it possible that I could be experience temporary hair loss as a result of a history of using antidepressants and huge stress, and am having something of a delayed reaction? If so when can I expect hair to start growing back, if at all?

2) Does hair generally become thinner and recede in any case with age?

3) How can the loss of 50-100 hairs a day be normal? It seems like such a huge amount. Even given that new hairs are growing, that is around 30,000 hairs a year.

Thanks for any advice.

Kind Regards

Stress and antidepressent medications can cause hair loss. In some people, the hair shafts become finer (rather than coarser) and develop less densities of the hairs themselves with age. Most people lose about 100 hairs per day and they grow back about the same number of hairs each day.

Losing Hair from Rogaine – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr. Rassman,
I started using Rogaine almost 2 months ago. My hair was getting very thin and each year I had less hair. Before using Rogaine, I never saw a hair in my shower drain, but somehow I was losing hair. After using Rogaine, my hair loss did not get worse in the first 2-3 weeks, but now, after almost 2 months of using Rogaine, I noticed a lot of hair in my shower drain every day. what shoud I do now? should stop using it? or should continue? I use twice a day, a little more than 1ml of 5% Rogaine.
Thank You

Shedding of hair may occur shortly after starting Rogaine. I would suggest that you ride out this phase considering the short period of time.

Hair Loss InformationXanax and Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 33 year old male and am convinced that I am losing my hair at the front of my head. I have thick hair, but it is certainly thinner, i.e. I seem to have less hairs per square cm. I can also see my scalp at the front, which I could not around 1 year ago. When I comb my hair, or wash it I notice hair in my hands or in the comb. I would say that the number of hairs is around 5 or 6. This is also something pretty new to me. What I would like to know is, am i going bald and how can I determine the rate? Also I take Xanax in small doses and what like to know if this has an effect. Would Rogaine help for frontal hair loss? Finally, how long should I wait before I have a hair transplant. I don’t want to go bald before I do. Thanks.

Block Quote

Xanax can cause hair loss, but I would think that if you are thinner in the frontal area, then you may be having genetic male patterned hair loss. As I have said many times in this blog, a diagnosis includes an examination for miniaturization, which would be evaluated throughout the head to determine what your genetic pattern might be. At 33 years old, your pattern should be evident when your scalp hair is mapped out. I am ingorning your 6 hairs per day loss as that is low and probably a wrong estimate, but the thinning of the hair in the front is more of a concern for me. If you have male pattern balding, the hair in the front will be heavily miniaturized and will show up nicely on magnification imaging. If that is the correct assessment, then Propecia may help slow or stop the hair loss.

Hair Loss Information » Female Hair Loss from Prozac? – Balding Blog

I have been on Prozac 20+ years. Current dosage of 40 mg. per day. I am experiencing hair loss which is increasing. About half the hair on top is gone, there is stubble. Have been to dermatologist who don’t know why.Could Prozac be the reason for the hair loss? I am a caucasian female.

Prozac is known to cause hair loss, although it is rare.

Please read the other posts I’ve made in the Female Hair Loss, and consider having your scalp mapped for miniaturization, so that you have a better understanding of what you are dealing with.
